Ecological Importance of Area 1. Within the Mesoamerican Biological Hotspot One of twenty five areas of the world being recognized by Conservation International and other organizations as holding most of the Earth s biodiversity. Mesoamerica contains some of the highest biodiversity levels in the world, containing about 8% of the world s known species in only 0.51% of the Earth s surface. There are at least 42 mammals, 31 birds, and 1,541 plants in the area that are endangered. This area is an important wildlife corridor and bird migration route. For more info on the Mesoamerican Biological Hotspot, please visit: www.biodiversityhotspots.org/xp/hotspots/mesoamerica/pages/default.aspx 2. Within the Path of the Tapir Biological Corridor (Paso de La Danta Corredor Biologico) An area identified by ASANA and others as critical for endangered species habitat, such as tapirs, squirrel monkeys, giant anteaters, and jaguars. The corridor is a regional initiative aimed at reestablishing a communication route for the flora and fauna of the forests of the Los Santos Forest Reserve and the Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park. A study by the Nature Conservancy shows that this area is home to an amazing number of species endemic to Costa Rica: 6 plants and trees, 6 reptiles and amphibians, 13 fish, and one mammal. For more information on the Path of the Tapir, read The Path of the Tapir by Quint Newcomer, Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies or visit ASANA s website at: www.asanacostarica.com/biological-corridors 3. Within the Savegre Watershed The Spanish government, in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE), InBio, CEDARENA and the National Museum of Costa Rica conducted a 5 year intensive study on the Savegre Watershed from 1999-2003 and from their research and findings, they have recognized this watershed as being one of the most biodiverse areas of Costa Rica. With only 1.15% of the national territory, the Savegre Watershed contains approximately 20% of all the country s registered species. View additional information and maps on following slides.

Ecological Importance of Area 4. On the Southern border of the Los Santos Forest Reserve Created in November of 1975, this reserve totals 153,000 acres of pre-montane and montante rainforest. Pre-montane forests are the second most endangered life zones in Costa Rica, after tropical dry forests. The Los Santos Forest Reserve (The Saints) is a protected area north of Buenaventura & Pueblo Nuevo Eco-Village with protected primary (virgin) and secondary Tropical Cloud Forests and Humid Rain Forests where hundreds of bird species, wild animals including Jaguars, Tapirs, Sloths and Monkeys and plant species live on the western mountain tops and valleys of the Talamanca Corridor. 40% of Buenaventura s 160 acres are located inside the Los Santos Forest Reserve. Pueblo Nuevo Eco-Village is located directly across from the Los Santos Forest Reserve.
