Exhibition: : The Europe of Greece. Colonies and Coins from the Alpha Bank Collection (11.4.2014-18.10.2015) The exhibition THE EUROPE OF GREECE. COLONIES AND COINS FROM THE ALPHA BANK COLLECTION was presented by the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection and the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki at two of the Museum s Temporary Exhibitions Galleries in 2015 too. The Exhibition was scheduled to run from 11 April 2014 until 19 April 2015. However, it was extended until 18 October 2015 due to the particular interest it generated and the high turnout it attracted. In the context of the Exhibition 121 coins from Greek colonies, accompanied by 61 unique ancient artefacts, were presented. In total, 200,000 persons visited the Exhibition. Exhibition: Where Silver was Born. Athenian Archaic Coinage: Mines, Metals and Coins (28.5.2015-31.12.2015) The Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection participated in the exhibition Where Silver was Born. Athenian Archaic Coinage. Mines, Metals and Coins, at the Epigraphic and Numismatic Museum, with ten Archaic coins issued by Athens and Siphnos, two city-states possessing their own mines and being among the first ones to strike coins.
Online Exhibition: Athenian Owls (October 2015-March 2016) The Numismatic Collection of the Bank has embarked on a new collaboration with Politismos Museum of Greek History, which was launched on 28 October 2015. This online Museum is a project carried out by the Greek- American community in Sacramento, California (U.S.A.), which numbers approximately 12,000 members. It collaborates with major Museums, Collections and Universities both in Greece and abroad and its main objective is to promote Greek history and culture, from antiquity to the present day. The first exhibition of Politismos Museum of Greek History entitled Athenian Owls has been organised by the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection and presents the best-known coin of antiquity: the tetradrachm of the city of Athens bearing the head of the goddess Athena on the obverse and the owl on the reverse. This coin circulated beyond the territorial boundaries of the issuing authority and was widely used in international transactions for a long period of time. Exhibition duration: October 2015-March 2016 http://politismosmuseum.org/en/ Educational Exhibition in Nafplio: MYTH: Ancient and Contemporary Greek Art from the Alpha Bank Collections / With Ariadne s thread, the myth I unfold The educational exhibition MYTH: Ancient and Contemporary Greek Art from the Alpha Bank Collections, organised by the Art Collection and the Numismatic Collection of the Bank, is presented at the Alpha Bank Cultural Centre in Nafplio for the third year. In the context of the Exhibition, the educational programme entitled With Ariadne s thread, the myth I unfold is offered. During 2015, the Educational Programme was attended by 1,063 children.
Educational Programme: Daring Explorers and Pioneer Colonists (30.10.2014-18.10.2015) The educational programme entitled Daring Explorers and Pioneer Colonists and intended for Elementary School students of the last three grades and Gymnasium students has been carried out in the context of the exhibition The Europe of Greece: Colonies and Coins from the Alpha Bank Collection. For the purposes of the Programme and in order to encourage the participation of children of different ages and interests, two educational leaflets have been specially designed for the aforementioned age groups by museum educator specialists, museologists and archaeologists of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. The Educational Programme was attended by 455 children. Educational Event at the Epigraphic and Numismatic Museum for the children of the Bank s Employees (6.6.2015) In the context of the exhibition Where Silver was Born, which was presented at the Epigraphic and Numismatic Museum, the educational event Learning about Ancient Coins, intended for the children of the Bank s Employees, was held at the Museum s Garden on Saturday 6 June 2015. In parallel with the Educational Event, an archaeologist of the Museum offered the Employees who accompanied their children a guided tour of the Exhibition.
Educational Programme of the Numismatic Collection: Learning about Ancient Coins The educational programme Learning about Ancient Coins, intended for Elementary School and Gymnasium students, is conducted in the permanent Exhibition Space of the Numismatic Collection at 41, Panepistimiou Street, Athens and, if requested, at schools. During 2015 the Programme was attended by: the fourth-grade students of the 1st Elementary School of Aghios Dimitrios the fourth-grade students of the Psychico College Elementary School the second-grade students of the 60th Gymnasium of Athens. Guided Tour for the Bank s Personnel of Northern Greece in the context of the exhibition The Europe of Greece: Colonies and Coins from the Alpha Bank Collection (7.2.2015) On Saturday, 7 February 2015, a guided tour for the Bank s Personnel was offered in the context of the exhibition The Europe of Greece: Colonies and Coins from the Alpha Bank Collection which was organised by the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection and the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. The guided tour was conducted by the Curator of the Bank s Numismatic Collection, Dr Dimitra Tsangari.
Scientific Meeting and Publication of Proceedings: Greek Colonisation: New Data, Current Approaches The Scientific Meeting Greek Colonisation: New Data, Current Approaches was successfully held on Friday, 6 February 2015, at the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. The Meeting was organised by the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection and the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki in the context of the exhibition The Europe of Greece: Colonies and Coins from the Alpha Bank Collection. Fifteen historians and archaeologists (excavators, museum directors, university professors) from Greece, Italy, Spain, Ukraine and Australia, who are engaged with the study of the Greek Colonisation, participated in the Meeting and presented new data from the area of their excavation works as well as syntheses of various aspects of this phenomenon. The Curator of the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, Dr Dimitra Tsangari, made an announcement entitled Images of the Sea on the Coins of Ancient Greek Colonies and presented twenty five coins from the Bank s Collection inspired by sea themes. The Proceedings of the Scientific Meeting were published by Alpha Bank in December 2015.
Presentation of the Numismatic Collection at the University of the Aegean in Rhodes (23-24.5.2015) The Curator of the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, Dr Dimitra Tsangari, gave a presentation on The Greece of Colonies: A Numismatic Approach to postgraduate students of the University of the Aegean in Rhodes on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 May 2015. The event was held at the invitation of Dr Manolis Stefanakis, Professor and Director of the Postgraduate Studies Programme entitled Archaeology of the Eastern Mediterranean: Greece, Egypt, Near East of the School of Humanities at the University of the Aegean. Lecture in Yannitsa: History of Coins Macedonia (8.10.2015) On Thursday, 8 October 2015, a lecture entitled History of Coins Macedonia was held at the Cultural Centre of Yannitsa. The lecture was delivered by the Curator of the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, Dr Dimitra Tsangari. The aim of the event was, on the one hand, to present the history of the main transactional means and, on the other hand, to familiarise attendees with the history and the archeological sites of Macedonia, through the region s rich coinage. The event was attended by 150 persons. Sale of New Copies of Ancient Coins: Lysimachus, Corinth, Larissa Τhree new copies of ancient coins, which belong to the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection, will be sold at the ALPHA BANK CULTURE store. The copies, available in limited quantities, are made of 925ο silver and bear an incised A (for Αντίγραφο=copy in Greek) on the reverse, in order to be distinguished from genuine coins. Participation of the Banknote Museum of the Ionian Bank in the International Museum Day (15-18.5.2015) In the context of the celebration of the International Museum Day on 18 May 2015, the Banknote Museum of the Ionian Bank participated in the events carried out in Corfu from 15 to 18 May 2015, on the initiative of the Department of Archives, Library Science and Museology of the Ionian University. Throughout the above-mentioned four-day period, free guided tours were conducted at the premises of the Banknote Museum of the Ionian Bank, while on Friday 15 May 2015 a one-day conference took place at the Ionian University during which the History and Collection of the Museum were presented among other topics. Additionally, an educational event entitled Learning about Ancient Coins was held at the Museum on Sunday 17 May 2015. Presentation of the Banknote Museum of the Ionian Bank at the exhibition Ionian Islands Virtual World (9-30.7.2015) A virtual tour of the Banknote Museum of the Ionian Bank was presented at the exhibition Ionian Islands Virtual World, organised by the Department of Informatics of the Ionian University from 9 to 30 July 2015 at the Municipal Gallery of Corfu. In the context of the Exhibition, virtual world videos were projected on alternate themes related to the culture and the natural beauties of the Ionian Islands.
