Brazil Brazil is the largest country on the continent of South America. It covers almost half of the entire continent! The western half of Brazil borders many other smaller countries. On the east side of the country is the Atlantic Ocean. The coast, the portion of the land that borders the ocean, is more than 4,000 miles long! The capital of Brazil is Brasilia. However, up until 1960, the capital was Rio de Janiero, a large city on the east coast of the country. The government decided they wanted to build a new capital city that was more in the middle of the country. Brasilia is a new city, but more than two million people live and work there. Many people who work in Brasilia work for the country s government, since that is where most political and governmental organizations are located. Brazil has a large population, or number of people living in a location, of more than 200 million people. Many Brazilians work in service industries like banking, education, and healthcare. Because the country has such a large coastline, there are also a lot of jobs surrounding the tourism industry. The residents who work in the countryside typically work in mining or farming. Brazil is a leading manufacturer in many minerals like iron ore and gold, and Brazil also exports much of the world s coffee. 1. What is the current capital of Brazil? Egyptian Pyramids The country of Egypt is on the northeastern corner of Africa. About seven thousand years ago, the Egyptians began to settle along the banks of the Nile River. The Nile River gave Egyptians food, like fish, and water for crops. It also allowed Egyptians to travel using boats, and to transport goods from one place to another. Because of this, the population around the Nile continued to grow. Villages became larger tribes, who were under one king called a pharaoh. The Egyptians believed that in order for a pharaoh to live forever and continue to protect them, his body needed to be preserved. They built pyramids to honor pharaohs who had died. Each pyramid held the pharaoh s body, as well as many of the pharaoh s riches and treasures and kept them protected. The pyramids were sophisticated and took an extremely long time to plan and create. Because it would take up to twenty years to finish, a pharaoh usually began planning his pyramid long before he was expected to die. Building one took thousands of people. Some were skilled workers who designed the overall assembly of the pyramid. Others were needed to properly transport and shape stone into the pyramid itself. Moving the stone was difficult. At times, stone was moved by boat. Other times they were put on sleds and dragged across the desert by many men working together. Once it was built, skilled sculptors and painters decorated it. The location had to be chosen very carefully. It needed to have ground that would support the immense weight of the pyramid. It needed to be near the Nile River so that resources could be transported to the building site. The sides also needed to face exact north, sound, east, and west, to follow the Egyptian beliefs. Once the location was worked out, the men began to work. Often, the pharaoh was buried below ground first, to protect the king and his treasures, and then the pyramid was built around it. 1.
