FROM BRESSANONE TO LJUBLJANA From the bishop s town to the green capital city!!! NEW 2018!!! Self-guided tour approx. 317-327 km 8 days / 7 nights Description Starting from the Bishop`s town, the first part of the tour leads through the Pustertal, also called the green valley of South Tyrol. The cycle path follows the course of the rivers Rienz and Drau through Eastern Tyrol and further to the lake district Carinthia. En route different crystal-clear swimming lakes invite to a jump in the refreshing wet. Soon you leave Austria behind and pass the border to Slovenia. It is the first country in the world to be declared a green destination based on the Green Destinations Criteria. The variety of landscapes surprises. At the magical lake Bled you can enjoy the panorama over the Julian Alps. The aim of the trip is Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia. Its social and environmental awareness has a long tradition which you will feel with every step, and it`s no coincidence that the city was named the European Green Capital of 2016. In the last years it has become one of the most popular city destinations of Europe. Characteristics of the route Easy bike tour. The tour goes along bike paths or very quiet side roads, through small villages and picturesque landscape. Most of the time the paths are asphalted otherwise you cycle on gravelled roads. The long incline from Bressanone to Sciaves (about 5 km) at the beginning of the tour can be bypassed by train. The last part from Bled to Ljubljana is slight hilly. A day by day account of the route Day 1: Arrival in Brixen/Bressanone Diocese town with cathedral and Hofburg with crib collection; Day 2: to Bruneck/Brunico (approx. 40 km) Monastery Kloster Neustift and Mühlbacher Klause; Day 3: to Niederdorf/Villabassa - Toblach/Dobbiaco (30 km) Folklore museum in Dietenheim, lake Toblach and Landro; Day 4: to Oberdrauburg/Kötschach Mauthen (approx. 69 km) Visit the outdoor museum Aguntum ; Day 5: to Feistritz an der Gail (approx. 65 km) Lake Pressegg invite all epicures to a relaxing break; Day 6: to Bled (approx. 55-65 km) You reach the italian border and travel on to Slovenia; Day 7: to Ljubljana (approx. 58 km) The river Sava leads you to the capital city Ljubljana; Day 8: Departure Visit one of the many museums;
detailed routing Day 1: Arrival in Brixen/Bressanone Individual arrival at the hotel in Bressanone. Day 2: Brixen/Bressanone - Bruneck/Brunico (approx. 40 km) From Bressanone you go past the monastery Kloster Neustift and the Mühlbacher Klause to the valley Pustertal. This was once the boundary between the two provinces of Rätien and Norikum. Having reached the town of Brunico you may also cycle to Campo Tures and visit the castle. Day 3: Bruneck/Brunico - Niederdorf/Villabassa or Toblach/Dobbiaco (approx. 30 km) Before you leave Brunico you can visit the folklore museum in Dietenheim (in August open also on Mondays). Today s tour takes you slightly uphill to Valdaora and then onto Villabassa/Dobbiaco. For those with enough energy, an added extra would be a trip to lake Toblacher See or lake Dürrensee, two beautiful lakes in the area of Dobbiaco. The last one is close to the view of the famous Drei Zinnen ( Three Peaks ). Day 4: Villabassa/Dobbiaco Oberdrauburg/ Kötschach Mauthen (approx. 69 km) Starting in Villabassa or Dobbiaco, you cycle along the bike path to San Candido and then on to Sillian. Afterwards it`s downhill all the way to the Austrian town of Lienz, where already the Illyrer founded one colony, which was developed by the Romans to the city Aguntum. Passing the Tiroler Tor or Kärntner Tor depending on the angle of view you get to Oberdrauburg/Kötschach Mauthen. Day 5: Oberdrauburg/Kötschach Mauthen - Feistritz an der Gail (approx. 65 km) After a short transfer to the Gailberg Pass (350 m difference in altitude / 6 km) you then descend to Kötschach-Mauthen. On the bike path of the Gail Valley you cycle comfortably past Hermagor. Before you reach Feistritz Lake Pressegg will invite all epicures to a relaxing break. Day 6: Feistritz an der Gail - Bled (approx. 55-65 km) Along your way you reach the Italian border and then continue on the cycle path. Now you leave Italy and travel on to Slovenia, passing the famous ski area of Kranjska Gora, the bike path runs through the wonderful, and mostly unknown, countryside of Slovenia. You spend the night at the romantic Lake Bled. The last 10 km of the tour can be shortened using the train (ticket not included). Day 7: Bled - Ljubljana (approx. 58 km) After leaving Bled and his wonderful lake you cycle over the Ribno field along the river Sava Bohinjka to Radovljica, with his charming historic centre and the beekeeping museum. Cycling through picturesque landscapes and forests you get to Kranj, the principal town of the region Gorenjska-Oberkrain. The river Sava leads you to the capital city Ljubljana.
