Technical Committee TC24 - Integrity of Railway Structures Workshop on: Improving Lifetime and NDT On 30th March 2012, it will be held a TC24 Workshop, hosted at Politecnico di Milano - Department of Mech. Engineering (PoliMi), Via La Masa 1, Milan, Italy. The main topic of the meeting is to present the results of a PoliMi s project named MARAXIL ( Manufacturing Railway Axles with Improved Lifetime ) funded by Regione Lombardia. Within this project, developed in cooperation with IWM-Freiburg (Dr. M. Luke) and LucchiniRS - Lovere, the research has addressed the improvements in propagation lifetime induced by cold rolling. In particular, the results will be presented in terms of: i) a joint crack propagation database on A4T steel; ii) FE simulation of the cold rolling process and comparison with residual stress measurements; iii) estimation of improved propagation lifetime and comparison with full-scale experiments. The presentation of MARAXIL results will also be the opportunity for the railway structural integrity community to meet up again after the previous successful TC24 meetings held in Berlin (October 2010) and London (March 2011) and to discuss the advance in other on-going cooperative projects (WOLAXIM, EURAXLES, SUSTRAIL). The agenda of the workshop is: 8.30 Registration 8.50 Welcome (S. Beretta) 9.00 - Consolidation of a material database for axle crack growth calculations (M. Luke and D. Regazzi, IWM & PoliMI); 9.30 - Effect of rolling onto axle life prediction (M. Carboni et al., PoliMi and IWM); 10.00 - New detection methods for axle corrosion (J. Rudlin and A. Raude, TWI); 10.30 - Early phase of corrosion-fatigue damage in A1N (S. Beretta & A. Lo Conte, PoliMi); 11.00 - Vibration transmission due to a rail discontinuity causing excessive wear and surface waviness in subway rails (H:P. Rossmanith, TU Wien); 11.30 Break, food and beverages 12.00 - Some aspects of safe-life and damage tolerant design of railway axles (U. Zerbst, BAM); 12.30 - A comparison of SIF calculations for an axle (M. Sander, Rostock Univ.); 13.00 - POD and definition of a new calibration sample for axles (PoliMi, LucchiniRS and Gilardoni); 13.30 - Discussion upon the definition of axle fatigue limits and Kf factor (S. Cervello, LucchiniRS); 14.00 - updates about the on-going cooperative projects (Euraxles, WOLAXIM, SUSTRAIL and others); 14.30 closure and visit to MECC@POLIMI Labs
Venue The meeting will be held at: Politecnico di Milano, Dipartimento di Meccanica, Via la Masa 1, 20156 MILANO Italy The Dept. of Mechanical Engineering can be reached as follows. 1) Reaching the campus from Malpensa Airport: Take any train going to Milano. There are trains going to Cadorna (Malpensa Express), to Milano Centrale (main railway station) and to other destinations south of Milano, but passing through Milano. For departure times refer to the web page http://www.ferrovienord.it/webmxp/index.html. The travel time is about 35-40 minutes. You can buy tickets in the ticket office at the Malpensa railway station, or directly on the train (with a small extra fee). Get out of the train at stop MILANO-BOVISA, please note that this is NOT the last stop of the train. Out of the station, turn right, walk down the stairs, then turn left on Via private Mariani and walk down this street 40-50m. At the crossing, turn right in Via La Masa and enter the building you will see in front of you ( Sesini building ). Travelling by taxi from Malpensa will not speed your travel (unless in late evening hours), and will be much more expensive. Sesini building Follow the red path from the railway station to Sesini building (total distance 80-100m) 2) Reaching the campus from Linate and Orio al Serio airports: The only relatively fast way to reach our campus from Linate is to take a taxi. The transfer time will be 45 to 60 min depending on traffic conditions. If you want to use public transportation, take the bus to Milano Centrale then follow instructions at point 3. If you are arriving in Orio al Serio airport, take the bus to Milano Centrale then follow instructions at point 3. Allow at least 1h30 for your transfer. A taxi will be faster but quite expensive. 3) Reaching the campus from downtown Milano and Milano Centrale railway station: The campus can be easily reached from downtown Milano by taxi or public transportation. If you take a taxi, be aware that this is not the only Politecnico campus in Milano, so please specify well the address to the driver, because a confusion may happen with another campus
nearby. If you use public transportation, use the R line (called passante ferroviario ), that is the line drawn in blue colour in the following map. From the Milano Centrale railway station, you can either walk to the R line stop REPUBBLICA (5-10 min) or take the metro, green line, to Garibaldi, then change to R line. When you get to the R line, take any train with destination SARONNO / BOVISA to the station BOVISA FNM. Furthermore, all trains from Milano Centrale to Malpensa are stopping in BOVISA FNM, but there are only two trains an hour. From BOVISA station, follow instructions at point 1) to reach Sesini building.
Map of Milano underground, including R line (passante ferroviario) see also http://www.atm-mi.it/en/ 4) Reaching the campus from the Sunflower Hotel: The walking distance is approximately 15 minutes (see the map for the detailed path). Reach the Milano Bovisa Politecnico train station along Via Colico. At Bovisa train station, follow instructions at point 1) to reach Sesini building. A taxi will take about 15 minutes and will be more expensive. SUNFLOWER Hotel Accommodation A number of rooms have been pre-booked at Sunflower Hotel, which is in walking distance to Workshop venue, at a discount rate.
