Audrey Doan (left) hosted a potluck meal at her home and Gayle Anderson (right) served as our guide on the museum tours. The mission of Sons of Norway is to promote and to preserve the heritage and culture of Norway, to celebrate our relationship with other Nordic countries, and provide quality insurance and financial products to our members.

ORD FRA PRESIDENTEN: July will be an exciting month for Vennelag members. Numerous things are in the planning stages. First, on Wednesday evening, July 2nd, all members of Vennelag are invited to join Andrew Sewell and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra for the annual patriotic concert on the Capitol Square in downtown Madison. Available members will stake out a place for our listening enjoyment in the afternoon. Bring a chair that is comfy for you. Consider packing your own dinner or you can purchase a meal from one of the food vendors that will be in the area. Wine is an acceptable beverage. Secondly, we are gearing up for our annual Kaffe Stue or coffee room. Many people have already signed-up to bring foods, help make sandwiches, or cut up fruit; others will be present to assist with set-up or take-down. No matter how small your part, know that your contribution is genuinely valued and appreciated. It is through efforts such as this that we are able to generate funds. We are a contributing member of the Village of Mt. Horeb and our work enables us to assist others from a distance. This year we have used some of our funding to purchase new shields for the Vennelag float, have funded scholarships for both a high school student, and additionally a college-level student who is working on his doctorate degree in Scandinavian Studies. We have also contributed to the Sons of Norway Foundation, which assists members in times of natural disasters. Lastly, our members will have the opportunity to spend an afternoon at Thunder Valley Inn and Farm near Wisconsin Dells on July 27th. We will be enjoying a delicious Scandinavian smorgasbord and will sit back to enjoy some musical entertainment. There is a farmer's market that day and fresh produce will be available for purchase. If you will have little ones with you, they can visit the farm's animals. For the shoppers in the family, a gift shop will welcome you with open doors! Please send your check in the amount of $23.00 made payable to Vennelag 5-513 to me at: 200 Beth Circle, Mt. Horeb, WI 53572. Thank you! Your membership in Sons of Norway will mean more to you, as you solidify new friendships and take part in our activities. Others may enjoy what we do, too; bring them along with you! If you are considering going on the Door Co. trip, please send in your deposit of $100.00 soon. If we cannot fill the bus, it will be necessary for us to increase the bus charge. All of the venues are willing to work with us and will accommodate the group no matter how many participants there might be. I look forward to seeing you at these summer offerings in the near future. Fraternally, Cheryl Page 2

There will be a lefse making party at the Kittleson residence, 7447 Rolling Meadows Rd., rural Verona on Saturday, July 5th. We will meet at 9 AM and conclude by 3:30 PM. Lunch will be served. Duane promises Aquavit at the end of the session! If you want to bring your own liquid refreshment, feel free to do so! If you can help that day, please give the Kittlesons a call at 845-9423; 8 to 10 members are requested. Please note the October lodge meeting has been moved to Thursday, October 23, 2014 to accommodate the Village use of the Senior Center for election training on our normal October 30, 2014 meeting date. The program for that evening is wood carver Rebecca Hanna from Decorah. Thursday, November 20, 2014 our speaker is Glenn Borreson from Holman who will share his program on the Coffin Ships immigration and peril at sea. Brian Bigler at the Mt. Horeb Historical Society called to ask for assistance. The Society is interested in speaking with benefactors who could help the Society acquire items from the Little Norway collections. You may contact Brian at his office: 608-437-6486 or at home 608-437-7776. Welcome New Member Tammy Hermanson 1818 Dondee Rd Madison, WI 53716-1816 God Frihetsdagen Page 3
