Protected from the elements the 56th floor affords a 360 view of the avenues, roofs, monuments and gardens across the city. Just a few steps further up you can admire the same views from the open-air terrace on the very top of the tower. Although initially criticised by artists and intellectuals of the day it is probably Paris s best-known landmark. The 2nd floor is perfect for making a photographic study of Paris. The only down-side, apart from the queues, you can t see the Eiffel Tower from the Eiffel Tower! Standing at the top of the Champs-Elysées at the highest point along the line running from the Louvre to the Grande Arche de la Défense, it links old and new Paris. Napolean had the arch constructed in 1806 in honour of France s great army and it is also home to the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. From the top of the monument, visitors benefit from a panoramic view of Paris, during the day and at night, and the museum situated within the structure retraces its history. A self-guided visit at the Notre Dame lasts approximately one hour. Montmartre & Sacré Coeur Price from: FREE entrance to the church / Dome and crypt 6 per person An officially designated historic district, Montmartre is one of the most colourful neighbourhoods in Paris, so it s no surprise that this area is a favourite with visitors to the city. It became famous in late 1800s with the arrival of artists such as Renoir, Van Gogh and Picasso. Topped by the Scare Coeur, Montmartre is the highest hill in Paris at 130 metres, providing great free views over the city. Completed in 1912, the Sacré Coeur is relatively new in comparison to other churches and cathedrals in Paris. In a Roman-Byzantine style, the Sacré Coeur is recognizable by its white colour. Inside the building, the ceiling is decorated with the largest mosaic in France measuring about 480 m². Jardins du Luxembourg Île de la Cité Price from: FREE The Île de la Cité is one of two remaining islands in the River Seine and the historical and geographical centre of Paris. Home to the famous Notre Dame cathedral and the Palais de Justice, the modern Supreme Court built in the 18th century, which is also home to La Conciergerie. Musée de l Orangerie Price from: FREE general admission for students / 9 per teacher Visit Monet s Waterlilies installed in two galleries once hailed as the Sistine Chapel of Impressionism at l Orangerie museum. Home to modern- art collections of Paul Guillaume and Jean Walter, l Orangerie also features paintings by Renoir, Cézanne and Picasso, amongst others. Musée Picasso Paris Price from: 5 per person After a five-year renovation the Musée Picasso art gallery located in the well-known Hôtel Salé in the Marais district of Paris has re-opened. With the exhibition space having been doubled in size it has allowed many more works of the master s work to be on display and new tours created of the collections. Shortly after it was completed came the French Revolution, when the Revolutionist government changed the church into a mausoleum. It then flipped back and forth to a church over the years but eventually assumed its lasting role as a burial place for martyrs and brilliant French citizens for good including Victor Hugo and Marie Curie. Inside the architecture is visually amazing: it has the Gothic decorations combined with the mainly classical style of the building, creating a truly remarkable neoclassical monument. He wrote some of his major works here: Marie Tudor, Ruy Blas, Les Burgraves, a large part of Les Misérables, and was visited by Lamartine, Vigny, Dumas and Gautier. The visit of the apartment illustrates the three main stages of his life (before, during and after exile) through the display of different memorabilia and displays of his drawings, as well as an iconography of his literary work. Shopping Place Louis Lepine - Marché aux Fleurs et aux Oiseaux Price from: FREE The square is named after a prefect of police, Louis Lepine. He was given the nickname The Little Man with the Big Stick for his skill is handling large Parisian crowds. The square is now home to the flower market and Sunday bird market. Since 1808, the lovely metal pavilions shade the bucolic Flower Market (Le Marché aux Fleurs). A wide array of flowers, plants and trees can be found. Tens of thousands of pots are displayed : Primavera s, Violets, Bilberries, Pomegranates and other beautiful plants are offered each season. Due to the forms and the vibrant colours, many artists and creators come to loose themselves in this urban prairie looking for inspiration. The market is open daily from 8am - 7.30pm. On Sundays, the picture is complete with the opening of the Bird Market (le Marché aux Oiseaux) where you can find rare species and all the accessories to go with them. Paris Saint-Ouen Flea Market Price from: FREE The rag and bone trade has long been part of Parisian history and towards the end of the 19th century, when the authorities began to clean up the city, the tradesmen and their families were forced to set up home in the area of Saint-Ouen. In the early 1900s, the beginnings of the flea market was born as Parisians came by to browse the stalls and enjoy an illicit drink at the open-air cafés on Sunday mornings. After the First World War, the market grew in popularity and became increasingly commercialised and today it caters for every interest with over 2000 boutiques and market stalls selling all manner of goods.
