Newsletter January 2009 President s Message We want to elect a new North Central Director at this meeting Don Ladner, but we must have Cruiser, NDSRA members present to accomplish this. Please plan on attending if you can. Also, vote for your favorite pick of the year. Ladner s 57 Chevy is the pick we hope will win. Your vote can surely help! Well, Happy Holidays to everyone! It s been a very whirlwind, interesting year for our family and it seems 2008 just sped by! I m going to miss hearing Richard Marshall say, Mr. President, George Masters, or Mr. Vice President, to Kurt Smith and Jerry Black. This is my President, he would say. These are my Vice Presidents. Sadly, Richard, passed away a few weeks ago he made us feel like we were his hero s. He always made me feel good about the job I was doing and I m going to miss him. I m also going to miss Pat Schriock Jerry Schriock s wife who died in Phoenix in an automobile accident, also a few weeks ago. Both Richard and Pat were lifetime members of the Dakota Cruisers and contributed a lot to the club. Pat always brought something special to our pot luck, Wednesday night cruises and, by golly, I m going to miss those special dishes, too. Godspeed to both of these good people. I want to say, Thanks, to all the outgoing officers and Board members who served so well in their respective positions. Keryl Lesmann, club Secretary for the last number of years, did an outstandintg job. And, of course, there s Ken Amundson and Dave Alberts whose collective knowledge and expertise were used throughout their tenure. They aren t going anywhere, though! The monthly meeting will be the first Wednesday in 2009, at 7:30 pm at the Vegas Motel. That s January 7 th! Then, on the 10 th of January is the NDSRA annual meeting in Bismarck. We usually go to this meeting in force. Then on the 17 th of January, around 2:30, we will be boarding the bus at the Sleep Inn for the annual Dinner and A Movie, event. Of course the big feature of this event is the garage tour. Dave Alberts and Kurt Smith are heading up this event. There should be 5 garages and then the wrap-up meal and a movie. Since I ve declared this 15 th anniversary year as, The Year of Safety for the Club, we ll be doing our first NSRA (National Street Rod Association), Safety Inspection at one of the garage stops. We ll be going over the criteria for receiving the Safety sticker for 2009, for this particular car, and all of the others to be inspected. The guidelines are pretty simple, yet stringent for getting the Safety Approved sticker for your car. So, I hope you will inundate us with safety inspection requests throughout the year. I ve asked Kurt Smith and Tom Carson to head-up this safety team. Should be very interesting for us all! Then, stay tuned to the calendar for the upcoming year. The car shows start in January with the Jamestown Car Show, then Minot s NODAK Race Club s, Wild About Wheels, car show and swap-meet at the end of February and so on, and so on. Well, enough for now. Let s get things started this year by seeing you at the January meeting. If you haven t attended the Cruisers meeting in a long time, well, I m personally inviting you to come out the evening of January 7 th, to the Vegas. The challenge is on! Happy New Year! George
Rick and fellow Cruisers Don Tucker, Gary Volk and Mike Enslin For the past few months, Rick Marshall and I had planned to spotlight his story in the Cruiser Newsletter. But, something always seemed to come up, causing him to postpone until next month. Unfortunately, next month never came as Rick suffered a fatal heart attack at his home on November 30th. In the past, I d been intrigued with some of the stories Rick shared with me about his life. So, I turned to Rick s sister Barbara Moe, of Washburn, ND, to finally help write the story. It s with great pleasure that we honor lifetime Dakota Cruiser, Richard James Marshall, in the Member Spotlight for January 2009. Rick was born on July 28, 1952 in Duluth, MN. He was the oldest of 7 children, having 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Barbara recalls that cars were always his hobby starting with his little army peddle car with a star on it. His first real car was a Chevy Impala that he bought himself. He then recruited the neighborhood boys to help him fix it up so it would run. Barbara said, After school, there was always a bunch of boys working with Rick on his car. Growing up, Rick was a Boy Scout all the way through high school. After graduating in 1971, he joined the Marines, serving in Viet Nam and Okinawa before being sent to California. Then at age 23, tragedy struck. While home on leave, Rick was driving from Wisconsin to Duluth when he hit a bridge abutment. Barely surviving the crash, he suffered a broken neck, broken arm and broken leg. After a long rehabilitation, he was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps. You might have noticed stiffness in his neck and slightly hesitant speech both, Rick said, were the result of the accident. Rick chose Minot as his new home because it offered a military base and an affordable cost of living. He eventually bought a home in Surrey, continuing as an active Dakota Cruiser member. Rick lived with his beloved calico cat, Roxie. After Rick s death, Barbara tried to find Roxie a new home but 200 cats were already on the waiting list at the shelter. Then, Roehrich Hardware, in Washburn, agreed to give Roxie a new home in exchange for her mouse-catching skills. A happy ending that would ve pleased Rick. Rick with his 52 Chevy at the 2008 Cruise to Kenmare Rick at a Friday garage lunch with Andy Thurston and Nick Hemmesch Rick takes a pizza break while helping out at the Motor Magic Classic Car Auction, Labor Day weekend Rick feels right at home visiting Stan Saylor Rick never married. He was 56 years old. Goodbye Rick, we ll all miss you very much. In Memory Sadly, we also lost Pat Schriock in December after an auto accident in Arizona. Pat and her husband, Jerry, divided their time between homes in Minot and Fountain Hills, Arizona. Pat was raised in Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, later migrating to Florida. As fate would have it, she traveled with friends to Palm Springs, CA, on a motor home excursion where she met Jerry, who had also joined the tour. Pat and Jerry were married for 13 years, enjoying their shared pleasure of travel. In addition to Jerry, Pat is survived by her three children, Debbie, Donna and Joe; eight grandchildren; as well as many friends and relatives. Jerry and Pat are lifetime Cruiser members. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Pat and Jerry frequently went to Sturgis rallies with friends 2
