Thelaststretchofthetrail provides a beautiful view of the Mackinac Bridge and pass directly by the Mill Creek Historic State Park. According to Dawn Edwards, the Executive Director of the Mackinaw City Chamber of Commerce, stepping off the trail in Mackinaw City is like walking straight into history. Mackinaw City is a brand of living history and making history, said Edwards. The Straits of Mackinac is home to 22 lighthouses, some historic and others still currently operating and protecting sailors from harm. The Mackinac Bridge is surrounded by two of Michigan s Great Lakes, Lake

Michigan and Lake Huron, and provides a link to the Upper Peninsula. Mackinaw City also contains an abundance of restaurants, shopping outlets and historical activities such as the United States Coast Guard Museum and Fort Michilimackinac. Ambitious cyclers may choose to take a ferry over to Mackinac Island and enjoy the freedom of vehicle-free roadways by biking, walking or taking a horse drawn carriage ride. Four blocks of shops are located on Central Avenue and the outdoor Mackinaw Crossings mall provides for the perfect shopping retreat. Edwards often observes young couples who ride their bikes along the trail to Mackinaw City and stop to enjoy a treat of ice cream or fudge. She feels the trail enables users to ride and enjoy the beauty, while also providing additional recreational activities and lodging in local communities along the way. Each area along the trail is a personal treasure to its surrounding community, she said. A Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) roadside park provides toilet facilities and lake access along the trail. Parking is available at the Mackinaw City Trailhead located on Mackinaw Crossings Drive. For more information visit www.mackinawcity.com.
