Topics Reasons to talk to Flight Information Airspaces why ATC needs them HX Airspaces TMZ and Monitoring Codes in Germany How FIC handles VFR requests to cross airspaces C/D Use of Transponders and the benefit for all airspace users Questions 3

Geneva and Zurich Information West of CTA Boundary: Geneva Information 126,350 English and French East of CTA Boundary: Zurich Information 124,7 English and German 4

FIC Flight Information Centre 5

FIC Flight Information Centre Records all relevant data on flight progress strip Issues local QNH and next reporting point, allocates Transpondercode if needed HBNCB AC11 1027 GR, Biel LSZF LSGG Olten 1023 5,5 4250 6

FIC Flight Information Centre Flight plan data Time, place and altitude, useful in case of SAR HBNCB AC11 1027 GR, Biel LSZF LSGG Olten 1023 5,5 4250 Departure time, DEP/ARR Message on request ARR Message possible if field in sight, but: closed FPL means waiving overdue monitoring/sar Routing 7

Reasons to talk to Flight Information Service Actual QNH Information and advice about airspaces Information about hazards such as: Anti Hail Rocket Firing, Shooting Areas, P/R/D-Areas, Parachute Jumping, Glider Zones etc. Flightplan Messages DEP/ARR, or new ETA due to wind, rerouting etc. -> avoid overdue Recording of flight route and intentions in case of SAR Traffic information as far as practicable, depending on general traffic volume, terrain, transponder FIC has no conflict alert tool Last but not least: to practice the use of radio and interaction with ATS student pilots are welcome! 8

How FIC works with aircraft Route Where is the next hotspot (airspace) -> reporting point before Handover point Any hazards on the route? -> inform the pilot Altitude Current altitude ok? -> restrictions on the further route? Maximum altitude if applicable Scanning of traffic in regards of position/altitude and other traffic On a CAVOK day there are hundreds of VFR targets on the screen 14

VFR Crossing how FIC coordinates a request HBNCB, request to cross TMA direct to WIL VOR at FL85 15

VFR Crossing how FIC coordinates a request HBNCB, request to cross TMA direct to WIL VOR at FL85 Allocate specific transpondercode Call the relevant sectors (up to 5 sectors depending on route) FIC: «north of EDNY, squawk 4250 at FL 85, VFR request to cross direct to WIL VOR» CAP: «radar contact, approved at FL80 direct to WIL, send it to 135,225» or «negative due to outbound traffic» FIC relays the clearance to the pilot or informs the pilot if the crossing is not approved A request is denied by the sector if the amount of IFR traffic could not be handled safe and efficient due to a blocked level 16

How ATC works with aircraft Safety: separate aircraft by 5nm or 1000ft Route specific route to be flown (procedure, SID/STAR, airways, direct to) heading (vectoring) holding segregated area for an aircraft (testflight) Altitude Specific altitude Maximum or minimum altitude (level block) Speed Adjust speed 17

Arrival and Departure Routes within TMA LSZH 18

One day of traffic at Zurich 19

Airspace: protection of procedures and flight paths In a busy airspace, ATC needs aircraft to fly precisely as instructed in order to keep traffic safe and expeditious. There is no room for avoiding actions, therefore, the flightpath needs to be clear of unknown traffic. 20

What is the meaning of HX? HX = No specific working hours / keine bestimmten Betriebszeiten Can be activated or deactivated anytime 24

HX airspace not active 25

HX airspace - active 26

HX airspace - status? Status can be checked on designated frequency 27

HX Status example Emmen/Buochs/Alpnach Statuscheck on these TWR frequencies is not possible, there is no longer a tape with a broadcast if not active, the frequency is reserved for TWR or blind transmissions Status Info Frequency 134.125 FIC Zurich is informed about Emmen FIC Zurich can check Alpnach and Buochs by phone (takes some time) Status unclear? Do not enter! 28

HX airspaces HX airspaces can be activated at any time Status can be checked on designated frequency ZH/GE Information can provide you with the correct frequency to check the status or, for some airspaces, with the information about the status If the status is unclear, consider the airspace active While crossing a HX airspace, keep on monitoring the frequency, where you checked the status, just in case the status changes while you are crossing! 29

What to do in case of Airspace Infringement? Contact ATC immediately, if frequency unclear: ZH/GE Information See and avoid: look out for traffic Transponder switched on in ALT mode? After landing file a report: aviationreporting.eu 30

Summary: Always switch on your Transpoder on ALT mode Use standard phraseology to avoid misunderstanding and to keep transmissions short Use the actual QNH HX airspaces: never assume If unsure about anything ask! FIC is your support! 31
