Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve International projects Cross-border Cooperation

Integrated system for monitoring the environment factors, biodiversity and natural resources in the cross-border Biosphere Reserve Danube Delta Romania/Ukraine Implementation period: 01.12.2006 30.11.2008 (24 months)

General objective Improve the cross-border integration in border regions (biosphere reserves) by establishing the good basis for sustainable economic development through the development of the cross-border infrastructure.

Main achievements: - Evaluation of the existing situation in both sites of Danube Delta; - Joint Monitoring Program; - Mobile laboratory; -Training the staff involved in the implementation of integrated monitoring program (harmonising the working methodology in both protected areas); -Field trips (seasonal survey, sample collection); -Reports on the environment quality situation (on both sides of Danube Delta); -Results dissemination for the target groups (reports for the authorities, awareness campaign for the population);

Continuity and Sustainability The DATABASE will be used in the future cross-border collaboration program Romania/Ukraine and can be extended to other protected areas within Lower Danube Euroregion The JOINT MONITORING PROGRAM will be implemented after the project finalization and can be extended to other protected areas within Lower Danube Euroregion. The JOING WORKING GROUP will continue to operate after the completion of the project as a permanent structure for the cross-border collaboration. WEBPAGE/INFORMATIVE BULLETIN will offer possibilities to inform the local people and other interested parties on the environmental condition of the Danube Delta Cross-border Biosphere Reserve Ro/Ua.

Cross border cooperation demonstrating the multiple use and benefits of wetlands restoration (in Zagen and Stensovsko Zhibrianskie Plavni Polders) in Danube Delta Cross border Biosphere Reserve Romania/Ukraine. Implementation period: 28 August 2007 27 June 2009

General objective Improve the cross-border integration in border regions by establishing the good basis for sustainable economic development through the development of the cross border infrastructure. Specific objective Demonstrate the role of wetlands restoration for ecology, economy, recreation, community involvement, monitoring, research and education.

Expected results: Feasibility study and Impact study for Zagen wetland restoration; Experience exchange on multiple use and benefits of restored wetlands (3 study visits); Leaflets (500 pieces), disseminated in Romania and in Ukraine; Media releases, ensuring visibility actions for the project financial support from EC.

Terms of Reference for Feasibility Study for the ecological restoration of Zagen Polder: Fill-up Zagen Polder with water from Danube; Restore a pattern of habitats specific to wetlands, for the development of aquatic flora and fauna and of natural resources: fish, reed, rush, wood, by ensuring an adequate water regime; Create a leisure zone for the inhabitants and visitors of Tulcea town; Create an inner channel for small boats, with the possibility to place on its banks specific tourist attractions (a fishing collecting point, a windmill, traditional fishermen s houses, crafting workshops, bird watching towers, a visitor center, etc.)
