Presidents Report Presidents Report Monday 16th September A very short report after a very busy week Over 150 calls on the Garage sale Line so far, a shortage of trailers & towballs early in the week & a very hectic Saturday. Tom had the annex to the fire station erected by Sun 8 th & we were able to make good use of it by asking people donating goods to bring them direct to the Fire station on Saturday & Sunday afternoons. There were still plenty of larger items to collect & the use of a hired pantech with a tail gate lifter plus Gino s truck & trailer enabled us to do some 20 odd collections of furniture on Saturday & get finished by 4pm. We have access to the Guide hall from Tuesday 17 th so are hopeful that we can continue to store goods on or adjacent to the Sale site reducing the need to transfer it from storage to the site next Friday. The Sharps are sorting & collecting books & Jill Turnbull is collecting & will organise sorting of the clothing. We also have at least 3 young blokes & the firies promising to help us from 6.oo am to 8 am on the Saturday of the Sale. With 6 members & partners still away travelling in Australia & Overseas we really do need a full club effort over next Friday & especially Saturday & Sunday. The new fun day concept should draw extra residents & their families to the site but means we need an extra 8 or 9 people to man the attractions. David will send the sheets out and we will complete them on Monday night & try to fill any vacancies with family, friends & members of local community Groups. Belmonte at Pennant hills has been chosen for Saturday night s dinner. I have tentatively booked for 24. It s BYO & I will bring Red & White wine. Thanks to all those members & partners that have helped so far with collections & sorting. The game goes on!!! President Clive Denmark Volume 27 Issue 11 Page 2 of 10 Monday 16 September 2013

Night Report Master of Ceremonies PP Ron Hodge Called the meeting to order and welcomed all guests and read out the apologies. President Mariam Jacka resplendent in her beautiful red top acknowledged all the previous Rotarians and their partners who have assisted the club in all the previous projects and there were many worthy recipients. Following the Rotary tradition Loyal Toast was raised by PP Joan van den Burg followed by Toast to Rotary International by PE John Hardiman. President Mariam Jacka then presented the Paul Harris Award to Dr Jim Taggart OAM a prominent businessman from Hills District. Jim started his career as a teacher and Deputy Principal of a Catholic School and went on to successfully develop financial services business. Jim has been actively involved in many community activities such as the Salvation Army, Red Shield Appeal, Local Chambers of Commerce. He was also the Chairman for the Sydney 2000 Olympics Fund raising Committee for Western Sydney. In January 2006 Jim was awarded with the Hills Shire 2006 Australia Day Award for Community Service and the Medal of the Order of Australia in the 2010 Australia Day Honours. PP John van den Burg then did the Introduction of Vanuata project and called on Dr Marie Quinn from the Australian Catholic University to do a presentation. Dr Marie spoke of the huge challenges which her band of voluntary teachers faced teaching without any aid of technology, going back to the basics of books, blackboard and chalk and yet they loved every minute of their visit and made many friends whom they still mentor. President Mariam Jacka then called upon DG Graeme Davies to present the whole team with recognition certificates. PP Phil Isaacs then spoke about the challenges they faced with their project on Low Power Consuming Computers especially issues concerning sustainability. Melynda Austin teacher from Western Institute of TAFE Hills Campus and her fantastic students including Prince (Imran) Budhwani took up the challenge. The computers must be able to withstand high temperatures and humidity. They are simple to operate with very low power requirement with Free software. No fans, not easy to resell and most importantly low cost (budget $500/-). The kids had never seen a computer let alone used one. Verdict: The project was a huge success and the trip was just fantastic which no amount of money could buy. If you want to volunteer though I must add it is not for the faint hearted or people seeking glory then contact President Mariam Jacka I have been told the sun rise and sun set views are the most spectacular with some hearty locally grown cuisine. There was a lucky draw unfortunately not won by your night reporter or for that matter any members of our club. It was a long night and the presentation ended past 10:00pm. Last one to leave please turn off the light! Night Reporter Cawas Volume 27 Issue 11 Page 3 of 10 Monday 16 September 2013

Humour As Air Force One arrives at the Heathrow Airport, President Obama strides to a warm and dignified reception from the Queen. They are driven in a 1934 Bentley to the edge of central London, where they change to a magnificent 17th century carriage hitched to six white horses. They continue on towards Buckingham Palace, waving to the thousands of cheering Britons; all is going well. Suddenly, the right rear horse lets out the most horrendous earth shattering fart ever heard in the British Empire. The smell is so atrocious that both passengers in the carriage, must use handkerchiefs over their noses. The fart shakes the coach, but, the two dignitaries of State do their best to ignore the incident. The Queen politely turns to President Obama and says: "Mr President, please, accept my deepest regrets... I am sure you understand there are some things that even a Queen cannot control." Obama, always trying to be "Presidential," responded: "Your Majesty, do not give the matter another thought... Until you mentioned it, I thought it was one of the horses." Moral of the story: "Silence is Golden" Contributed by Tony Makin Notices ALL hands on deck for the Garage Sale this next week please 18 th November -- Rotary Foundation Dinner Districts 9685 & 9675 Please note that this event unfortunately clashes with our main membership drive night 1 st - 4 th June 2014 RI Convention Sydney (Flyer attached) Volume 27 Issue 11 Page 7 of 10 Monday 16 September 2013
