II DISCOVER THE EUROPEAN UNION The EU at a Glance The European Union (EU) is unlike anything else - it is not a government, an association of states, or an international organisation. It is a unique economic and political partnership between 28 European countries that have pooled part of their sovereignty in EU institutions, with many decisions made at the European level. The EU was created in the aftermath of the Second World War with the aim of ending the frequent and bloody wars between neighbours. The first steps were to foster economic cooperation: The idea was that countries that trade with one another become economically interdependent and also establish good personal contacts so that conflict is more likely to be avoided. From 1950, the European Coal and Steel Community began to unite European countries economically and politically in order to secure lasting peace. The six founding members were Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. The EU has continually expanded since European integration first began and now comprises 28 Member States. Since it was founded, the EU has delivered half a century of peace, stability, and prosperity. This was recognised internationally in 2012, when the EU was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. To continue this success story, the EU is progressively building a single Europe-wide market in which people, goods, services, and capital move among Member States as freely as within one country. As it continues to grow, the EU remains focused on making its governing institutions more transparent and democratic. Human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights: these are the core values that the EU aims to promote both internally and around the world. What began purely as an economic union has evolved into an organisation spanning across almost all policy areas.

The Schengen Area If you want to travel to Europe you might need to apply for a Schengen Visa. But what is the Schengen Area? And what makes the Schengen Visa so special? WHAT IS THE SCHENGEN AREA? The Schengen Area is one of the greatest achievements of the EU. It is an area without internal borders, an area within which citizens, many non-eu nationals, business people and tourists can freely circulate without being subjected to border checks. The area is comprised of 26 countries that have agreed to allow free movement of their citizens within this area just as in a single country. 22 Schengen countries are part of the EU, all except for the United Kingdom, Romania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Ireland. 4 Schengen countries are not part of the EU. Namely Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. WHAT IS THE SCHENGEN VISA? The border-free Schengen Area cannot function efficiently without a common visa policy which facilitates the entry of legal visitors into the EU, while strengthening internal security. The EU has set up a common visa policy for short stays, i.e. stays up to three months, which is applied through the delivery of so-called Schengen visas. The Schengen visa is the document issued by the appropriate authorities to the interested party for visiting/travelling in and within the Schengen Area. Visit the EU Booth or the Booth of any Schengen Member State on the Fair to find out more about getting a Schengen Visa. Additional Information can also be found on the pages of the European Commission: http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/home-affairs/what-we-do/policies/borders-and-visas/index_en.htm 6 7

The Euro The euro is the single currency shared by (currently) 18 of the European Union s Member States, which together make up the euro area. The introduction of the euro in 1999 was a major step in European integration. It has also been one of its major successes: more than 333 million EU citizens now use it as their currency and enjoy its benefits, which will spread even more 8widely as other EU countries adopt the euro. 9
