Warminster Town Warminster(or Wereminster ) is situated near the Somerset border approximately 18 miles from the Roman spa town of Bath, 21 miles from the Cathedral City of Salisbury (home to a copy of the Magna Carta) and also Wilton - the ancient Anglo-Saxon capital of Wessex. Warminster lies at the edge of the vast Salisbury Plain. The town derived its name from the Minster church which was built in Saxon times within a loop of the river Were which can still be seen running through the town. Evidence of earlier settlements can be found nearby, in the form of seven hills: Cley,Arn,Cradle, Copheap, Battlesbury,Middle and Scratchbury, three of which are Iron Age hill forts. There are many fine Georgian buildings throughout the town and adjoining roads most of which were built from the towns wealth as a major wool and cornmarket. Wool produced on the Salisbury Plain would be graded and 7 sorted at neighbouring villages and then brought to market in Warminster.(The Woolstore Theatre in Codford is situated on the site of a woolstore). Warminster has five main suburban areas: Sambourne, Woodcock, Bugley, Boreham and Warminster Common. It is also home to the county s oldest independent school Warminster School (formerly Lord Weymouth s Grammar School). There are 7 primary schools serving the town and 1 large secondary school, Kingdown School. Warminster is very conveniently situated for easy access to the A36 trunk road which links Salisbury to Bath and also the A350 which runs from the M4 motorway down to the Shaftesbury and the south coast. There is a very good rail link using Brunel s Great Western railway which runs from London/Portsmouth through to Bristol & Cardiff. The Old Town Hall, High St: was built in 1832 and designed by Buckingham Palace architect Edward Blore in the style of Longleat house. It was previously a court house with a small jail. Lychgate War Memorial, Copheap: built by the R.A. & Old Comrades associations The Lake Pleasure Grounds, Weymouth St Tennis courts Refreshment kiosk Bandstand Boating lake Children s playground Paddling pool Skate/Skateboard park The lake is home to swans, moorhens and ducks. Smallbrook Meadows located at the bottom of the park, is a Wiltshire Wildlife Trust Nature Reserve, with a variety of wildlife, wild flowers & trees. Statue of Amy Flower by Colin Lambert, Cornmarket Mall: she travelled to Warminster corn market & played around the corn sacks in the 1870 s The Wall - main car park off Station Road: painted by an anonymous artist to celebrate the 50th anniversary of ' The Warminster Thing'.

Shopping & Eating Warminster town has a range of interesting shops selling a variety of products from gifts to fresh flowers and bicycles to household goods. It is a refreshing alternative to large scale shopping malls sometimes found in other towns. Within the centre itself are four major supermarkets and a retail park near Warminster s train station. There are also three small pedestrian shopping malls with a wide range of shops including a chemist, newsagents post office, jewellers and coffee shops. Various beauty and hairdressing salons and barbers are located 9 throughout the town and a market is held in the Central Car Park on Friday mornings. On the third Friday of every month a Farmer s Market is set up outside the Library in the Central Car Park. There are four major banks in the high street as well as several building societies, travel agents, estate agents and numerous public houses, inns, take-away food outlets, and restaurants. The popular and historic Dents Factory Shop is in Furnax Lane to the west of the town where there is also an industrial estate containing a wide and varied array of manufacturing and retail businesses. Town s retail parks with major supermarkets and retail outlets all sited with ample parking The town has numerous independent shops selling a variety of goods from clothes, flowers, toiletries, to bread/cakes and video games, Antique dealers and vintage shops, can be found on the western side of the town. The Surrounding Area Warminster sits on the edge of Salisbury Plain near the picturesque Wylye Valley, known for its pretty villages and rolling landscape. It is an excellent area for walking and cycling which includes The Imber Range Perimeter Path - the Wylye Valley section of the Wiltshire Cycleway. It is the perfect base to visit some of the West country's best known landmarks including the stone circle at Avebury, the world famous Stonehenge and visitor centre, Glastonbury and also the Roman Spa town of Bath. Just outside the town is Longleat Estate and Safari Park home to the Marquess of Bath and to the east is the city of Salisbury and the 13th century gothic cathedral boasting the tallest spire in England. Just outside Salisbury is the Iron Age hill fort of Old Sarum. To the south of Warminster lie the landscaped gardens of the National Trust s Stourhead and the town of Shaftesbury with the very steep Gold Hill. Warminster is an ideal base for exploring other nearby market towns such as Marlborough and Devizes which sit on the Kennet & Avon canal. This has an impressive 29 lock system now designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Also within easy reach is Westbury with its White Horse, carved into the chalk on a hillside overlooking the town. Two miles outside the town is Cley Hill, an Iron Age hill fort which once formed part of the Longleat estate but was entrusted to The National Trust by the 6th Marquess of Bath. From the top of this 'UFO hotspot' walkers are rewarded with a 360 degree view over the surrounding countryside of West Wiltshire and Somerset. 11 Many historic sites, buildings and country walks can be discovered around Warminster such as the famous White Horse near Westbury, Cley Hill and in the many pretty villages that surround the town. Found in the villages of Sutton Veny and Codford, are the Commonwealth War Graves of Australian servicemen, nurses and British soldiers who lost their lives during World War I. Large training camps and hospitals were placed around Warminster alongside entire trench systems which prepared troops for life at the front.

History Some Points of Interest The town is full of interesting places to see and visit with a history going back before the Doomsday Book. Its architecture spans more than seven centuries and the town has more than 350 listed buildings. At the top of High Street is the Chapel of St Lawrence which was purchased and given to the Town in 1575. You will hear the clock chiming the time but it has no clock face as there were buildings in front of the Chapel. Opposite is a row of shops that date back at least five hundred years. Between High Street and Market Place is the entrance to North Row one of the narrowest two-way streets you will find anywhere. A walk down North Row will lead you to cottages dated Warminster was first settled in the Saxon period but numerous earlier settlements have been found nearby. The town owes its prosperity to the growth of the wool and cloth industry and its corn market. Many buildings in the Market Place date back to when they were used as stores and warehouses by traders who came from miles around. As the town prospered, the Minster Church of Saint Denys was built in a grove sacred from pre-christian times. Roman Villas & Skeletons There are several Neolithic barrows nearby and the King Barrow on the eastern side of the town is 200 feet long and 15 feet wide. 3 skeletons were discovered there with one still wearing his iron sword. 3 more were discovered at Arn Hill when the barrows were excavated in the early 19th century by Sir Richard Colt Hoare. Battlesbury, an Iron Age fort covering 24 acres with ramparts 60 feet high, would have been almost impregnable on the south and east. In 1768 the ruins of 13 two Roman villas containing several rooms and beautiful mosaic pavements were unearthed in a large meadow near Bishopstrow. Civil War During the English Civil War (1642 1645) the town is thought to have changed hands between the Royalist and Parliamentary supporters at least four times. When James II came to the throne in 1685, the local gentry and the Wiltshire Militia supported him against the Duke of Monmouth. Around 1610 a bell foundry in Warminster cast bells for churches in the towns of Chippenham, Frome and neighbouring counties. During WWI soldiers from Australia, New Zealand and Canada were camped nearby to train in readiness for life in the trenches. Imber village lying north east of Warminster was taken over in preparation for D-Day. Today it is still in the hands of the Ministry of Defence and public access is granted on a number of days each year. (Details: at www.imbervillage.co.uk) 1732, a Baptist Church built in 1810 and Dewey House, which housed the offices of the Town Council and is now our Foodbank. To the west of the town is Church Street with a varied collection of impressive buildings forming part of Warminster School, an independent boarding school. At the end of Church Street is the Minster Church of St Denys. A Church is believed to have stood here from Saxon times, the present building is largely late Victorian. In Market Place you will see a number of old coaching Inns, and behind the Inns were the yards for stables and horses. Wherever you look in Warminster Town Centre, you will see varied and interesting architecture. Enjoy looking around! Colin Taylor - Warminster Museum & History Society

A350 Warminster s 7 Hills Arn Hill Down down of the people of Erna (692ft, 211m) Arn Hill has Neolithic and Bronze Age burial mounds. Some were destroyed in 1911/12 to make way for part of the West Wiltshire Golf Course which now covers the summit. Artefacts found here are in the Wiltshire Museum in Devizes. There are good views from the summit across to Cley Hill and there also the remains of a lime kiln, once used to heat chalk for use in building mortar and for agriculture. Battlesbury Hill (682ft, 208m) Also called Prattelsbury and Patelsberye and in 1754 as Battlesbury Castle, is one of the finest examples of an Iron Age Hill Fort in England. Artefacts found inside the fort indicate that it was built some time after Cley and Scratchbury. They included Iron Age pottery, metalwork and animal bones, and an urn containing 36 Roman coins plus an 11th century sword. Cley Hill (800ft, 244m) Is actually made from chalk and was once part of the Longleat Estate but given to the National Trust by Lord Bath in 1952. It s an Iron Age Hill Fort with two Bronze Age bowl barrows on the summit. The hill s irregular outline has been created by medieval quarrying. It is the highest of the seven hills and views from the top can be spectacular. Copheap (606ft,185m) In 1773 it was known as Cop Head Hill. Cop means the top or a hill and is the nearest hill to the town centre. A Neolithic burial mound on the summit was opened in October 1809 and human remains were found. The south face of Copheap was given to the town as a War Memorial in 1947 and there is a lych-gate with seats and an inscription. Cradle Hill (653ft, 199m) Became famous in the early 1960 s when it was linked with UFO stories. Numerous sightings of strange objects overhead as well as alarming unexplained noises caused local alarm. The mysterious activities have been linked to the appearance of crop circles in the area. Middle Hill (587ft, 179m) Also known as Star Hill. It features in some records of UFO watching activities. The lowest of the seven hills it is a Bronze Age bowl barrow. To the south is the site of the deserted medieval village of Middleton and it has good examples of strip lynchets associated with this. Scratchbury Hill (646ft, 97m) Or formerly know as Scrathburie, Scratch being an old West Country word for the Devil. It has six round barrows all of which have been opened. Artefacts found are in Salisbury and South Wilts Museums. World War I poet Siegfried Sassoon who lived nearby at Heytesbury, wrote a poem about riding over Scratchbury. The philosophy of Forest School is to inspire individuals through positive outdoor experiences. Our sessions encourage children to explore freely, using their own initiative as they solve problems and co-operate with others. Children use full sized tools to bring their own ideas to life. They play, learn boundaries of behaviour - both physical and social - grow in confidence and self-esteem and become self motivated. Ryan (aged 9 at the time) described Forest School as entering a whole new world... where children are the creators." This sums up the ethos of Copse and Loppers. Meanwhile, Sammy, who didn't initially want to stay at Saturday Club, ended the session by declaring, This is the best day ever!" Children who struggle in a classroom environment often succeed in the less formal surroundings of Forest School. They can become leaders, where once they struggled to even follow. Those who may bounce off the walls' at home, cannot do so once those walls are removed. All children need the opportunity to be children', to run around, jump in puddles and play in the mud. Copse and Loppers run sessions in the beautiful surroundings of Woodcroft Wood, situated between Bishopstrow and Sutton Veny. 23 LIVE presents MUSIC INSPIRE O F W A R M I N S T E R 2017 Inspire was the brainchild of Pete Bartley and Doug Halls, who approached the Town Council with their idea to put on an annual live music event in the park to showcase local talent and more specifically to encourage young people to take up a musical instrument. The Town Council has generously funded Inspire since its inception in 2013 and Admin Officer Veronica Mills is a member of the organising committee. Warminster has a very active live music scene, but since most of the venues are pubs young people aren t able to attend. Doug and Pete wanted to put on a daytime family event where parents could bring their children and enjoy a family day out listening to the music. They also wanted to include free workshops where people could try out a variety of musical instruments if just one person was inspired to take up an instrument the event would have succeeded in its mission. Inspire initially took place on a Sunday afternoon at the beginning of the school summer holidays, but in 2016 the committee decided to move it to the last weekend of the summer term so that students from Kingdown could be involved. This proved a great success, with two Kingdown student bands getting a wonderful opportunity to perform in front of a mixed aged audience who were clearly impressed by their skills and confidence. Although Doug sadly had to stand down from Inspire because of other commitments, the team has two new members in Mike Heaton and Tom Hiscocks who bring lots of experience and contacts to help keep the event going. Inspire was held on a Saturday last year but by popular demand it s being moved back to a Sunday and so will take place on 16th July from 1pm until 7pm. There promises to be a great line up of young local talent and perhaps some more mature artists to keep the balance so let s keep our fingers crossed for another sunny day and get your picnic blankets at the ready! 31 ZEN Shotokan Karate club ZEN Shotokan Karate has been running in the area for a few years and is an independent club with over 50 students and 5 training locations. A lot of modern Martial Arts clubs have a watered down version which has lost some of the intensity and applications from the original, Karate as a whole has gained a bad name and is often seen as a kids fun club that can have lots of expensive gradings. Fortunately there are still some great clubs and instructors out there, we either travel or ask them to visit our Dojo to share the knowledge and skills, these are then passed on to our students. Karate can be many things to many people, from a casual hobby to attending competitions, a lot of the time it is just a vehicle to help coach people to hone their skills and gain confidence. Our training consists of classical/traditional punching, blocking and kicking techniques, Kata" which are set routines and packed with loads of self defence techniques, then mix these up with partner work so you can test and train them so you can rely on them if needed. We also add key principles like using the hips and striking pressure points = these are the things that make it an effective Martial Art. A good club will have several things in place like DBS, Safeguarding & 1st Aid training, Full Instructor Insurance and a minimum of a Level 2 Coaching qualification, ours are done via 1st4Sport which is a UKCC accredited company, they are specialised with Disability Karate. We currently have 2 SEN groups started and are looking to bring adapted Karate to schools in the area both SEN and mainstream schools a where Karate is made to fit the student's abilities and help to empower them to achieve anything they want to. So why should you try Karate? You will gain confidence, agility, strength and be able to concentrate more plus many other benefits. You will lose weight, stress and negativity. It s a friendly learning atmosphere where you will learn the art of Karate and excellent Self Defence training, awareness and how to de-escalate a problem. If you are interested then look at our website to find our training locations and get in touch or just turn up at any session. www.2enshotokankarate.co.uk

33 Warminster Rugby Club Is a non-profit making, volunteer run organisation, devoted to providing a service for the local community. Its purpose is to enable participation in rugby for ages 5 to 92, all genders and any ability. It currently runs two senior men s teams, playing league rugby in the Dorset & Wilts leagues. These train on a Wednesday evening currently, 7pm-8pm and play matches on Saturday afternoon. It also currently runs kids age groups from 6-16, including an exciting Girls Development Squad, which all train and play matches on Sunday morning from 10.30am-12noon. Two distinct components with the same objective. Rugby, inclusive for all, played by as many people as possible in a learning, but fun environment. There are also opportunities to join our Club as part of our highly committed crew of volunteers involved in delivering the rugby activity (coaches, who are always in high demand), or in running the Club (committee). All of our coaches are developed to become qualified at the appropriate level to the rugby they are teaching. All our volunteers are highly motivated and geared towards making the Club successful. The Club proactively advocates rugby s core values, of Enjoyment, Respect, Teamwork, Discipline and Sportsmanship, placing particular emphasis on Enjoyment. Throughout the Club, the ethos is everyone gets a game and winning, whilst a great facilitator to enjoying taking part, isn t as important as playing rugby being enjoyable. Exciting times are-ahead for all in 2017, as the Club looks to have more playing pitches and permanent floodlighting for training and matches, both of which will make rugby more sustainable. For any local businesses who want to support us, we have ample marketing opportunities we can give by way of sponsorship. We already receive fantastic sponsorship support from Lyons Seafoods and RACS Group, but there are still areas left for other businesses to be involved in. www.warminsterrfc.com

VV & Thinking of selling your car? Not happy with dealer trade-in values? At Vale and Valley Cars we specialise in sourcing and supplying cars for under 3000. We work on the basis that lower cost cars need not be any less reliable than some of the more expensive options available. We mainly source our cars from Main Dealers that have taken in cars as part exchanges on newer models. We drive the cars we source and work closely with a selection of local garages to check and prepare the cars for sale. This helps us to be as certain as we can that the cars we sell will be reliable and that you can buy from us with confidence. We also have a selection of classic and what we call retro cars covering the last 50 years of motoring. Our passion is cars and we hope you will enjoy dealing with our family run business.
