Your coat of arms A coat of arms is a design painted on a shield in mediæval times. It was often to signify a particular family fighting in a battle and would pass down from father to son. Here s a few examples: Inverlochy Castle Ballyseede Castle Cloghan Castle Paint colours were more limited, and so only a few different colours could be used. The names for the colours came from Old French words: Gules - Bright Red Azure - Royal or Sky Blue Vert - Emerald Green Purpure - Royal Purple Sable - Black Or - Gold Argent - Silver 6 Commonly, coats of arms have supporters, which are usually animals who support the shield on each side. Common supporters are lions, bears, boars, eagles, horses, dragons, unicorns and griffins. 10 11 castle questions yummy recipe It s great staying in a castle, but it s even better when you know more about its history! Here are a few questions about the castle you re staying in, plus a few about castles in general... 1. Has a king or queen every lived or stayed in your castle? 2. How old is your castle? 3. How many knights or suits of armour can you find in your castle? 4. How many turrets does your castle have? 5. What is a moat and does your castle have one? 6. Why were castles built to live in? 1) To stay warm 2) To protect themselves and their people when attacked 3) Because they looked cool 4) All of the above 7. What were castles originally made out of? 1) Wood 2) Iron 3) Stone 4) Clay bricks 5) Marble Not only do we have castle hotels, but we also offer self-catering castles which can be taken exclusively by families. For these guests we provide a free cookery book with loads of recipes to use, along with some ones for kids to get messy and stuck in! Here s a sample... Pepper Boats Ingredients (Serves 2): 1 red or orange pepper 4 cherry tomatoes 1 tablespoon of olive oil 1 dessertspoon of pine nuts 4 basil leaves 30g of soft goat s cheese 1 - Pop the pepper by pushing down on the stalk until it is pushed inside. Then tear the pepper carefully to make two even-sized halves. These are your boats. Knock the back of the peppers to shake out any seeds. 2 - Chop the tomatoes up with scissors and add the oil and a pinch of pepper. Stir well. 3 - Add the pine nuts and finally tear up the basil leaves and add these. Give the mixture another good stir. falconry at bovey castle 4 - Divide the mixture down the middle of the bowl using the spoon and add half the filling to each pepper boat. Finally, crumble the goat s cheese on top of the tomato mixture. 5 - Place in the oven for 20-25 minutes or until the cheese topping is golden. Serve with some crusty french bread. Yummy!
