Wednesday, December 26 TBD Afternoon Arrival to Havana. (pending flight information) Check-in at hotel. 6:30 pm Orientation talk with your local guide: overview of the agenda, discussion about local transportation, nearby markets, internet access and other logistics, safety, cultural norms and current events in Cuba. At the hotel. 7:30 pm Welcome dinner at Paladar San Cristobal. Located in the heart of Central Havana, this paladar has a reputation of excellence in both atmosphere and local cuisine. Enjoy great food while the local takes you back to the 1940s and 50s. Thursday, December 27 9 am Socio-economic discussion with urban planner Miguel Coyula, who will talk about housing, infrastructure, investment and restoration programs. He will to leave you with a better understanding of why Havana looks the way it does today and possibilities moving forward. At the hotel. 11 am Walking tour of the Old City. Wander through the Plaza Vieja, the oldest plaza in Havana, dating from the 16th century. See the Plaza de San Francisco, a cobbled plaza surrounded by buildings dating from the 18th century, dominated by the baroque Iglesia and Convento de San Francisco dating from 1719. Visit Plaza de la Catedral and the Catedral de San Cristóbal de La Habana. Visit the Plaza de Armas, a scenic tree-lined plaza formerly at the center of influence in Cuba. It is surrounded by many of the most historic structures in Havana as well as important monuments. 1 pm Lunch at Doña Eutimia paladar. Famous for its ropa vieja and frozen mojitos, this cozy paladar made Newsweek Magazine s top 100 restaurants in the world in 2012. The restaurant s location in the beautiful cathedral square is unbeatable. 3 pm Enjoy a discussion and private performance by Banda Ancha, a jazz band led by Yissy Garcia, an amazingly talented young percussionist. Banda Ancha calls its style high-speed Cuban jazz, a mixture of different rhythms like funk, reggae and samba, with Afro-Cuban influences. 8 pm Dinner Reservation at Tierra, Havana s newest international dinning spot. Located inside a container in the Fábrica de Arte Cubano, the restaurant mirrors the eclectic crowd, serving dishes from around the world. Calle 26, between Calle 11 and 13, Vedado (not included to be paid on the ground) Suggestion Following dinner, enjoy live music, art and dancing at La Fábrica de Arte Cubano. Rock star X Alfonso has turned this into meeting spot for a young, eclectic crowd of Cubans and foreigners.

Friday, December 28 10:30 am Visit a centuries-old mansion in Vedado neighborhood. Step inside this stately residence to discover what lies behind the crumbling facades of Havana s impressive mansions. Josie, who has lived in the house for over 60 years, will show us around and explain its rich history. 12 pm Enjoy a traditional Cuban meal overlooking the Straits of Florida at the Hotel Nacional. Tasty Cuban food served family style with a great view of the Havana sea wall and the old Spanish fortress. The setting brings many back to the 1950s, when the mafia held its annual meetings at this historic hotel. 2 pm Coffee and discussion with a family of artists, at AltaMira art loft, an art collective established by Edel Bordón and his family in their apartment building. 6 pm Spend the early evening at Café Madrigal with Frank Delgado, renowned singer and songwriter, for a discussion about the nueva trova movement in Cuba, followed by a musical performance. Café Madrigal, owned and run by film director Rafael Rosales, is housed in a beautiful colonial mansion with the walls lined with captivating artwork. Enjoy tasty tapas and cocktails. Saturday, December 29 9 am Depart for Viñales. Considered by many to be the most beautiful place in Cuba, the Viñales Valley National Monument holds stunning landscapes. The area is also famous for being the premier tobacco growing area in the world. 11:30 am Stop at the lookout at Los Jazmines hotel, which oversees the beautiful valley. 12 pm Enjoy a farm-to-table experience on the grounds of a local farm, where we will learn about Cuban agriculture and tobacco production, while indulging in an organic meal. 2 pm Check-in at bed and breakfasts, known as casas particulares, or private homes. Since the 1990s Cuban families have been permitted to rent rooms out of their family homes to foreigners. Featuring comfortable accommodations and ample privacy, it s a great way to interact with everyday Cubans. 5 pm Attend salsa-dancing lessons. Side-by-side with Cuban dancers, we ll learn new salsa techniques. Evening free Sunday, December 30 9 am Enjoy a morning stroll through tobacco fields to learn about the Valley s most important crop, and other flora and fauna of the area. Stop at the home of a local tobacco farmer, who will teach us about the cultivation and production process, followed by a rolling demo. He might even light up a cigar or two for the group. Late morning free lunch on own 1 pm Depart for Havana.

4 pm Check-in at hotel. 7:15 pm Dinner Reservation at La Guarida paladar, famous not only for its delectable dining, but also as the location for the film Strawberry and Chocolate. It is housed on the third floor of a large, old town house carrying the charming ambience of the early 1900s. Concordia e Gervasio y Lealtad, no. 418 altos, Centro Habana (not included to be paid on the ground) Monday, December 31 11 am Head to Eastern Havana for a tour of Alamar, a Soviet style housing project, and Havana s eastern beaches. Alamar, one of Havana s largest neighborhoods, is filled with prefabricated buildings completed by the popular micro brigade movement in Cuba in which neighbors constructed and worked on building their own homes. Meet with local residents and visit a farmers market and ration store to get a feel for local living. Visit Playas del Este (eastern beaches), where Habaneros go to escape the city heat. Take a stroll in the white sand and a dip in the turquoise water. Enjoy a packed lunch of sandwiches from the Hotel. 7:30 pm Dinner Reservation at La Terraza, a lovely restaurant on a terrace overlooking the famous Pardo Promenade of Old Havana. Prado 309 Esquina Virtudes (not included to be paid on the ground) Evening Enjoy New Year s Eve festivities - Ask your guide for recommendations Tuesday, January 1 10 am Visit to the Museum of Cuban Art. We will be accompanied by Nelson Herrera, an art historian, who will provide an overview of Cuban art and artists over the last four centuries. 12 pm Lunch Reservation at Al Carbon paladar. Created by the owners of the immensely popular Iván y Justo, this new restaurant strikes out in a different but equally successful direction, specializing in traditional Cuban dishes cooked over charcoal. Aguacate 9 Esq. A Chacon. Habana Vieja (not included to be paid on the ground) 2 pm Meet with the Barrio Habana team, a nonprofit organization that leads a community sports-arts program in Old Havana for children, at-risk youth and elderly people, while also contributing to preserve the heritage of the city. 7 pm Farewell Dinner at Paladar Atelier. This restaurant is equally known for its atmosphere and exquisite cuisine. The lighting and textures of the house, which was home to a pre-revolutionary senator, coupled with walls adorned in modern art, create a cozy, but modern setting. Wednesday, January 2 TBD Check-out and depart for the airport (2 ½ hours before your flight departs).
