Sunday, January 14 TBD Arrive to Havana. 3 pm Check-in at Meliá Cohiba Hotel. Located in the modern district of Vedado and facing the famous Malecón, it is a leading business and meeting hotel with stunning views of the city and the sea. 5:30 pm Socio-economic discussion with urban planner Miguel Coyula, whose presentation will touch on housing, infrastructure, investment and restoration programs. It s bound to leave you with a better understanding of why Havana looks the way it does today and possibilities moving forward. At the hotel. 7 pm Welcome dinner at Paladar San Cristobal. Located in the heart of Central Havana, this paladar has a reputation of excellence in both atmosphere and local cuisine. Enjoy great food while the local takes you back to the 1940s and 50s. Monday, January 15 9 am Walking tour of the Old City. Visit the Plaza de Armas, a scenic tree-lined plaza formerly at the center of influence in Cuba. It is surrounded by many of the most historic structures in Havana as well as important monuments. See the Plaza de San Francisco, a cobbled plaza surrounded by buildings dating from the 18th century, dominated by the baroque Iglesia and Convento de San Francisco dating from 1719. Wander through the Plaza Vieja, the oldest plaza in Havana, dating from the 16th century. 11 am Visit a Gym in Old Havana. We will be received by its manager, take a tour and discuss about their services, community programs, current challenges and opportunities. 11:45 pm Walk along Mercaderes Street and visit Plaza de la Catedral where the famous Havana Cathedral is located, the best example of Cuban baroque style in the city. 12:30 pm Lunch at Doña Eutimia paladar. Famous for its ropa vieja and frozen mojitos, this cozy paladar made Newsweek Magazine s top 100 restaurants in the world in 2012. The restaurant s location in the beautiful cathedral square is unbeatable. 2:30 pm Visit Clandestina, a great little shop selling artisanal pieces such as contemporary posters, T-shirts, homewares and jewelry. This rising small business is owned by graphic artist Idania del Río and it commercializes and promotes the imagination and creativity of young Cuban designers. 4 pm Meet with the Barrio Habana team, a nonprofit organization that leads a community sports-arts program in Old Havana for children, at-risk youth and elderly people, while also contributing to preserve the heritage of the city.

Tuesday, January 16 9 am Morning discussion with the Reina y Real, a female hip hop/jazz duo. The group s music focuses on breaking down stereotypes in Cuban society, including machismo, healthy relationships, gender relations and race. They will share info about their interesting musical journey and insight into the challenges and opportunities young Cubans face. 11 am Enjoy a performance by Habana Compás Dance, which encompasses the rich rhythm and flow of the island, performing traditional and modern dances born from their Spanish, Cuban and Afro-Cuban heritage. 1 pm Lunch at El Aljibe, a government-run restaurant famous for its black beans, baked chicken and large family style portions. 3 pm Visit a centuries-old home in Vedado neighborhood, where we ll receive a tour by the owner. 4 pm Rum and cigar tasting at AltaMira art loft. A local expert will explain the qualities and traits of fine Cuban rum and cigars, pairing them together for the perfect match. Discussion with the AltaMira family about art, culture and daily life on the island. Wednesday, January 17 9 am Depart for Viñales. Considered by many to be the most beautiful place in Cuba, the Viñales Valley National Monument holds stunning landscapes. The area is also famous for being the premier tobacco growing area in the world. 11:30 am Arrive to Viñales. Stop at the lookout at Los Jazmines hotel, before descending into the valley. 12:30 pm Enjoy lunch on the grounds of a local farm, Finca Paraiso Argoecologica (the agroecological Paradise Farm), where we will learn about Cuban agriculture and tobacco production while indulging in an organic meal. 2 pm Check-in at bed and breakfasts, known as casas particulares, or private homes. Since the 1990s Cuban families have been permitted to rent rooms out of their family homes to foreigners. Featuring comfortable accommodations and ample privacy, it s a great way to interact with everyday Cubans. 4 pm Discussion with the town Historian Ricardo Álvarez about local development issues in agricultural, private sector growth and foreign investment. 5 pm Explore downtown Viñales. Walk along the main street and visit the central plaza and local markets.

Thursday, January 18 9 am Enjoy a morning stroll through tobacco fields to learn about the Valley s most important crop, and other flora and fauna of the area. Stop at the home of a local tobacco farmer, who will teach us about the cultivation and production process, followed by a rolling demo. He might even light up a cigar or two for the group. Explore on your own and take part in activities that support the Cuban people, such as visiting art galleries, eating at private restaurants, speaking with artisans, or hiring private cars and bicycle taxis. CET representatives will offer guidance on ensuring legal compliance with OFAC regulations. 5 pm Attend salsa lessons to learn the moves of Cuba s most famous type of dance. 7 pm Enjoy a home-cooked meal prepared by your hosts. Friday, January 19 10:30 am Check-out of casas and return to Havana. 1 pm Lunch Reservation at Havana s 21 restaurant in Vedado. (not included to be paid on the ground. 3 pm Check-in at Meliá Cohiba. 6 pm Spend the early evening at Café Madrigal with Frank Delgado, renowned singer and songwriter, for a discussion about the nueva trova movement in Cuba, followed by a musical performance. Café Madrigal, owned and run by film director Rafael Rosales, is housed in a beautiful colonial mansion with the walls lined with captivating artwork. Enjoy tasty tapas and cocktails. 7:30 pm Behind the Scene s visit to Fabrica de Arte Cubano, the premier location for viewing some of the freshest art and Cuban design in Havana. The brainchild of Afro-Cuban fusion musician X-Alfonso, it has become the country s most successful art and music venue and a meeting spot for a young, eclectic crowd of Cubans and foreigners. 8 pm Dinner Reservation at Tierra, Havana s newest international dinning spot. Located inside a container in the Fábrica de Arte Cubano, the restaurant mirrors the eclectic crowd, serving dishes from around the world. (not included to be paid on the ground) Saturday, January 20 10 am Visit to La Finca Vigía. Formerly the home of Ernest Hemingway, today it still houses his expansive collection of books. It was here where he wrote two of his most celebrated novels: For Whom the Bell Tolls and The Old Man and the Sea. The beautiful grounds and bizarre tales from Hemingway s many years in Cuba are captivating.

11 am Tour of Alamar. This Soviet style housing project is filled with prefabricated buildings completed by the popular micro brigade movement in Cuba in which neighbors constructed and worked on building their own homes. Meet with local residents and visit a farmers market and ration store to get a feel for local living. You ll have the option to eat lunch at El Chanchullero, a privately-run restaurant popular with the locals. Following lunch, visit Playas del Este (eastern beaches), where Habaneros go to escape the city heat. Take a stroll in the white sand and a dip in the turquoise water. 8 pm Farewell dinner at Paladar Atelier. This restaurant is equally known for its atmosphere and exquisite cuisine. The lighting and textures of the house, which was home to a prerevolutionary senator, coupled with walls adorned in modern art, create a cozy but modern setting. Sunday, January 21 Morning Check-out and depart for the airport (2 ½ hours before your flight departs).
