Schonbrunn Palace The splendid baroque building which dates back to the 17th century, and the adjoining extensive park, are two of the most visited sights in town. A tour of Schonbrunn s grandiose rooms provides a look into the world of the Austrian imperial house. It was here that Franz Joseph, who married the enchanting Sisi, and ruled from 1848 to 1916, was born. Today the Palace is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 15

Vienna Woods This tour shows you the most beautiful sights of Vienna s surroundings, namely the Vienna woods with their rolling coniferous and deciduous woodlands. You will also experience numerous vineyards, and the Danube River. Driving through the Vienna woods, you will visit the Cistercian Abbey of Heiligenkreuz, and the Memorial Chapel of Mayerling. Via the romantic Helenental, you will reach the old Roman city of Baden, a popular spa town. From there, you will ride back to Vienna, eventually passing the wine-growing village of Gumpoldskirchen. 19
Seegrotte Perhaps you are more intrigued by the mysteries of water than those of land, and in that case the beautiful Seegrotte is for you. The largest underground lake in Europe, this beautiful geographical feature of the woods was once a gypsum mine, but was flooded in the beginning of the 20 th century. Now, visitors have the opportunity to tour the remains of the mine or take an other-worldly boat ride across the underground lake. 20
Mayerling This hunting lodge is home to not only an incredibly important cloister of nuns, but one of the most interesting and mysterious events of the Hapsburg empire the suicide/murder of Crown prince Rudolph and his mistress Mary Vetsera. While it is unclear what exactly did happen that night, visitors can now tour the site of The Mayerling Incident set against the beautiful backdrop of these amazing woods. 21

Baden Pamper yourself in the beautiful spa town of Baden. This town, which literally translates to baths in German, takes its name from the 13 hot springs that are around the city. Even the ancient Romans came to Baden to get away, and some of the ruins from their stays here are still visible. Another famous guest of this town is the great composer Beethoven, and you can visit his old haunts today as well. 23

Dinner @ Piaristenkeller This is a 300 year old monastery cellar with two imperial museums and a historic restaurant. Whether the occasion is a good meal in the Music Area, or great parties with 300 guests in the vast vault, the charm of this monastery cellar largely lies in its enduring romanticism of the type that can only from over centuries. Attractions of the restaurant include a visit to the wine cellar, the Emperor Franz Joseph Hat Museum, as well as the Imperial and Royal Wine Treasure Vault, before or after the meal. Spanish Riding School in Vienna Levade, courbette and capriole are classical school jumps performed by the Lipizzaner stallions, who enchant their public at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. The traditions of this haute école of classic equestrianism have been passed down by word of mouth for more than 400 years. Once these intelligent white stallions have completed their training, they are known as professors. These world famous horses originally from Spain are schooled in the Winter Riding School of the Hofburg Palace in a hippodrome once reserved for the imperial family. During their morning exercise they practice the choreographed steps which will be executed perfectly at the evening gala with their riders. 27
Shopping in Vienna The main shopping streets are located in the city center. The great luxury brands have discovered Vienna. They present cool elegance and stylish glamour in exclusive boutiques between Kohlmarkt and Kärntner Strasse. Other famous shopping streets are the Graben, or Mariahilferstrasse: one of the longest and most lively shopping streets in Vienna. The Naschmarkt is a vegetable-and-fruit market with a lively scene everyday. For a visit, head south of the opera district. 28
