Hannah will study for two semesters starting this fall and one research term. Hannah graduated from Willamette University in 2002, majoring in Sociology. Hannah has worked with a number of non-profit focused on domestic violence and people with disabilities, including Transitions Foundation in Antigua, Guatemala. Her goals include working with under-represented people, especially women and those with disabilities, around issues of community engagement and economic development with a focus on communities impacted by small arms violence. Sumba, Indonesia Global Grant Recently Rotarian Stew Martin from the Seaside RC visited Sumba, Indonesia to check progress of D5100 s Global Grant water & sanitation project. Over a dozen Rotary clubs in Oregon/Washington and Australia have joined hands with the Rotary Club of Bali Kuta and Yayasan Harapan Sumba - together committed to helping the villagers build shared rainwater collection tanks, new safe toilets, learn how to handle water, wash hands, and be much healthier. Already the village is starting to look cleaner, people are learning not to openly defecate, and are starting to build their own toilets. There is a wonderful buzz of learning and doing. The village leaders at each level, from dusun to camat, plus the education ministry, are all supportive of this project. It won't be quick or easy, but we are very optimistic that it will change their lives much for the better. It's a great team effort.

Eighty percent of the world is now certified polio free, and two of the three strains of the disease have been eradicated, according to Dr. Bruce Aylward, who heads the polio eradication program at the World Health Organization. Still, major challenges remain, including the international spread of the disease, the insecurity in endemic countries, and geopolitical tensions. In May WHO declared polio a public health emergency, asking the world to step up its vaccination efforts for international travelers. TRF Chair Describes Goals of The Rotary Foundation by Dong Kurn (D.K.) Lee, TRF Trustee Chair 2013-14 Some of you know the words of actor Christopher Reeve: So many of our dreams at first seem impossible, then they seem improbable, and then, when we summon the will, they become inevitable. I began my year as Rotary Foundation trustee chair with four goals: to eradicate polio, build ownership and pride in our Foundation, launch our new grant model, and engage in innovative partnerships and projects. It has been an exciting year of change, growth, and new achievements, and as I end my term, I am inexpressibly proud of the work I have seen Rotarians do. Perhaps one of the most important milestones we have seen this year was the World Health Organization s certification of Southeast Asia as polio-free. This was a long-awaited declaration. Just five years ago, India represented nearly half of all polio cases worldwide. The 11 countries in the region Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, North Korea, Sri Lanka, and Thailand are home to 1.8 billion people and represent the fourth of six regions worldwide to be officially certified polio-free. This landmark didn t happen on its own; it embodies a lot of hard work by many dedicated volunteers. In my final month of service as trustee chair of our Rotary Foundation, I leave feeling grateful. I m grateful for the opportunity to know so many of you hard-working and devoted Rotarians, and I m grateful for all your help in making the four goals I set out with become a reality. 2014 Rotary Fiscal Year-end Deadlines for TRF Contributions Credit Cards: Online via www.rotary.org - must be authorized on or prior to 30 June 2014, midnight (CST) Fax: (847-328-5260) - must be received by 30 June 2014 Phone: (866-976-8279) - must be received prior to the close of business 30 June 2014.
