SCIENTIFIC AIMS The Commission for Water Sustainability of the International Geographical Union (IGU) aims to interpret sustainability in the widest possible sense, including the sustainability of the environment in the face of water development work as well as the sustainability of water resources. It aims to foster links between the human and physical aspects of water management, with specific concern for the sustainability of water resources and for the impacts of water management on the environment. In the past 25 years the Commission held regular international conferences in different parts of the world in order to encourage scientific research and development of sustainable water resources practices as well as to bring together researchers from hosting and surrounding countries. Conference subthemes: 1) Climate change and water availability. 2) Water sustainability in the Mediterranean. 3) Water sustainability and modeling in karst regions. 4) Transboundary water resources management. 5) Human interventions into the hydrological cycle - threats to the sustainability. 6) Water quality problems and solutions. 7) GIS and cartography in hydrological research and education.
