OPUNOHU BAY The bay of Opunohu (or of Papetoai) is one of the most beautiful sites of Moorea, offering a sight on the peaks of the Mou aroa, overhanging waters in the mesmerizing reflections. It forms the vastest stretch of water of Moorea. The peak of the island, the mount Tohiea, rises as height as 1 207 meters. From here, the view on translucent waters of the Polynesia is simply magnificent. This scenery was of use as places of shootings to numerous movies, among which "The Bounty" in 1983, with Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins, " A love affair " in 1993 with Warren Beatty, and " The counterfeiters " in 1994, with Gérard Jugnot and Jean-Marc Barr. Opunohu wants to say "Stomach of the fish stone". The pass is called «Tareu», what means "Sheltered", because this natural harbour is a deep and safe place to anchor a boat... even better, so that whales come to put low and to play with their "youngs" between July and October The small beaches are sometimes used by the fishermen of «ature», seasonal catch with big nets and by means of outriggers. 3
SWIM (1 500 m) Having prepared their bikes and clothes of race on the park of transition (see CRIOBE page 9), after the briefing in the amphitheater, the triathletes will go at the bottom of the bay and will board outriggers. The departure will be given right in the middle of this wild and majestic bay. In front of swimmers, the mounts which bounds the old volcano, this caldera which we can contemplate since the Belvedere. During the swim, outriggers and paddles will accompany the triathletes. 4

At the heart of Moorea volcano MOUTAIN BIKE ROUTE MB Route This mountain bike course starts at the level of the sea (altitude 0) and will traverse the vast majority of the tracks of the caldera, in the heart of the volcano of Moorea. Superb course that will take the tracks of the fields of citrus and pineapple, undergrowth, forests of mape, fords, an accro-branch... for a loop of 19 kms. The triathletes will have to pass by the arrival before leaving for a second loop slightly different (no second passage by the single track). In case of heavy precipitation, a plane B is possible (shortening of the first loop). 7

VALLEY OF PAPENOO The collapse of the crater of the volcano Tahiti Nui shaped the caldera, the high valley of Papenoo. With its 91 km² of surface, the pond overturning of the valley represents 10 % of the total surface of the island of Tahiti. A unique site, which presents exceptional landscapes with deep valleys and high waterfalls and which shelters numerous archaeological structures, old sites of house, agricultural terraces and mines of basalt. Real meat safe, banks up to the summit of mountains spreads out a luxuriant vegetation, forest of bamboo and guavas, mangoes and other banana trees. Streams and exuberant flora are the mark of a fauna quite so rich. Forests shelter pigs and wild goats, dozens of varieties of birds ; rivers abound in freshwater shrimp and eels The valley also bore the name of «Te Mano Rahi» («10 000 warriors"), because during several centuries, the valley was a permanent living space of big Tahitian chieftainships. Thanks to its isolation at the heart of the island of Tahiti, the valley was able to keep numerous natural spaces, little modified by the man, as well as its invaluable cultural heritage. For 10 years, it is the ideal "playground" of our Transtahitienne. 21
MATAIEA & PAPEARI Historic cradle of the powerful dynasty of Teva, municipality groups the old districts of Mataiea and Papeari. Its main advantages are the botanical garden Harrison Smith, the Paul Gauguin museum or still the gardens of Vaipahi. The nature is a queen to Teva I Uta. Just like a double ourtrigger, Teva I Uta draws its strength from the union of its two associated municipalities: Mataiea and Papeari. Extending over a 120 km² surface, the municipality is lined by the domain of Atimaono to Mataiea and the bay of Teonetea to Papeari. It account two symbolic valleys: Vaihiria and Titaaviri. Endowed with a real cultural and environmental wealth, Teva I Uta, "Earth of Sources", matters on its ground and maritime potential to develop the natural tourism, bound for visitors in search of authenticity. On the municipality of Mataiea, the lake of Vaihiria is the biggest lake of Tahiti. He formed following the collapse of an important mass of ground resulting from sides of the valley and particularly from the side is whose rocky and vertical sides were laid bare. Anecdotally, we tell that in the 1850s, the queen and king Pomare had stayed on Mataiea where a house had been built to them, on the ground Tairitepeuru. Ma ihi was their neighbor, he had a girl called Vaea. When king Pomare was perceived this girl, he ordered to his soldiers to pick her up to make one of his mistresses. But they did not cross the door, because Ma ihi intervened and scared off the soldiers. Ma ihi tells them : " Haere,, a mata noa i te e a, eaha e fariuriu" : " look at the way and do not return any more ". Mataiea is considered as its prosperity, the royal eel of the lake Vaihiria being, according to the old narratives, the key of this wealth! 22
