Tauern Bike Trail TOUR DESCRIPTION The Tauern Cycle Route Following the motto: Mountains, mountains nothing but mountains but none directly in your path, we've put this cycle tour together. Along the Salzach and Saalach to and from Salzburg. Familiar working villages and towns mark this cycle tour, you'll even acknowledge a taste of the big wide world when approaching the Festspiel- and in Mozart's town the musical town of Salzburg. A fantastic panorama and impressive view across the surrounding mountainous world of the Hochkönig, Watzmann and Grossglockner is guaranteed. There are many sights worth seeing, which makes this cycle tour of the "Tauern-Cycle-Route" really truly pleasurable.conditions: Surrounded by high mountains, the Tauern Bicycle Path in nothing to be afraid of: It follows the Salzach and Saalach rivers which means that the route takes you through predominantly flat or slightly hilly country, going downhill thanks to the 650 m of elevation difference between Krimml and Salzburg. An altitude covering 200 m from Salzburg to Kaprun is to overcome, this however is easy on the well built cycle paths.
1. day Salzburg arrival Starting town is Salzburg: Arrival day is always Saturday. 2. day Salzburg - Golling 53 km In Salzburg, where the Mozartkugel rolls, your cycle tour begins. Through the shaded Salzachauen, you slowly roll to Hallein, a former Celtic town rich in salt. Hallein surprises with a romantic old town with small streets, archways and houses with magnificent facades. The main attraction of the cute city is undoubtedly the world famous Celtic Museum. Past the Gollinger waterfall, the Tauern bike path winds through beautiful meadows. If you are already ready to cycle a few kilometers more, we recommend a more than worthwhile loop (about 8 km) through the romantic Bluntau valley. Finally you reach the picturesque village of Golling with its beautiful market square. In the evening, you can kick your legs or relax in the evening in one of the many restaurants. 3. day Golling - St. Johann / surroundings 40 km The Pass Lueg-Höhe is the first to be on the today`s program, followed by the "Salzachöfen", an imposing gorge, created by the Salzach River, from which the loud roar of the water is
heard from afar. At the foot of the Hochkönig you will enter the impressive village of Werfen. The world's largest ice cave invites you to a round trip through a fairytale world of glittering ice (duration approx. 4 hours). Continue through the Salzach Valley. Already visible from a distance, the fortress of Hohenwerfen rises above. You pass the district town of Bischofshofen, which takes place every year the final of the four-hill tour, and enjoy the magnificent view of the marked Tennengebirge on the Salzachdamm. The towers of the Pongauer Domes finally welcome you to St. Johann. We recommend you visit the Wildromantic Lakeland. 4. day St. Johann / surroundings - Kaprun 50 km Through the Gasteiner Valley you will meet the first highlight of the day: the Kitzlochklamm at Taxenbach, an imposing nature play. From there, the highest mountain in Austria, the Großglockner with the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße, attracts you. If you have any extra forces, we recommend you take a trip around Lake Zell (approx. 18 km). From Bruck, you will be only a few kilometers from the former mountain guide village of Kaprun. 5. day Kaprun - Krimml - Kaprun 60 km A narrow gauge-railway takes you along with your bike from Kaprun to Krimml. A definite must is a visit to the well known Krimml waterfalls, your journey through the National Park Hohe Tauern takes you through colourful mountainous countryside with open fields, woods, forests and pastures, passing many places of interest. Leisurley you go back to Krimml. 6. day Kaprun - Lofer 50 km Whoever counts the mountains around Kaprun comes to at least 250 two- and threethousanders. Start the day with a cable car ride to the Schmittenhöhe and enjoy the view of the mountains and the lake Zell. Pittoresk lies on the banks of the river Zell, from where it goes on through sappy green pastures and meadows to Saalfelden. Here you can visit Schloss Ritzen and the Ritzensee. A small but worthwhile detour takes you to Maria Alm, surrounded by the peaks of the Steinernes Meer. Just before Lofer, you will find the Lamprechtshöhle, the deepest water-bearing cave in Austria. Your Etapenziel Lofer welcomes you with a magnificent view of the imposing mountain ranges of the Loferer and Reither Steinberge. 7. day Lofer - Salzburg 55 km You leave Lofer with its magnificently preserved village center and winding alleys, and on quiet paths and through the splendid meadows of the Pinzgauer Saalachtal, follow the road to Unken, amidst beautiful mountain forests, between the bottlenecks of the Knie and Steinpasses. On the "Kleine deutsche Eck", and thus the famous spa town of Bad Reichenhall (Germany), you cycle along the Saalach to Salzburg, surrounded by the mighty mountain ranges of the Berchtesgaden and Chiemgau Alps. Here Mozart and Karajan were born, and here also the nokers of the same name were born. In Salzburg you can also find a pleasure castle, which was built by an archbishop. There is still plenty of time for a stroll through the streets and streets of Salzburg. 8. day Salzburg Departure With pleasure we will reserve any extra nights accommodation for you.

Conditions of cycle paths You usually cycleflat to slightly on well signposted cycle paths and quiet secondary roads. Short sections mainly along the Saalach are unpaved, but easy to drive. The two longer slopes can be covered by rail. Available rental bikes Choose between a 7-speed unisex tour wheel with hub shifting and a back-pedal brake or a 27-speed female or male tour wheel with chain shift and freewheel. All wheels (the 7-speed wheels in addition with the brake pedal) have two well-regulated rim brakes (V-Brakes) with a decent brake force and a suspension fork. They are on 28-inch wheels with stable spokes and rugged aluminum hollow-chamber rims. The saddle, which is easily adjustable in height and inclination, and the tilt-adjustable handlebar allow a comfortable sitting position.
