Program Highlights: Explore some of the most important parks and reserves in East Africa, including the Serengeti host at different times of the year to the Great Migration, the cyclical journey of 1.6 million herbivores on their quest for survival. Retreat to deluxe lodges and tented camps, each uniquely beautiful and authentic in décor. Participate in up to 12 game drives accompanied by an Orbridge Expedition Leader and expert naturalist guides aboard safari-outfitted Land Cruisers. Visit Oldupai Gorge, the "Cradle of Humanity"; and spend a full day at Ngorongoro Crater home to populations of lion, leopard, black rhino, hyena, wildebeest, buffalo, elephant, and zebra. Encounter local cultures on guided village, school, and plantation visits in Mto wa Mbu and a fishing village on the shore of Lake Victoria. Reserve an optional hot-air balloon safari over the Serengeti, followed by a champagne breakfast and game drive. What's included: 9 nights accommodations; 9 breakfasts, 9 lunches, 8 dinners; expert naturalist guides throughout; internal air and transportation; transfers for guests on suggested flights on arrival and departure days; all main program gratuities, as well as taxes, service charges, and park fees; and temporary membership in the Flying Doctors Service.

Day-by-Day Itinerary*: Please note: Locations selected for this safari promise excellent viewing of wildlife, whether migrating herds or resident populations. However, spotting specific wildlife cannot be guaranteed. Some activities are dependent on weather and seasonal conditions. Day 1: En route from U.S Day 2: Arrive in Arusha, Tanzania After an evening arrival to the Kilimanjaro Airport, you will be met by an Orbridge representative who will assist with the transfer to your hotel. Overnight: Lake Duluti Serena Hotel Days 3-4: Tarangire National Park After breakfast and a welcome briefing by your Orbridge Expedition Leader, depart Arusha to enjoy two days exploring Tarangire National Park with morning and afternoon game drives, plus a unique opportunity for a night game drive. Have your first look at Africa's natural beauty and the wonderful diversity of wildlife for which the park is known. Tarangire is exceptional for viewing herds of elephants and hundreds of colorful bird species. There is also time for delightful moments to relax and reflect, including a welcome cocktail at Kikoti Safari Camp, a bush lunch inside the park, and educational presentations by the camp fire. Overnight: Maisha Kikoti Safari Camp (B,L,D) Day 5: Mto wa Mbu / Ngorongoro Conservation Area Today your journey takes you to the Ngorongoro Highlands. Midday at Mto wa Mbu village, relax and refresh with a traditional lunch and a warm welcome from Maasai residents. Explore and enjoy the bustle of this trade center, get to know some of the many Tanzanian cultures represented here, and take a walk around a banana plantation. Our retreat for the next two nights, the friendly cottages of the Country Lodge in Karatu, is just 10 minutes from the Ngorongoro Crater. Overnight: The Country Lodge (B,L,D) Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater Your expedition continues to Ngorongoro Crater: the world's largest unbroken caldera and a legendary safari destination in Africa. The crater is a biosphere reserve often called a "Garden of Eden" for its wide range and everpresent abundance of wildlife attracted by the year-round water supply on the crater floor. A full day game drive here provides ample time for excellent viewing opportunities to look for leopards, lions and the best place in East Africa to spot the elusive black rhinoceros. Overnight: The Country Lodge (B,L,D) Days 7-8: Oldupai Gorge / Serengeti National Park - Seronera Valley Navigate around the crater s rim descending to Oldupai Gorge, one of the most important prehistoric archaeological sites on Earth. It was here in the 1950s that Louis and Mary Leakey first uncovered the fossilized teeth and skull of one of our earliest ancestors. After an interpretive presentation, we continue to the Serengeti, Tanzania's premier game park, experiencing its vastness and beauty for the first time. Home to the greatest concentration of large mammals on Earth, migratory herds of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle roam widely in search of green grass and water. Morning and afternoon drives each day bring us to optimal viewing points to see what nature reveals. Overnight: Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge (B,L,D) While in Tanzania, you can opt to take a once-in-a-lifetime hot air balloon safari. Guests choosing to reserve this excursion will enjoy a dawn ascent over the southern Serengeti. Experience incredible birds-eye views over the wildlife and vast landscape. Afterward, enjoy a champagne breakfast and a game drive before rejoining the group. (Note: This excursion must be purchased in advance to guarantee availability and is non-refundable inside 90 days to departure.)

Days 9-10: Western Serengeti / Grumeti / Lake Victoria Fishing Village Traveling west beyond the Seronera Valley, enter the western corridor of the Serengeti and the Grumeti River region. Morning and afternoon game drives each day afford plenty of opportunity to observe, explore, and learn about these reserves and their wild diversity of bird and mammal species. On the banks of Lake Victoria is a fishing village where you are introduced to the local way of life, visit a school, and participate in a guided walk. A memorable bush dinner our last night on safari is a chance to bid a fond farewell to the sights, sounds, and magic of the Serengeti. Overnight: Kirawira Luxury Tented Camp (B,L,D) Day 11: Serengeti / Arusha / Depart From Grumeti, take the short flight back to Arusha. On arrival, enjoy lunch and finish any last minute shopping for woodcarvings or art at the Cultural Heritage Center. Day rooms at the hotel provide comfort and downtime until your transfer to the airport this evening. Day Room: Lake Duluti Serena Hotel (B,L, light snack) Day 12: En route / Arrive U.S. B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner *Itinerary subject to change What s Included: 9 nights accommodations and a day room on day 11, all at deluxe lodges and tented camps, carefully selected to emphasize wildlife viewing and comfort 9 breakfasts, 9 lunches, and 8 dinners including a special farewell Serengeti bush dinner and a light buffet snack on departure day Expert naturalist guides throughout, including an Orbridge Expedition Leader Daily game drives in custom 4x4 Land Cruisers with roof hatch access and guaranteed window seating Coffee and tea with meals and bottled water while on game drives All transportation including internal air from Serengeti to Arusha on day 11 and transfers for guests on suggested flights on arrival and departure days All main program gratuities, as well as taxes, service charges, and park fees Temporary membership in Flying Doctors Service

This excursion is available for additional payment of $539 per person, and is nonrefundable inside 90 days to departure. If you wish to participate, please contact Orbridge, as reservations must be made in advance.

Your Guide(s): Tanzania / Insider, Interpreter, Naturalist, Host While in Tanzania, an Orbridge Expedition Leader will infuse your journey with an appreciation of its extraordinary wilderness, an uncanny ability to spot wildlife, a local s knowledge and pride of place, and a naturalist s ability to gather the beauty of all senses to your experience.

Room Amenities: King or twin beds, spacious furnished deck, mineral water, en suite bathroom with sundries and hair dryer, and complimentary Wi-Fi in main lodge areas. Subject to change. While specific accommodations are secured well in advance, it is sometimes necessary to substitute hotels and camps with as-good or better options.

Activity Level: Moderate This safari program requires an ability to walk safely over uneven and slippery ground without assistance, transport luggage a short distance, get in and out of a 4 x 4 Land Cruiser, and physically tolerate vehicle motion on sometimes bumpy Serengeti roads. Average elevation: 5,000 feet What Guests Are Saying: We really enjoyed the guides. They made an excellent team. They were extremely familiar with all of the birds, animals and plants. One was also an entertainer he kept us laughing throughout the trip. Both clearly loved what they were doing and were eager to share info with us. Again, they were always optimistic and cheerful. The vision and ability to sight game were amazing! We enjoyed how the program flowed. Starting in Tarangire each designation surpassed the previous in experience. Ending in Serengeti was a wonderful grand finale. David & Julie M., Chicago, IL Beautiful accommodations. Loved. Our guides were A++++. Excellent! They were so knowledgeable and made everything so much fun. We were really lucky to have them as our guides...everyone in our group felt the same way. Lauren P., Valley Village, CA Every day, my husband and I agreed that if what we saw and did that day was the whole tour, then we would be satisfied! It was truly a trip of a lifetime. Nancy K., Decatur, GA We enjoyed both the main program and extension! The gorilla trek was a wonderful experience and the genocide presentations were extremely poignant. The Tanzanian safari was every bit as great as we had hoped. - Steve C., De Soto, WI

Top notch guides. Knowledge of plants, animals, birds, tribes and nation's history. They were the highest quality guides we met. Stephen C., Manakin Sabot, VA Our accommodations were unique and most comfortable, the food was very tasty, and the service was much more than I anticipated. I felt special and pampered. Eleanor M., Rochester, NY There are probably not enough adjectives to describe all of the guides. They were personable, knowledgeable, funny, and made us feel like we mattered and we weren't just a job. Also, the gorilla experience surpassed everything I had imagined. Tricia B., Cashiers, NC We could not have had a better guide. So positive, patient, tolerant, knowledgeable, interesting, and worked really hard to make sure we all had a wonderful experience. Certainly has a passion and gift for his work. Many of the wonderful memories my husband and I have are because of him! Carol C., Watkinsville, GA The guides who took us out on game drives took the opportunity to get to know us and went out of their way to accommodate our every need. They worked tirelessly, answering any and all questions thoroughly, meeting every request graciously; often making extra stops if someone wanted to take photographs of something of particular interest to them. All went the extra mile to ensure our enjoyment of this fabulous adventure. Linda S., Pittsfield, MA The guides were wonderful leaders, full of information and willing to share. They were attentive to all our needs and made sure we felt welcome. They worked well with our other guides to find particular animals we were interested in and predict their movements so we could get the best view. Their mixture of knowledge and humor was appreciated. Furthermore, they were very skilled at finding different animals, even those that are well camouflaged! The hotels were wonderful. They had friendly staff and great food! I liked the variety of food and having the option to eat some typical American food as well as some local staples. Brooke V., Tulsa, OK

Optional Extension: RWANDA MOUNTAIN GORILLA TREK Search for the gorillas that traverse the Virunga Mountains for the heart-pounding thrill of observing these giants in their natural habitat. The intimate experience of coming close to these gentle giants as they interact, play and nestle into the forest foliage can be lifechanging and unforgettable. Itinerary*: Day 11: Serengeti / Kigali, Rwanda After our morning game drive and some leisure time at the lodge, take an internal flight to Kigali with a quick stopover in Mwanza for clearance. In Kigali after immigrations and customs formalities, meet your host for the transfer to the Kigali Serena Hotel for dinner and a restful night. Overnight: Kigali Serena Hotel (B, L from main program, D added for extension guests) Day 12: Kigali / Kinigi Morning sightseeing today includes a tour of the Genocide Museum. Enjoy lunch in Kigali before the drive to the Mountain Gorilla View Lodge where you can rest and prepare for tomorrow morning's trek. Overnight: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (B,L,D) Day 13: Volcanoes National Park / Gorilla Trek After an early breakfast we begin our gorilla trek. Mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is one of the most exciting natural history opportunities in all of Africa. To be so close to these amazing animals can truly be a life-changing event. Experienced national park guides will lead you through the thick forest in search of one of the habituated gorilla families that traverse the Virunga Mountains. Upon finding the group, we will have one hour with them to observe and capture remarkable photographs. Overnight: Mountain Gorilla View Lodge. (B,L,D) Day 14: Volcanoes National Park / Musanze Tour or Optional Gorilla Trek / Kigali / Depart for U.S. After an early breakfast, those joining the optional second gorilla trek will depart for Volcanoes National Park for one last look at these great primates.

The Karisoke Research Center was founded in 1967 by Dian Fossey and is the longest-running gorilla research site in the world. Guests not opting for the second trek will drive to nearby Musanze for a guided tour of the facility dedicated to the conservation of mountain gorillas and their habitat. While viewing the interactive exhibits including artifacts from Fossey s cabin, and a virtual model of the Virunga mountains, we ll learn about gorilla behavior and social structure, the biodiversity of the forest, and how the center works with local communities to foster awareness and protection of this endangered species. After, stroll through a local market in Musanze to experience the unique culture and crafts of Rwanda. Observe a weaving group while they create colorful and beautiful baskets and perhaps choose one to take home. Everyone will return to the lodge to refresh before lunch, followed by the drive back to Kigali where we have use of a day room at the Kigali Serena Hotel before the transfer to the airport for your departing flight. Day room: Kigali Serena Hotel (B,L, light snack) Day 15: En Route / Arrive U.S. Note: Trekking will involve walking and climbing hills in tropical forests on uneven, sometimes rocky, steep and/or slippery ground, at a moderate, unhurried pace. Park regulations state that the maximum time that can be spent with the gorillas is one hour. The time spent searching for the gorillas does not count as part of the hour. *Itinerary subject to change Activity Level: Moderate We expect that guests on this program can walk 1-2 miles up and down hills in tropical forests on uneven, sometimes rocky, steep and/or slippery, terrain. The forest can be humid and paths may have heavy vegetation. A degree of physical fitness is necessary as you may need to pull yourself up steep slopes by grasping onto branches or bushes, or even get a boost. Porters can be hired at Volcanoes National Park to assist you with trekking and to carry your equipment. Trekking can take anywhere from 1-5 hours, depending on how long it takes to find the gorillas. It is advisable to bring an energy bar and bottled water. Also keep in mind that you will experience varying altitudes, to which you may not be accustomed, from 5,100 feet in Kigali to 7,000-9,500 feet while gorilla trekking.

Accommodations: Kigali Serena Hotel While in Kigali, you will relax in style in the five-star Kigali Serena Hotel on one of the city's most charming boulevards. Relaxed yet elegant, the hotel's pan-african style, wide sundeck overlooking a large outdoor pool and lovely tropical gardens will be a peaceful retreat while you enjoy your time in Rwanda's capital city. Room Amenities: King or twin beds, air conditioning, flat-screen satellite TV, complimentary Wi-Fi, phone, safe, mini-bar, tea and coffee-making facilities, and en suite bathroom with sundries (shampoo, conditioner, and soap), and hair dryer. Mountain Gorilla View Lodge On the edge of Volcanoes National Park, the Mountain Gorilla View Lodge s location is an ideal base from which to trek the Virunga Mountains and its habituated groups of Mountain Gorillas. Its friendly staff and collection of individual cottages will make you feel at home, and its beautiful views will remind you of adventures in store for you. Each cottage has a fireplace (wood and charcoal or space heaters provided on request). Room Amenities: King or twin beds, sitting area and en suite bathroom with shower. Please note: accommodations are subject to change. What's Included: Airfare from the Serengeti to Kigali (KGL) Accommodations at Kigali Serena Hotel and Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (or similar) Meals, including 3 breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 3 dinners Transfers, all park fees, and one gorilla trek permit with the option to purchase a second permit for one additional trek A temporary membership in the Flying Doctors Service Please note: Group space may not be available within 90 days of departure.
