champalimaud research champalimaud centre for the unknown visitor guide

Dear Guest, Welcome to the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown (CCU). Inaugurated on October 5 th 2010, the CCU is now a part of the important riverside area of Belém, near the magnificent Tower of Belém. This area, where the river Tejo meets the Atlantic Ocean, is of great historical significance as the great Portuguese pioneers sailed from this location to discover the unknown in the XV and XVI centuries. The presence of the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown leverages this historical heritage by creating an inspirational link between the discoveries of yesteryear and the epic adventure of scientific research. Here, everything converges in the creation of a unique atmosphere for the development of the most advanced multidisciplinary and translational research in the field of biomedicine. The building s contemporary architecture, along with its functionality, offers outstanding conditions to investigators, academics and health professionals, from Portugal and beyond, to carry out work oriented towards excellence and practical results. The CCU covers an area of 60,000m 2 facing the river Tejo and comprises three large areas. The main building houses the Champalimaud Clinical Centre s diagnostic and treatment facilities, an indoor garden, research laboratories and administrative services, all interlinked to promote discussion and collaboration between scientists, clinicians and other professionals. A tropical pergola-covered garden is at the heart of this structure. The Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown is a state-of-the-art facility for science, medicine, technology and public use. Wishing you a wonderful visit.

HOW TO GET TO THE CCU FROM THE AIRPORT The best way to get to the CCU from the airport is by taxi and it should cost between 12-17. We advise taking a taxi from outside Departures as there is no waiting line, compared to Arrivals. Ask for Fundação Champalimaud (foon- DA-sow cham-pal-ee-mow) or Doca Pesca (Doka Pesh-ka). If you expect to be reimbursed please ask the driver to include the Foundation s tax number ( 507131827 ) in the receipt. HOW TO GO FROM THE AIRPORT TO DOWNTOWN LISBON BY TAXI (10 to 15 min depending on traffic) We recommend taking a taxi outside departures, one floor up from arrivals. Even with luggage, it should cost you between 10 and 15. Please be sure to ask for a receipt. BY METRO (underground, 15 to 20 min) The station at the airport, on the red line, quickly takes you to the centre of the city, reaching the final station of São Sebastião in about 20 minutes. BY AEROBUS The airport special bus runs between the airport and the city centre. A ticket may be purchased directly from the driver and currently stands at 3.50. They run every 20 or 30 min. and stop at important points in the city, such as Marquês de Pombal, Avenida da Liberdade, Restauradores, Rossio, Praça do Comércio and Cais do Sodré. On board, there are screens showing each stop as the bus approaches the area. HOW TO GET TO THE CCU FROM DOWNTOWN LISBON BY TAXI (10 to 15 min) Ask for Fundação Champalimaud (foon- DA-sow cham-pal-ee-mow) or Doca Pesca (Doka Pesh-ka).The ride should cost around 8 and if you expect to be reimbursed please ask the driver to include the Foundation s tax number ( 507131827 ) in the receipt. BY TRAIN (10 min + 10 min walk) Take the train (direction Cascais) from Cais do Sodré station (Metro: Cais do Sodré green line). Exit in Algés. When exiting Algés train station, go down and then to your right, towards the river. BY TRAM (45 min + 10 min walk) Take the 15 tram from Praça da Figueira. Exit in Largo da Princesa. Cross the bridge to the other side of the train tracks (on the same side of Vela Latina Restaurant) and walk through the Belém Tower park to the Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown (river will be on your left).
