A Well Connected Travel special! ------------------------------------------- Commemorative Cruise in the Aegean Sea by chartered Turkish gulet (yacht) ---------------------------------------- 26 April to 5 May 2015 (Voyage 2) Çanakkale is a town & seaport in Turkey, on the southern (Asian) coast of the Dardanelles at their narrowest point. Çanakkale has territory in both Europe and Asia. Ferries cross here from the Asian to the European side of the strait. The city is the nearest major town to the site of ancient Troy and the "wooden horse" from the 2004 movie Troy is exhibited on the seafront. Voyage No. 2 Commemorative Cruise embarkation is Çanakkale harbour. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tenedos is an island of Turkey in the northern part of the Aegean Sea. It is the third largest Turkish island after Gökçeada & Marmara. The island is famous for grapes! This is the site where the Greeks hid their fleet near the end of the Trojan War in order to trick the Trojans into believing the war was over and into taking the Trojan Horse within their city walls. The island was important throughout antiquity due to its strategic location at the entrance of the Dardanelles. In following centuries, the island came under the control of a series of regional powers - the Persian Empire, the Delian League, Alexander the Great, the Pergamon Kingdom, the Roman Empire and its successor the Byzantine Empire, before passing to the Republic of Venice. As a result of the 1381 War of Chioggia between Genoa & Venice the entire population was evacuated & the town was demolished. The Ottoman Empire controlled the island in 1455. During their rule, it was resettled by both Greeks & Turks. In 1807, the island was temporarily invaded by Russians. During this invasion the town was burnt down and many Turkish residents left the island. Under Greek administration from 1912 and 1923, Tenedos was ceded to the new Turkish republic after the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire in 1923. It remained majority Greek till the l1960 s/early 1970 s, when many Greeks emigrated due to discrimination & other opportunities elsewhere. Late last century immigration commenced from mainland Turkey. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Salamander A Turkish gulet traditional sailing ship Çanakkale, Turkey: Kilitbahir Castle Tenedos: Bozcaada citadel, Bozcaada

Troy was a city, both factual and legendary, in northwest Anatolia in what is now Turkey, south of the southwest end of the Dardanelles and northwest of Mount Ida. It is best known for being the setting of the Trojan War described in the Greek Epic Cycle and especially in the Iliad, one of the two epic poems attributed to Homer. A new city called Ilium was founded on the site in the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus. It flourished until the establishment of Constantinople and declined gradually during the Byzantine era. In 1865, English archaeologist Frank Calvert excavated trial trenches in a field he had bought from a local farmer at Hisarlık and in 1868, Heinrich Schliemann, a wealthy German businessman and archaeologist, also began excavating in the area after a chance meeting with Calvert in Çanakkale. These excavations revealed several cities built in succession. Schliemann was at first skeptical about the identification of Hisarlik with Troy, but was persuaded by Calvert and took over Calvert's excavations on the eastern half of the Hisarlik site, which was on Calvert's property. Today, the hill at Hisarlik has given its name to a small village near the ruins. Troy was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1998. Dalyan is a town on the south-west coast of Turkey, achieving international fame in 1987 when developers wanted to build a luxury hotel on the nearby İztuzu Daylan Beach, Koyu is a used breeding as a ground harbour for for the our endangered land connection loggerhead and excursion sea turtle to species. Oinousses is a cluster of 9 islands, 2 kilometres off the north-east coast of the Greek island of Chios & 8 km west of Turkey, with locals involved in seafaring, fishing & goat-herding. The islands are noted as the origin of an unusual cluster of successful ship-owning families: the Lemos, Pateras, Hadjipateras, Kollakis & Lyras families. In the main, the majority of the families live elsewhere, but the islands & the town are still well maintained with a strong naval connection. Lesbos is sometimes referred to as Mytilini. Lesbos is located in the northeast Aegean Sea. It is the third largest Greek island and separated from Turkey by the narrow Mytilini Strait. Mytilene was founded in the 11th century BC by the family Penthilidae, who arrived from Thessaly, and ruled the city-state until a popular revolt (590 580 BC) led by Pittacus of Mytilene ended their rule. In the early Middle Ages, it was under Byzantine and Genovese rule. Lesbos was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1462, who ruled the island until the First Balkan War in 1912, when it became part of the Kingdom of Greece. Two of the nine lyric poets in Ancient Greek literature, Alcaeus and Sappho, were from Lesbos. One meaning of the word lesbian derives from the poems of Sappho, writing with strong emotional content directed towards other women. Due to this association, Lesbos and especially the town of Eresos, her birthplace, are visited frequently by lesbian tourists. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chios is the fifth largest of the Greek islands, situated in the Aegean Sea, 7 kilometers off the Anatolian coast. The island is separated from Turkey by the Chios Strait. Chios is notable for mastic gum and its nickname is The mastic island. Attractions include medieval villages and the 11th-century monastery of Nea Moni, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The principal town of the island is Chios town, referred to as "Chora" - meaning land or country, but usually denoting a capital or settlement at the highest point of a Greek island. Ephesus was an ancient Greek city on the Ionian coast, 3 kilometers southwest of present-day Selçuk, Turkey. Built in the 10 th century BC on the site of the former Arzawan capital by Attic & Ionian Greek colonists, it was one of 12 cities in the Ionian League during the Classical Greek era. The city flourished under the control of the Roman Republic. In 129 BC. Ephesus had a population of between 33,600-56,000 people in the Roman period, making it the 3 rd largest city of Roman Asia Minor. The city was famed for the Temple of Artemis (completed about 550 BC) - one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. In 268 AD, the Temple was destroyed in a raid by the Goths. Emperor Constantine I rebuilt much of the city but following the Edict of Thessalonica from emperor Theodosius I, but what remained of the temple was destroyed 401 AD by a group led by St. John Chrysostom. The town was partly destroyed in 614 AD by an earthquake in. The city's importance declined as the harbor began silting up by the Cayster River. Ephesus was one of the 7 churches of Asia that are cited in the Bible. The Gospel of John may have been written here. It was the site of several 5 th century Christian Councils. It contains a large gladiators' graveyard. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Didyma was an ancient Greek sanctuary on the Turkish coast, containing a temple and the oracle of Apollo, Didymaion. Didyma (meaning twin in Greek) was the largest and most significant sanctuary on the territory of the great classical city Miletus. To approach it, visitors would follow the Sacred Way to Didyma, about 17 km long. Along the way, were ritual way-stations, and statues of members of the Branchidae family, male and female, as well as animal figures. Some of these statues, dating to the 6th century BC are now in the British Museum, taken by Charles Newton in the 19th century. Recent excavations by a German team of archaeologists have uncovered a major sanctuary dedicated to Artemis, with the key ritual focus being water ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kuşadası is your disembarkation point on Turkey's Aegean coast. Kuşadası lies at a distance of 95 km to the south from the region's largest metropolitan center of İzmir (where you will depart by air) and 71 km from the provincial seat of Aydın, which is situated inland. Upon departing Kuşadası your transfer coach will take you to İzmir airport. We wish Voyage No. 2 Commemorative Cruise participants a safe and pleasant onward journey.
