M A R I S A D E C A S T R O The New Acropolis Museum Activity booklet Are you ready to explore the New Acropolis Museum?

Wow! The Triple-bodied Monster is a very strange creature! Can you think of another name for him? Look at the inscription on the base of the Calf-bearer written in ancient Greek script. Can you write your name using the ancient alphabet? A B G D E TH π L ª X P R S Δ U PH CH PS O 2 A C T I V I T Y B O O K L E T www.metaixmio.gr

Come with me and let your imagination run wild! If he had also written a letter to Athena, what do you think it would have said? «T H E N E W A C R O P O L I S M U S E U M» 3

Imagine that you are an archeologist. Whilst digging at an excavation site, you find these very important artifacts. Can you match each piece to the correct statue? There are so many games we can play in the museum! the Calf-bearer Karyatid Armed Runner Kore Athena Oarsmen on Trireme 4 A C T I V I T Y B O O K L E T www.metaixmio.gr

Can you design a new dress for the Kore? «T H E N E W A C R O P O L I S M U S E U M» 5

The young rider has lost his horse. Can you help him? Draw the statue as you imagine it looked when it was new. 6 A C T I V I T Y B O O K L E T www.metaixmio.gr

Look closely at the expression on the face of silent Athena. What might she be thinking about? Listen! I think the statues are trying to tell you the secrets and stories of the past. «T H E N E W A C R O P O L I S M U S E U M» 7

The Olympian gods and goddesses are watching Athena emerging from Zeus head. Can you work out who is who? The deadly eyes of Medusa no longer have the power to turn you into stone. Go closer and investigate if you dare! Which of these heads matches the marble head of Medusa displayed in the museum? 8 A C T I V I T Y B O O K L E T www.metaixmio.gr

Athena and Poseidon are arguing about who will give his name to the city. What do you think they are actually saying? Feel the statues with your heart... not your hands... «T H E N E W A C R O P O L I S M U S E U M» 9

Can you count? The Parthenon columns are 10.43 m high. How tall are you? If you and your friends stood one on top of each other, how many of you would it take to reach the capital? The quarry of Mount Penteli is 18 km from the Acropolis. In ancient times, Athenians measured distances in stadia. If one stadium equals 185m, can you work out how many stadia it is from the quarry to the Acropolis? The mule-drawn wagons transporting the marble traveled at 2.5 km per hour. How many stadia did they travel in one hour? [Use the previous result.] How many hours did it take to travel from the quarry to the worksite? 10 A C T I V I T Y B O O K L E T www.metaixmio.gr

Quick quiz! How much do you think it would cost to buy a Karyatid today? 1,000 Euros 10,000 Euros 100,000 Euros They are priceless; such ancient statues cannot be bought. Whilst digging at an excavation site, archaeologists find the pieces of some interesting ancient artifacts. What do you think they do with them? Keep them in a storage room and forget about them. Study them closely in order to understand what they are and what they can tell us. Throw them out with the garbage. Look closely at the Korai. Can you see the holes in the marble? Why do you think they are there? What might be missing from them? Each figure of the Triple-bodied Monster represents an element of nature. Can you guess which element is symbolised by the bird? From where did Aegeus jump to his death after seeing the black sails on Theseus ship as it sailed back from Crete? The Temple of Athena Nike - from where he could see the sea. The cliff at Sounion - from where, it is said, he jumped into the sea. We don t know for sure because the story is based on ancient myth. If Aegeus did jump from the Acropolis and not into the sea, as Pausanias the travel-writer claimed, why was the Aegean Sea named after him? «T H E N E W A C R O P O L I S M U S E U M» 11

Will you come back to the museum? There is much more for you to explore! Translation: Daphne Bonanos The activity booklet is distributed FREE of charge with The New Acropolis Museum book.
