August 8th, 2013 3 Situational Update Flood 2013 As of 2 nd August, Youth in Action: According to Youth in Action s initial rapid assessment 17 UCs of 3 Tehsils are affected with a population estimated to be16,00. These 17 low level areas UCs are Wah lashari, Haji pur, Harrand, Tibi Lundan, Noorpur Manju wala, Dajal, Nowshara Garbi, Tal Shumali, Muhammad pur, Bukhara in Tehsil, Jehanpur, Fetah pur, Rakh Fazilpur, Kotla Essan in Tehsil Rajan pur and sharqi, Umer Kot, Miranpur, Shahwali. Water inundated different areas from to 7 feet. Problems Identified: All the administrative offices are busy in relief and rescue operations. Roads are inundated and access to the flooding areas is difficult particularly city has accessibility issues. Cooked food and non-food items are required. There is a risk of disease outbreak in the district. In terms of relief activities, Qatar Charity provided 240 families, besides; National Rural Support Programme provided cooked food to 104 families. Sojhla organization started 2 medil/health mpaigns and treated 480 patients. As of 4th August, Serve The Nation (STN) & Jinnah Welfare Society (JWS): STN and JWS jointly conducted a rapid assessment in Tehsil and reported that the flood water inflow from three Daras namely Koh Sultan, Chacher and Kala Khosra was 16000 cusecs. The report also reveals that according to District Disaster Management Authority reported 2 sualties and approximately 40,000 people were affected. For relief activities, 33 mps were established. Assessment findings are There was no any Early Warning by the Government and people were not informed about the flood to evacuate the area; 30% people are still in need of rescue to the safer areas The water level in the flooded area reached as high as 7 to 9 ft. People were not prepared for the disaster and therefore could not rry Food item, non-food items along with them The infrastructure has been badly damaged in the area There is no easy access for protecting the flood affected except through boats or helicopters None of the affected have been so far attended by the humanitarian agencies As of th August, SAYA Foundation: Flash floods inundated a total of 12 union councils in three tehsils in the District adversely affecting more than 188,90 people and more than 100,000 population migrated and living in open sky without proper food, shelter and other necessities of lives. Moreover the migrated livestock are also need to supply fodder. Being close to the river bed, the eastern part of the district (Katcha zone) is frequently hit by flooding from the Indus River due to heavy monsoon rains in August and snow melt in the Himalayas. The western part of the district (lolly lled Pachadh) is frequently affected by flash floods which develop in the Suleiman mountain ranges. Both these hazards bring heavy losses in the two areas that cover roughly about 60% of the area and about 40% of the population, damaging houses made of mud, land and crops, livestock and other property. Agricultural lands are also inundated and cotton, sugarne, rice and fodder are main affected crops. More than 10,000 livestock affected.
