We talked about and honored our founders and marveled about how far the Museum has come in just 25 years. Now it's time to talk about the future and where we'll be at the end of the NEXT twenty five years. Your Board of Directors is working hard to convince the City of Paso Robles that we are the premier tourist destination in the area, and that our future should include expansion of our facility to the ten+ acres adjacent to our current location. Your Board envisions five more hangar style buildings where aircraft can be displayed indoors, perhaps by era, where we can expand our restoration capabilities, and where we can have a convention style facility capable of handling as many as 300 to 400 people at a time. Think we are dreaming beyond our ability to grow? I wonder how those 42 founders felt 25 years ago with one building, a couple of planes and their own vision of what this museum should be. But how we grow is really up to you, the members. If we are really going to take the next step forward, it is going to take two things on a constant basis - money and volunteers. We have done well in the past with our money-making projects such as Warbirds,Wings and Wheels and various Air Shows. But we are going to have to do these money raisers more often and we will need every member's support. We are going to need more volunteers. If you have attended either of the last two dinner meetings you know that I have asked all of you to donate 3 hours a month as a docent, a simulator operator, in the library, in the Gift Shop, in restoration, helping the curator with projects or in the kitchen. There is no place in the museum where we don't need more volunteers. Volunteers are always needed for any special event, too. Please step up. We will train you and we will welcome you. Just bring your smile and desire to meet visitors from all over the world. Jerry Event Volunteers Needed 8 Dates to Remember 8 REMEMBER: Dinner reservations will only be accepted, on line or by phone until 6 PM August 3rd 805-296-1935

2 Wednesday August 5, 2015 MENU AUGUST PROGRAM Come meet the author of the book Unforgotten Estrella Warbirds Museum Hero Pulled Pork Sandwich Coleslaw Red Roasted Taters Rolls and Butter Dessert Ice Tea and Coffee $17.00 pp (Includes Tip & Gratuity) RESERVATIONS REQUIRED BY MONDAY, August 3rd 805-296-1935 You can leave a voice message or text to this number. or Use our Website Link: www.ewarbirds.org/dinnerrsvp.html Jim Escalle was born and raised in the San Joaquin Valley town of Delano, California. After attending the College of the Sequoias in Visalia, he went on to receive a degree in Liberal Studies from Fresno State in 1983. When Jim was around eight years old, he was told that he had an uncle who fought and died in the Korean War. At the time, he had been fascinated with anything related to World War II, especially the air war. Jim liked to watch movies on the subject, along with reading just about every book he could find. He also enjoyed going to local air shows and seeing airplanes such as the P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt going through their amazing aerial maneuvers. But it wasn't until Jim began the research on his uncle's life and his involvement in the Korean War that he came to appreciate the sacrifice his uncle's generation made for our country. His book "Unforgotten Hero" not only pays tribute to his uncle, but to every airman who fought and died over the skies of Korea. He will bring copies of his book for anyone who wants to purchase one. Jim currently lives in Bakersfield and has been involved in public education for over 25 years. ************************************************************************************ Be sure to thank George Marrett, a well liked volunteer, for all the really great speakers he manages to get us for our monthly dinners. George participates in many of the local Veteran events in the community to perform the fly overs. We always enjoy his jokes at the dinner meetings, no matter how many oh no s may be spoken. SOCIAL HOUR DINNER 6:00 PM 7:00 PM Pictured with George is your Newsletter Editor, Penny Takier. I spend several hours a month putting it together, as a volunteer. And I love being a Docent one weekend day a month for the museum. Jerry and I recently started to cook one lunch a month, on Saturdays, for our hard working restoration crew. They put in many hours a week bringing new life to our treasures!

3 A BELATED THANK YOU FOR THE WWW 7 EVENT Dan and I would like to extend a huge thank you to all the volunteers that helped to make Warbirds, Wings & Wheels 7 a success. Peter Visel for his support with all the registrations and making sure all the information was on the website. Check out the website for all the great pictures Peter has posted. It was great, as always, to have Peter back in Paso Robles, even for the very short time we were able to have him. Toni Moore and Jeanne Thiebaud who worked tirelessly on securing prizes for our raffle. Toni Moore for recruiting and handling all the volunteers. Howard Love and his crew that did a fantastic job of parking the participant cars on Saturday. Willy Tilly, Peter Visel and Mike Levine for all the great pictures of the cars as they entered the show, the aerial shots by Mike, piloted by Bob Kelly, and all the other pictures taken during the show. Rick Brandt what are we going to do without him when he moves to San Diego. He is so hands on with all he does to make sure each and every event at the museum goes off flawlessly. He headed up emptying the hangar, the cleaning of the hangar, the movement of the tables and chairs and all the beer and wine. The Civil Air Patrol for their help with the setup and the excellent job of parking the spectators. Larry Eastwood and crew for their great food for the Sock Hop, the car show and the volunteer appreciation party after the show. Arnold and Linda Hermansen are always right there to help with anything that needs to be done. Ron Brooks for hanging the sponsor banners in the hangar. Mike Brophy for taking all the banners down around town. Keith Dekker and crew for making sure the Pfauter Building was empty and clean for the vendors. Mike Kelley who did the thankless job of cleaning up all the trash and trash containers after the show. Scott Stelzle for making sure all the planes were put back in the hangar. Special thanks to Sherm Smoot for the use of his T28 trainer for the individual pictures of the participants and their cars. A special thanks to all of the volunteers that came out to help set up and tear down, as well as all the docents and volunteers the day of the show. Many, many thanks to the Woodland family for all they do to support the show by inviting special cars to be on display and their Woodland Family Choice Award. And a big thank you for having the new addition to the Woodland Auto Display completed for the car show. All the car show participants were very appreciative for the newly paved driveway, thanks to the generosity of Dick Woodland, between the hangar and the restoration building. They did not have to drive their cars through the dirt. I know I have missed some important people but rest assured all of you did was greatly appreciated. Without all of your support we could not make this event happen. We look forward to working with all of you next year. Dan and Carol Verstuyft

4 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED IN ALL LOCATIONS OF YOUR MUSEUM CHOOSE YOUR SPOT TO SUPPORT OUR GROWTH We are happy to announce that a longtime volunteer has stepped up to become our Gift Shop Manager. This task is a big one and she will need your help with STOCKING SHELVES, PRICING NEW ITEMS, INVENTORY, GIFT SHOP GREETER/WORKER, CLEANING SHELVES AND BEING PRESENT FOR EVENTS AS A VOLUNTEER. She has expressed concern over staffing the Gift Shop when we are open. IF you can give her just 3 hours a month she would be ever so grateful! The Gift Shop is open from Thursday to Sunday. Hours are 10 AM to 4 PM. Shifts are 10 AM to 1PM and 1 PM to 4 PM. Work on Saturday and you get a cheap lunch in Thomson Hall. Training is provided by Alexandrea or the new Manager. 5 OUR NEED FOR DOCENTS CONTINUES TO GROW! Be the first person to greet our wonderful visitors to Freedom Hall. You will meet visitors from all over the world. Training is easy. You are required to have the ability to smile at strangers, say Welcome and let them know what they are about to see on the museum grounds. If you are aware of any special exhibits, be sure to include the information in your introduction. (Little boys always want to know where the bullets and bombs are located. They love climbing in the turret, too.) We will be adding more attractions for the children as our restoration crew can complete them. With the addition of more buildings, we need more Docent coverage to secure the safety and maintenance of our memorabilia and collections. We are open from Thursday to Sunday, Memorial Day, Labor Day and Veterans Day From 10 AM to 4 PM All shifts available: 10 AM to 1 PM or 1 PM to 4 PM (Inexpensive lunch available most Saturdays) CALL 238-9317 and leave a message for Alexandrea ************************************************************************************** CURATOR S OFFICE NEEDS YOU! Be sure and say Hello Alexandrea Bob Wayne Karen George ************************************************************************************ IF OVER 50 YEARS OLD, THIS IS THE PLACE FOR YOU! YOU WILL FIT RIGHT IN! THE WOODLAND AUTO DISPLAY If you want to increase your knowledge about the old cars, motorcycles, bikes, race cars of all kinds, this is the place for you. We get many rare and expensive vehicles the public comes to view. It is really fun meeting them and talking to them. They may have even owned one of these vehicles in their younger years and want to share with you their memories. Have you seen the 1930 Packard Sedan or the beautifully restored Mustangs? We have a very rare 1955 Mercedes Benz 300 SL Gullwing. We have one of only 10 built 1932 Ford Roadsters which were commissioned by Edsel Ford Jr. to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the 1932 Fords, which were originally designed by his grandfather, Edsel Ford Sr. We will soon have a pristine stock car that was driven by the late Davey Allison. Interested in volunteering here yet? Woodland Auto Display is open the same days and times as the rest of the museum. We need more volunteers due to the expansion. We ask for 3 hour shifts.
