MisRAR 1 REGION OF EPIRUS REGIONAL UNIT OF THESPROTIA PRESENTATION BATZIAS NIKOLAOS MIRANDELA APRIL 2011 Regional Unit of Thesprotia

Two different cases Spatial Mitigation Instruments in the Region of Epirus 2 A) Forest Fires i) Big forests ii) Small forests around ciities B) Floods Reginal Unit of Thesprotia

Regional Unit of Thesprotia Mitigation Instruments for forest fires -Why are forests fires a significant problem for Thesprotia and Epirus? i) Big forests ii) Morfology of the area (hight mountains, difficult access for vehicles) iii) Mediterranean climate iv) Lots of human activities in and near the forests -Which are the characteristics of the places which are thought extemely valnurable? -type of trees (pines) -Many people living near the place Examples: little forests around Igoumenitsa and Ioannina, area of Filiates in the north part of Thesprotia Last summer we had alarms for fire at the mountains in the north part of Thesprotia. 3

Spatial Mitigation Instruments for forest fires -Since forest fires can have tremendus environmental and social impact (loss of fortunes, human lives) measures should be taken in order to i) prevent them from happening ii) cause the least possible damage when they occur iii) give the fire brigate the opportunity to act effectivily iv) improve recovery -Which are the main spatial mitigation instuments for forest fires which were identified in the Region of Epirus? A) Creation of observatories in the forest B) Creation of water tanks C) Creation of a pipe network in order to transfer the water D) Creation of little buildings in the forest, where equipment can be stored E) Creation of forest-roads, offering the fire brigate vehicles better access F) Zones for fire protection G) Clean the forest from dead organic material (for forests around cities) Regional Unit of Thesprotia 4

Mitigation Instruments Materialized -KONITSA i) 2 observatories (Agios Minas, Konitsa) ii) 7 water tanks (2 at Eleythero, 1 at Pournia, 1 at Amarando, 1 at Langada, 1 at Drosopigi, 1 at Kastania) 5 Regional Unit of Thesprotia

Mitigation Instruments Materialized -Metsovo i) 2 observatories (1 at Flabourari, 1 at Anilio) ii) 8 water tanks (4 at Vovousa, 1 at Flabourari, 1 at Metsovo, 2 at Milia) 6

- Ioannina Mitigation Instruments Materialized 7 i) 1 observatory (at Asprageli) ii) 10 water tanks (5 at the forest of Laista, 1 at Makrino, 1 at Pramanda, 1 at Katamaxh, 1 at Palaiopirgos, 1 at Fotino) iii) A net for fire protection at the little forest of the city of Ioannina.6 underground tanks.6 little buildings containing equipment. net of pipes (about 10 km long). 71 points where you can get water from the pipes Regional unit of Thesprotia

Mitigation Instruments Materialized 8

Mitigation Instruments Materialized 9 -Moreover a net of forest-roads exist, while in some cases dead organic material is taken away from the forest But -always more mitigation instruments and better infrustructure is needed -limited budget -limited human resourses Regional Unit of Thesprotia 27/05/2010

Spatial Mitigation Instruments for flooding -Why are floods a problem for Thesprotia and Epirus? i) west part of Greece, the climate is not so dry as in the East 10 ii) the clouds stop at the mountains of Epirus iii) many rivers or water flows iv) climate change/extreme storms -Incidents i) Last Winter the river Kalamas was flooded and caused damage to crops and human lives were put at risk ii) Last Winter due to continuous heavy rainfall the area around the city of Ioannina was transformed to a lake! The main road that connecs the port of Igoumenitsa with Ioannina couldn't be used for 15 days! Regional Unit of Thesprotia

Spatial Mitigation Instruments for flooding 11 -Floods cause loss of money and put in danger human lives -Spatial Mitigation instruments for floods idendified in the region of Epirus Creation of draining ditches Clean of torrents (mud, rocks, trunks etc) Creation of irrigation-draining systems (canals, iron doors, tanks) Creation of sarzanet (little walls) Creation of dykes Creation of mesh with burnt trunks (burnt mountains) Regional Unit of Thesprotia

Mitigation Instruments Materialized 12 -cleaning draining ditch (Anatoli, budget 45000 E)

Mitigation Instruments Materialized 13 -Creation of irrigation/draining systems (Smirtia, budget 250000 E)

Mitigation Instruments Materialized 14 -Creation of sarzanet and improvement of irrigation system (Aoos river, budget 30000 E)

Mitigation Instruments Materialized 15 -Creation of dykes (Konitsa, budget 65000 E)

Mitigation Instruments 16 -Mesh of burnt trunks (Not in the Region of Epirus)

Mitigation Instruments for flooding 17 -Problems still exist Limited budget Proper analysis of the infrastructure really needed Consideration of the impact on the environment THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION! Information Batzias Nikolaos:nimpatzi@thesprotia.gr Regional Unit of Thesprotia
