The Canal du Midi is undoubtedly the most beautiful canal in Europe. It was built by Pierre Paul Riquet between 1667 and 1681 in order to link the Mediterranian to Atlantic ocean. This idea had already been dreamt of by the Romans but was only carried out sixteen centuries later and even at that time was a considerable technological achievement. Look forward to this bicycle tour because this promenade along the water edge allow you to cycle far away from traffic. 1. day Montpellier Arrival Look forward to Montpellier, to many historic buildings, a beautiful botanical garden and the so famous french way of life that is felt everywhere. 2. day Montpellier-Sète 45 km Around 9:30 clock will be a personal greeting, you will get more detailed documents and also your rental bike. Now you can start. From the elegant city of Montpellier you will cycle along the small river Lez on a bike path through a bird sanctuary to Palavas to the Mediterranean Sea. Then you cycle along the Rhone-Sète canal and through the middle of a lake area to Frontignan-Plage and Sète. Here you will stay in one of the most important fishing port on the French Mediterranean coast. The former island, which is connected only by two narrow strips of sand with the mainland, offers a picturesque old town, where you can end your first cycling day in a beautiful atmosphere. 3. day Sète-Béziers 55 km Today you cycle on country roads to Agde, the second oldest city of France. The small picturesque fishing town, whose town scape is characterized by lava stone church of St. Etienne from the 12th century, will inspire you. You will then cycle along the Canal du Midi to Beziers, the former wine trading center. Because of its bullfights, it is also known as "Seville France". Look forward to the town and the impressive 600 meter long gorgeous promenade. Pick out a nice cafe and watch in peace the colorful bustle of the town. 4. day Béziers-Narbonne 45 km The channel bridge across the Orb river takes you to the sluice Fonséranes. On side roads and field tracks you roll through vineyards and reach Narbonne. On first glance, alone the mighty cathedral (one of the three largest in France) indicates the former importance of Narbonne in the world. Once it was an important harbour, the capital of the Provincia
Romana Narbonensis, the most important town west of Rome; today it's a friendly city in the inland at the Canal de la Robine. 5. day Narbonne-Homps 45 km You leave Narbonne along the Canal de la Robine, until you reach the Canal du Midi again. Further on you come through beautiful villages to Homps, which just had an important upswing after building the channel, because its harbour was one of the few in which it was possible to turn the barges. Tonight you have dinner in a restaurant with an exquisite cuisine. 6. day Homps-Carcassonne 45 km At the Canal du Midi you cycle to Trébes, a picturesque village with a historic mill. Roll on through small villages to Carcassonne, the biggest medieval fortified town of Europe. The double ring of big, massive pinnacle embattled walls is 3 m in caliber and is a memorable sight with its 52 mighty towers. 7. day Carcassonne Departure Today your wonderful bike journey along the Canal du Midi ends. By bus or train you can quickly get back to Montpellier. It is also possibe to return to Sète on a cosy houseboat within a week.

Available rental bikes There are touring bikes (unisex) with 7-speed gear shift and coaster brake, or 21-speed gear shift and freewheel bikes (unisex) available. The bikes are equipped with a saddle bag, an air pump, a repair kit and a safety vest. Transfer back to the starting point of the journey Saturdays at 10am there is the possibility to transfer back to Montpellier with a small bus. (Arrival at 11.30am, costs 40.00EUR per person). The driver comes to pick you up at your hotel and has much room for you, your luggage and where required your own bicycle. Please note that there is a minimum number of 4 persons for the return transfer!in the period from 30.06. - 25.08.2018 the back transfer is not available!alternatively, you can return back to Montpellier by train (journey time approximately 1-2 hours, without train change, costs about EUR 25.00 per person).
