VOLUME 7, ISSUE 2 JANUARY 2016 SPECIAL POINTS OF INTEREST: As can be seen from the graph below the GOLD PRICE rose from a low of $1442.00 to a high of $1502.00 and then went on a downhill slide back to its starting point. The Australian dollar is stable at $.72266. Gold & Relics Gold Prospecting Adventure the only accredited gold prospecting tour operator in Australia Congratulations to us! Why? For receiving our Australian Tourism Accreditation. Gold & Relics is the only accredited Gold Prospecting Tour Operator in Australia! This has entailed a massive amount of work ensuring that all work plans, emergency, safety and contingency plans have been drawn up as well as having all of our permits in place (and there are so many!). It has been a long, hard slog so we are very excited to celebrate this award. Accreditation provides an assurance that businesses commit to professionalism. An accredited tour operator has met specific criteria ensuring they are committed to exceeding expectations with great customer service and the highest standards of business practice including Quality, Reliability, Professionalism, Environmental Practices and Adherence to a Code of Ethics. The tick instils confidence in those who want to know that their tour operator is following all the correct business and safety procedures. Leanne, Customer Services Manager, says of the process It was a long journey as we studied every aspect of the business and remodelled the business processes. We are now operating in a manner that is proven to be best practice. Other accredited businesses in the Goldfields include Sovereign Hill, Central Deborah Gold Mine, and in Melbourne- Luna Park, Eureka Skydeck and Melbourne Star. Goldfields Central Prospecting Branch T he next meeting will be held on Wednesday 17th February at the Maryborough Highland Society, 35 High St, Maryborough at 6.00pm for a meal and 7.00pm for the meeting. All Welcome

P AGE 2 TESTING 1...2.3. Darren has been conducting testing on the Coiltek 18 Mono Elite Coil lately. He took it out one day last week however, as it was 37C at 10.30am he packed it in pretty quickly. This coil ran very smoothly even when nudging rocks and trees and it would be a good coil to have in the kit. It was a pleasure to use however it does weigh 1230 grams, which is due to its larger size. However, this does mean that it is a bit heavier than a lot of other coils. Big coils are good for depth and ground coverage if you are detecting in an open area. But, they are not so good in the bush as they are more difficult to manoeuvre and they are also not so good for prospectors with bad backs. Darren found a 1.71 gram gold nugget within 2 hours of detecting which isn't bad going. The verdict? A big thumbs up. 18 Coiltek Mono Elite Coil RACV G OLDFIELDS R ESORT AT C RESWICK The RACV has taken over the Novotel Forest Resort and are making the most of the region that the Resort is situated in namely the Goldfields. Darren introduced Stephen Roberts, the Resort Manager to a nice chunk of gold since the takeover. The RACV own and operate eight resorts throughout Australia being Goldfields, Torquay, Cape Schanck, Hobart, Noosa, Cobram, Inverloch and the Gold Coast. Mr. Jordan, Managing Director and CEO of RACV stated that the RACV bought the Resort with a long term view-that they are here to stay. It is thought that the properties within the Resort will now boom as liquidation issues have been solved. We wish the new RACV Goldfields Resort all the best for the future. Darren with Stephen Roberts, Manager, RACV Goldfields Resort and a lovely chunk of gold.

PAGE 3 PMAV CENTRAL BRANCH CHRISTMAS PARTY CARMENS TUNNEL, MALDON Darren (right) giving a speech near the end of the evening. Carman s Tunnel is a small mine in Carman s Gully on the far side of Mount Tarrangower just outside Maldon. From the outside it is a large black hole at the foot of a hillside covered with a smattering of grey box eucalypts. It is a still, quiet place with little to show that this was one of Maldon s greatest follys. The Great International Quartz Mining Company was formed with the special purpose of exploring the innards of the hillside with an east-west tunnel, working on the theory that gold-bearing reefs ran north-south in volcanic country. It took them from November 1882 till December 1884 to carve out a tunnel nearly about 600 metres long. Fifty-one shareholders put up 24,000 pounds to finance the venture which, in the end, only yielded 33 ounces of gold, says Ken Fothergill, a member of the Carmans Tunnel Management Committee and one of the guides who takes tours of the tunnel. It was one of the great financial disasters of the Maldon goldfield. Ray Stevenson (below with the fluro vest, left hand picture) was our guide for the evening and what a great storyteller and guide he was. Ray entertained us with stories of what mining in the 1800s would have been like. We went on an underground tour of Carmens Tunnel and then had a BBQ to end the evening off. It was great to see Roy Hockley (below right with wife Val) back on his feet after a workplace accident that left him with serious injuries. It was a good turnout for the end of the year break and when the Branch resumes the meetings will be held at the Maryborough Highland Society under the direction of Bill Schultz (below right in the middle picture).
