The itinerary includes the most extraordinary wildlife sites in East Africa with special focus on time in the famous Serengeti and visits to cultural groups whose lives integrate that vast but endangered wilderness. Each day we adventure out with guides on game drives, which are the heart of a safari- taking off at first light, hunting the animals, brunch picnics in the wild, returning to lunch and rest, then off at sunset, again searching for the perfect photographic image or just the memory of beautiful creatures living in untamed nature and in their unaltered habitats. Accommodations are at Ngare sero Mt Lodge where we will stay for two nights helping us adjust to time, explore this amazing historic lodge, glimpse local village life and practice some game watching! Ngare sero Lodge which was built in the early part of the 20 th century using local stone and timber. The lodge was originally the home for a German family who raised horses in Tanzania. The public rooms are warm and comfortable. The main living area has a walk in stone fireplace and a large veranda, offering splendid views of the surrounding countryside. Some mornings, the pines off to the left of the veranda frame views of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Guesthouses are arranged around a large grassy area decorated with mature plants and trees. The water system on the property provides clean spring water to the local villages. Day two Arusha National Park Our first game drive will introduce us to game watching with a visit to Arusha National Park, a forest wilderness that includes Mount Meru, a prominent volcano. The park is a river landscape created by Jekukumia River and the alkaline lake Momella with a rich variety of wildlife and is the perfect introduction to watching animals in the wild. The park gives us the opportunity to see herds of wildlife in a forest setting. Mountain, rivers and valleys force the animals closer. They gather in tighter herds than we ll se on the savannah. Arusha Park is the exclusive home to certain monkeys and birds. Day three to six Depart Ngare sero Lodge after breakfast and drive through Arusha to Tarangire National Park for game drive Overnight Tarangire Safari Lodge Tarangire Safari Lodge is an extraordinary permanent camp with a very luxurious lodge room located on edge of a plateau with a view of the Tarangire River below. The private cabins have the feel of a Victorian style safari tent and
are decorated with African fabrics. Each cabin has a large private bathroom. Logs and planks frame the outside of each guesthouse, floors are concrete and the interior is soft tent fabrics. The main lodge is a permanent structure and was built using woods and stone from the area. At sunset visitors may sip a cool drink and watch wildlife coming to the river for bathing and for their refreshments! The park and surrounding area is known for the thousands of elephants that live and migrate through the area. You will never forget the gentle giants that often wonder past our cabins! Full day game drives in Tarangire National Park Overnight Tarangire Safari Lodge Tarangire National Park is a unique ecosystem with flora not found in other areas of Tanzania. Game drives around Tarangire National Park follows river routes filled with exciting wildlife featuring more elephants than you can imagine. This is the place for elephants for centuries they have gathered in these foothills. This is also an important park for birds. Various breeds come to the river at different times of the day- some to bath and all to refresh with the fresh water of the Tarangire River. Baobob trees made famous by the book, The Little Prince, are found in this area. Tarangire National Park is covered with spaghetti like animal trails. These narrow, deeply grooved paths extend in all directions crossing each other. They are the trails of animals in search of water, food or safe places. Full day game drives in Tarangire National Park Overnight Tarangire Safari Lodge Depart Tarangire and drive further up the rift valley to the Ngorongoro Highlands and then around the crater wall to descend into the Serengeti National Park and Serengeti conservation area. Day seven to ten Overnights at Ndutu Safari Lodge Ndutu Safari Lodge is located near the entrance to the Serengeti National Park in the center of the Serengeti Conservation area within easy reach to the prime wildlife theaters of Northern Serengeti, the southern grass plains, the Seronera Valley and the kopjes. Ndutu Lodge is the classic safari lodge built in the 50 s to be home to wildlife photographers. The lodge dining room built from local stone opens to view the area above the river shore. The guest rooms are large comfortable bungalows. The lodge is located at the bend of the river that borders the Serengeti and provides water to the animals. The location is perfect
for access to the migrating herds and while in the conservation area, we are allowed to drive off the park roads. Ndutu is one of only two lodges that have been allowed the opportunity to be in this prize spot. Ndutu is still the home to professional photographers. The clientele is limited to a few tour groups. We have been taking safari travelers to Ndutu for nearly thirty years! The Serengeti National Park is a world Heritage site and one of the last remaining wildlife spectacles on earth. During this season the park is filled with vast herds of antelope, lines of wildebeest, prides of lions and the constant interaction of wildlife struggling to survive. The stark beauty and abundant wildlife of this enormous sanctuary has made its name synonymous with adventure. The vast savannah provides a breathtaking 360-degree view of the horizon. The Serengeti includes many areas with their own identities- like the Moru kopjes and the Maasai Mara but these are only small parts of this vast national park. To acquire a better appreciation of the Serengeti, we plan on spending time in a variety of different areas of the park. Some game drives will take us to follow the migration. This is birthing season and wildebeests, antelopes and zebras are dropping their young while migrating- this is simply spectacular and magical. We will spend days doing game drives in the morning and evening with excursions to a variety of areas within the Serengeti. On the second day of time in the Serengeti we have scheduled a day trip to the Kopjes area where special care is taken to protect a small herd of rhinoceros. Day 11 - last day for safari adventure and beginning of extension to visit Nianjema School All travelers will depart Ndutu for flight to Arusha, some for art and shopping and others to airport for extension to Nianjema School in Bagamoyo. Travelers not taking the extension - Those not taking the extension will fly to Arusha and spend the day shopping and visiting art galleries, curio shops and enjoy a special lunch at a facility for handicapped artists. Later you will be taken to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home. If you are on the KLM flight to Amsterdam, you ll depart at about 10 pm. Extension to Nianjema School- the flight from Ndutu will stop in Arusha and Nianjema travelers will transfer to a flight to Dar es Salaam - you will be picked up in Dar and driven to the coastal town of Bagamoyo for visit to Nianjema with two nights at Travelers Lodge.
Day 11- Extension Bagamoyo is one if the oldest towns in East Africa and visitors will be given the opportunity to tour the old city, visit an art school and see ruins from early churches and places used by early English explorers. Travelers Lodge is located on the beach and the school is only a few minutes away. The atmosphere is very different from the woodlands and savannah where the safari takes place. This is a tropical environment on the Indian Ocean. Along the drive to Bagamoyo you will see several sections of Indian Ocean beach as well as several towns and neighborhoods of varying economies. Day 12 - Nianjema School Full day visit time Nianjema School with varies activities planned by school officials. The school was started several years ago by a partnership of Americans and Tanzanians and is truly an amazing place where meeting the students and teachers is a reassuring and invigorating experience. They ask great questions! Day 13 - depart Bagamoyo for drive to Dar es Salaam and flight home. Travelers will be taken to the Dar airport for flight home. Your international flight should not charge more for arriving into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and leaving from Dar es Salaam International. Safari cost: Total costs of safari without extension is $6200. Total costs of safari with extension to Nianjema is $6800.
