BOUTIQUE HOTEL & SPA MACINA GRAND HARBOUR MARINA
SOPHISTICATION LEGACY LUXURY The ALOF is a remarkable restoration project of a unique World Heritage Site into an elegant, minimal and modern luxury boutique hotel for the most affluent individuals. Situated in a landmark building in the southern part of Malta, The Alof is a new destination for the well- travelled discerning guest.
THE HISTORY OF THE SITE Built in 1554 during the reign of La Sengle by military engineer Bellavante, Sheer Bastion sealed off Senglea from Burmula. Thereon, in the early 1600 s, Grandmaster Alof de Wignacourt (1601 22) built a massive structure; a large wooden crane eventually known as il-macina that was designed to hoist heavy cargo or galley parts and bring them ashore. Wignacourt joined the Order in 1564, aged seventeen, and distinguished himself at the Great Siege of Malta a year later. He was elected Grand Master in 1601. He was patron of Caravaggio following the artist s arrival in Malta in 1607 until his arrest and subsequent expulsion from the Order in 1608. His reign was notable for the construction of a number of coastal fortifications (the Wignacourt towers), and of the Wignacourt Aqueduct that brought water from the plateau above Rabat to Valletta. A gate was built as a part of the aqueduct between Birkirkara and Santa Venera, and it had his coat of arms with three fleur-de-lys on it, giving it the name of the Fleur-de-Lys Gate.
At the water s edge of the grand harbour in the heart of the Three Cities lies The Alof, housed in the Macina building along the waterfront of Sanglea in the South of Malta. Facing a recently embellished promenade, the luxury Boutique & Spa Hotel is located at walking distance from the upcoming American University of Malta, further down the road. Flagship Yachts like the Maltese Falcon, The Octupus, and others berth at the Super Yachts Grand Harbour Marina operated by Campers & Nicholsons International marina, being one of the largest marinas servicing super yachts up to 100 meters in length.
