EDUCATION The CAOSE educational program seeks to develop a critical mass of trained individuals with the ability to make informed and sustainable decisions concerning our coastal and ocean environment and infrastructure. INGE 507: Ocean Wave Dynamics for Engineers Introduction to Coastal Engineering and Processes INGE 5185 MJ 1:30-1:45 pm Stefani 10 Dr. Sylvia Rodríguez Abudo - Spring 014 Course Outline Prerequisites: INGE 4015 (Fluid Mechanics) and MATE 4009 (Ordinary Differential Equations), or permission from Department Director Schedule: Tuesday & Thursday :00-3:15 PM Stefani 305 (SUBJECT TO CHANGE, please contact Dr. Rodríguez for more info) Textbooks: Dean, R.G. and Dalrymple, R. A., Water Wave Mechanics for Engineers and Scientists, World Scientific Publications, 005. Sorensen, R. M., Basic Coastal Engineering, 3rd Ed., Springer, NY, 006. US Army Corps of Engineers, Coastal Engineering Manual, 00. http://chl.erdc.usace.army.mil Overview: This course is an intensive examination of the topic of water waves, focused on the engineering applications of ocean wave dynamics. Students will analyze in detail the physical and mathematical fundamentals describing the behavior of ocean waves, and will lear n to use statistics and extreme wave analysis to develop design wave criteria. The course format will include lectures, field trips and other hands-on activities. Class topics will include: Linear wave theory fundamentals Wave transformation: refraction, diffraction, shoaling and wave breaking Wave statistics and wave spectra Tides and other sea level variations Design wave criteria Wave-induced currents Wave-structure interaction: wave loads, overtopping, reflection, wave runup Harbor hydrodynamics Other advanced topics will be determined based on student interest For more information please contact Dr. Rodríguez Abudo at: rodriguez.abudo@upr.edu Instructor: Sylvia Rodríguez-Abudo Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays 1:30-1:45 pm, Stefani 10 Pre-requisites: INGE 4010/4015 Fluid Mechanics, or permission from the Department Head Topics include: Wave dynamics; Tides, surges, tsunamis; Coastal morphodynamics; Coastal sediment transport; Beach engineering and nourishment; Inlet stabilization; among many others.
