Dubai & Arabian Gulf Toolkit 11 Destinations On the following pages you ll find some customer-facing descriptions of the amazing destinations that lie in store.

Dubai & Arabian Gulf Toolkit 12 Dubai Known as the Pearl of the Arabian Gulf, Dubai is one of the seven emirates that comprises the United Arab Emirates. With a mix of traditional architecture and glittering modern buildings, Dubai is a place of fascinating contrasts that can best be described as the Middle East meets Hong Kong with a little Las Vegas thrown in for style! Abu Dhabi Abu Dhabi is the second largest city of the United Arab Emirates and on first glance appears to be a striking modern wonder. However, look past the skyscrapers, luxurious hotels and endless shopping malls and you ll see signs of an older culture, including traditional dhows used for pearl diving and fishing and the Heritage Village. Muscat The Sultanate of Oman s capital, Muscat, has a magical feel. It is a combination of stunning deserts, mountains and beaches with all the comforts of a bustling, modern metropolis. It s also the meeting point of Asian, African and Arabic civilisations and this unique blend of cultures makes it a special place to visit and explore. Khor al Fakkan Khor al Fakkan is surrounded by the Hajar Mountains and flanked by pristine white-sand beaches. Shark Island lying just offshore has several well-known dive sites such as Shark Drift, Coral Gardens and Anemone Gardens. Don t be alarmed though sharq is simply Arabic for east. Having said that, snorkel amongst the multi-coloured coral and you may indeed be lucky enough to spot a black tip reef shark, among a rich array of other reef life, including rays, turtles, puffers and batfish.

Dubai & Arabian Gulf Toolkit 13 Three maiden calls for P&O Cruises Sir Bani Yas, UAE This island oasis was formed from the crest of a salt dome created millions of years ago. Half of its 34 square-mile surface area is now covered by the Arabian Wildlife Park, a nature reserve that s home to lush vegetation and 13,000 indigenous animals making it an exciting place to head out on safari. Manama, Bahrain Bijoux Bahrain is packed with things to do! If you re intrigued by the past, a visit to the Bahrain National Museum located in a fascinating postmodern building is a must it seems to float on the water which surrounds it. Add the region s mosques, historical forts, souks, pristine malls and local delicacies and you ve something for everyone. Khasab, Oman Sometimes referred to as the Norway of Arabia, the scenic Musandam peninsula brings you the chance to immerse yourself in mountain scenery with far more promising weather. Popular activities include kayaking or a dhow cruise. In the city itself, the preserved 17th century Khasab Fort offers a fascinating glimpse into Bedouin culture.

Dubai & Arabian Gulf Toolkit 14 See more with a City Stay in Dubai Adding an optional City Stay to your holiday before or after your cruise is an ideal way to explore more of Dubai s attractions and we ve just the place! Anantara The Palm Resort Bed and breakfast basis Perched on the eastern crescent of the iconic Palm Jumeirah, Anantara The Palm Resort offers an idyllic beachside location just 45 minutes from the airport and port. Inspired by Thai influences, this five star resort features four restaurants and three inviting lagoon-style pools. Why not try out the seductive spa located on an island in the middle of one of them? There s also access to the fitness centre and the private beach. Each room offers a sea/resort view with balcony, flat screen TV, tea and coffee making facilities, in-room safe, walk-in shower room and complimentary Wi-Fi. What s included in your City Stay? Accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis Transfers between the hotel and your ship and airport, including baggage handling A P&O Cruises representative on call 24 hours a day Local taxes and fees First night from 200* per person - great value for Dubai Additional nights from 150* per person

Dubai & Arabian Gulf Toolkit 15 Amwaj Rotana Jumeirah Beach Hotel Bed and breakfast basis Ideally located along Dubai s leisure and retail strip The Walk, the Amwaj Rotana Jumeriah Beach Hotel offers an excellent base to explore Dubai. The beach, shops and restaurants are on your doorstep. And if you do head to the beach, the hotel will even provide you with a beach kit containing an umbrella, mat, towel and drinking water. Within the hotel, dip into one of the two pools, take your pick of the four restaurants, work out in the fully equipped gym or take some time out in the sauna or spa. Each room offers a balcony, bathtub with overhead shower, safe, mini-bar, tea and coffee making facilities, satellite television and complimentary Wi-Fi. What s included in your City Stay? Accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis Transfers between the hotel and your ship and airport, including baggage handling A P&O Cruises representative on call 24 hours a day Local taxes and fees First night from 170* per person - great value for Dubai Additional nights from 130* per person

Dubai & Arabian Gulf Toolkit 16 Shore excursions Our destination experts only ever recommend experiences they ve researched right down to the tiniest detail. Here s just a taster of the excursions on offer.

Dubai & Arabian Gulf Toolkit 17 Dubai The Golden City While Dubai is famed for its modern wonders, it s a city in which the past and future meet. Discover more about its past and traditions through the Jumeirah Mosque, Dubai Museum (housed in 18th century Al Fahidi Fort) and its Bastakiya quarter before boarding a water taxi to visit two local souks selling spices and gold. Abu Dhabi Desert Safari Heading into the desert, you ll see ochre waves of sand stretching in every direction before the fun really starts. It s time to hold on to your hat as your skilled driver takes you on an exhilarating (and bumpy) ride over the dunes. Sir Bani Yas Game Drive Recently awarded the World s Leading Sustainable Tourism Destination, more than half of Sir Bani Yas is devoted to its Arabian Wildlife Park, one of the region s largest wildlife reserves. This is your chance to spot some of its free-roaming residents which include gazelles, giraffes, hyenas, cheetahs and the endangered Arabian Oryx. Khasab Traditional Dhow Cruise Get acquainted with one of the region s traditional sailing vessels a lateen rigged boat. Serenely sailing along Musandam s longest fjord, you ll be introduced to the area referred to as Norway of Arabia, sailing past tiny secluded villages set into the surrounding cliffs.

Dubai & Arabian Gulf Toolkit 18 Muscat Afternoon Tea at Al Bustan Palace Situated on a private beach with acres of lush gardens, the luxurious 5 Star Al Bustan Palace Hotel is the perfect setting for afternoon tea. Furnishings in the hotel artistically combine local traditions and Art Deco, creating a unique blend of Arab culture and art. Your afternoon tea will be served in the beautiful lobby which features a 3 metre high dome. Salalah Job s Tomb and Sights Visit Job s Tomb where legend has it that the remains of the Moslem and Old Testament prophet, Job, were found. This is a sacred place of pilgrimage for Muslims, Christians and Jews. You ll be able to take photos and admire panoramic views of the striking mountains and the Salalah Plains before visiting Al Balid Museum and Manreef Caves, a striking cave face overlooking the sea, where, tide dependent, you may be lucky enough to see the spectacular blowholes, for which the beach is well known. Khor al Fakkan Musandam Mountain Adventure Hop aboard your 4x4 on an exciting off-road adventure. Heading north along the coastal road you ll pass several fishing villages before reaching Dibba, at the base of the rugged Hajar Mountains. Then it s time to hold tight as your 4x4 criss-crosses the Musandam Peninsula, through winding gorges, climbing to an elevation of nearly 4000 feet to enjoy breathtaking views.

Dubai & Arabian Gulf Toolkit 19 Top tips for the traveller Using the knowledge of local experts and drawing on our own experiences gained through our world cruises, we ve come up with some helpful pointers for first-time visitors to the Dubai & Arabian Gulf. All very useful for you to know, so you can be the font of all knowledge: Customer-facing copy: Top tips for the traveller Of course, visiting by ship is the perfect way to explore new parts of the globe, as you have the best of both worlds exciting new places and a little familiarity when you need it. We like to think we re experts at making far away destinations accessible, so here are a few top tips that might be useful if you are a first-time visitor to this exciting and atmospheric region. The local culture The culture-rich lands of the Dubai & Arabian Gulf bring you endless opportunities to explore different landscapes, learn more about Bedouin culture, sample fragrant foods and soak up the sun on beautiful beaches. If you re not familiar with this part of the world, here are a few things to bear in mind when packing and planning for your holiday: Beach wear is best kept to the beaches A modest culture means showing too much skin is a big no-no in these parts. In some of the most conservative areas (eg: Khor al Fakkan on the UAE s east coast), western style bathing suits are not allowed even on the beaches. When out and about, you should keep your knees and shoulders under wraps whether you re male or female, and females must cover their heads in mosques. Carrying a headscarf in your handbag when you re ashore is a really good idea. Haggling is expected (in the souks at least) Done in a friendly and respectful way you can get a good deal on souvenirs, jewellery and spices in the local markets though it s definitely not advisable in the designer stores and boutiques. Just remember, a bit of local language is sure to grease the wheels...and that whatever you buy will need to fly home with you at the end of your holiday! Don t overdo it Drinking in public is against the law due to the rules of Islam (which strictly forbids it). There s a healthy attitude to moderation when it comes to alcohol though it s not off the menu for visitors by any means. Most hotels have licensed restaurants and pubs if you d like to enjoy a quiet drink whilst ashore and in the evening (if you re enjoying a City Stay) there are some very stylish bars and clubs. The local language While everyone speaks English, talking a little of the language is very much appreciated and will go a long way with the locals. Here are a few key phrases to keep up your sleeve (or handy on your mobile phone): Shukran (Thank you) Sabah al-khair (Good morning) Massah al-khair (Good evening) Kay falak? (How are you?) Asalam Alaykum (Peace be upon you) Another important word to know and that you will hear a lot is Mashallah (Allah has willed it). This is commonly used when expressing delight or complimenting someone. The local customs You re sure to delve deeper into the culture and customs as you explore, but here are a few helpful pointers to remember when you first venture ashore. Introductions when introduced to the locals, it is customary for men to shake hands with each other. A simple Asalam alaykum will suffice if you re a male greeting a female, unless she holds out her hand. If you are meeting a group, it is polite to greet the eldest member first. Luckily, they usually make themselves known by initiating the greeting. Expect a warm welcome wherever you go, you ll find the locals like to show their hospitality by offering you coffee and dates. Bear in mind that refusing could cause offence so always offer a polite explanation if you don t wish to have any. Indulging a little too much on your cruise perhaps!
