MSF PAEDIATRIC DAYS - DAKAR 2017 GENERAL INFORMATION
PRIOR TO YOUR ARRIVAL VISA PROCEDURES Before travelling to Dakar, Senegal; please verify that the visa requirements specific to your nationality are all in order. It is your responsibility to ensure that your nationality is not included in the list of countries requiring an entry visa to Senegal. For more detailed information, click here. HEALTH CARE PLAN Make sure that you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before your trip. The yellow fever vaccination is strongly recommended and mandatory for travelers coming from affected countries. Malaria is a serious concern throughout Senegal, nevertheless the endemic risk assessment made by the medical referee for the month of December is particularly low. Dakar, being located in the northern part of Senegal, the malaria transmission rate remains relatively low and lasts less than four months, with December being out of season. Nevertheless, we recommend everyone to take precautions. For more information, click here. If you are under medical treatment, be sure to bring the medicines that you will be needing during your stay, as well as a copy of your medical prescription. We strongly recommend that you do not drink tap water in Senegal. In case of medical emergency, please contact SOS Médecins on (+221) 33 889 15 15, available 24h / 24h. The cost of a hotel visit is 25000 FCFA during the day, with an additional fee in case of night visit. WEATHER The month of December is one of the cooler months of the year, with an average temperature between 22 and 30 C. Therefore, it is highly recommended to protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat, glasses as well as sunscreen.

Do not carry large amount of cash and please note that the insurance of MSF and the hotels does not cover the loss of any personal items through for example robbery. AT YOUR ARRIVAL IN DAKAR AT THE AIRPORT When going through customs, you will be asked some questions regarding for example the address of your accommodation, the length your stay and the reason for your trip. Concerning your accommodation, please provide the address of your hotel. A letter of invitation, which you can present to the authorities when you arrive in order to justify your visit, will be sent out by the organizers. Following custom control, you will be able to pick up your luggage. Please note that you might get approach by persons offering to carry your luggage, in exchange for a tip. If you wish to do it yourself, politely but firmly decline the offer. Always keep an eye on your belongings. TRANSFERT AIRPORT-HOTEL A new airport will be inaugurated on December 7 th (located approximately 60 km from the city center). You will, therefore receive in the instructions regarding the transfer between the airport and your hotel, in the first month of December. ***
SAFETY AND SECURITY INFORMATION SECURITY The risk of terrorist attacks ares a reality in Senegal. Potential targets include shopping centers and tourist beaches. Avoid visiting larger hotels such as the Radisson or the King Fahd, on weekends. Attention: - Avoid visible signs of wealth and a dress code not appropriate to the habits of the country. - As in any large metropolis pay attention to your personal belongings at all time. - At night, it is recommended to move by car, preferably by taxi (Always negotiate the price before entering the taxi, for more information read the section «During your stay in Dakar»). The number of scams and assaults have increased in recent years. Whether you are alone or with a group, at day or night time, regardless of neighborhood, you will never be completely safe from potential malicious people, particularly in marketplaces. You might also be approached on the street by people trying to sell you small items or ask you for money. - Be careful and attentive; do not accept any invitation from people in the street. - Always have a piece of identification with you, even if it s a photocopy. In order to secure the discounted rate, please book by December 1st 2017. TRANSPORT It is highly recommended to travel by taxi in the city, as it is the fastest and of the safer way to move around. Taxi service is available during day and night. Be sure to always negotiate the
price prior to entering a taxi. At rush hour, at night and on weekends, the prices are higher (count 500 FCFA more). Be aware and avoid taxis in poor condition. If you enter a taxi and you notice that it is in bad shape, dirty or that the driver is being inattentive, do not hesitate to ask, in a friendly manner, to stop the car so you can get off the taxi. In this case, you should still pay the price for the drive.
