Tour Descriptions for Bergen, Norway HARDANGER FJORD Bergen, Norway Tour Code: BGO_16 The Hardanger Fjord is one of the favorites among the many Norwegian fjords. Its the 3rd largest fjord in the world and the 2nd largest in Norway. You ll start by driving by the fortress of Bergenhus, King Hakon's Hall and the Rosenkrantz Tower. Pass by the buildings of the Hanseatic period and the fish market of Bergen. Continue to the Bjornefjord, where you ll have a short drive along the fjord with lovely views of islands and snowcapped mountains in the distance. You ll travel by ferry across the fjord from Hatvik to Venjanesetand and in Mundheim, link up with the Hardanger Fjord the queen of the fjords. Near the village of Norheimsund, you'll make a stop for lunch and continue to the Steinsdal Waterfall. Here, the water falls away from the cliff enabling you to walk underneath without getting wet. Climb up the Tokagjel gorge via several tunnels and reach the mountain plateau Kvamskogen. Descend to the fjord once more before climbing up to Gulbotn, a recreation area with lit up skiing tracks. You ll then travel down to the Sorfjord, where you ll find Oster Island, the largest island on the west coast. Note: Tour involves walking.03 miles/50 meters to the platform at the waterfall and.03 miles/50 meters from the parking lot to the lunch venue. Walking is on asphalt and uneven gravel. Wear flat and comfortable shoes. There is a steep, gravel path to the waterfall for participants who wish to walk behind it. This path can be slippery when wet. However, the waterfall can also be seen from the parking lot or from the bus. $261* $177* 7½ hours CITY SIGHTS & MT. FLOIEN Bergen, Norway Tour Code: BGO_14 Bergen was founded in the year 1070 and up to the 1830 s it was the largest city in the country and a center for commerce and shipping. For several centuries the Hanseatic Merchants had one of their four trading offices here and today it s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Bergen was founded in 1070, when the Kingdom of Norway was at the peak of its power. Today, Bergen is the second largest city in Norway. Your tour starts with a drive along the old wharf side of Bryggen with the characteristic wooden buildings and pointed gables facing the harbor. You ll stop for a walk through the ancient buildings and alleyways which today is home to workshops, where painters, weavers and craftsmen produce fine quality and original items. Continue by coach through suburban areas ending your tour of Bergen with a ride up to Mount Floien. The funicular will take you safely up to approximately 1,050 feet/320 meters above sea level. The ride takes from 5 to 8 minutes each way. From the top you can enjoy a magnificent view of Bergen and the surroundings. You ll return to the center by funicular where your coach will be waiting to take you back to your ship. Note: At Bryggen, tour involves approximately 30 minutes of walking on asphalt, cobblestone or wooden deck. Wear flat, comfortable shoes. $104* $72* 3 hours German Spanish NORWAY IN A NUTSHELL Bergen, Norway Tour Code: BGO_11 On this exclusive tour, you ll see some of the most beautiful sights of Norway. Drive past Bryggen and the Hanseatic quarters before heading to the village of Voss. Here, you ll board a train that will take you through picturesque agricultural areas and an upward journey towards the mountains. At Myrdal station, you ll change trains and board the Flam Line that takes you down the mountain to the tiny village of Flam. After a short break, you ll board your coach and drive to the little village of Gudvangen From here, the road takes you up the Naeroydalen (Narrow Valley). After maneuvering the many hairpin bends of Stalheim Canyon, you ll reach the Stalheim Hotel where a fantastic view of the valley and a delicious lunch await. After lunch, the tour continues along Opheim Lake and further on to Tvinde Waterfalls, where a stop will be made. The drive is through Voss village and via Dale back to Bergen. Note: Guests who suffer from vertigo should not participate as the tour includes driving the very steep Stalheim Canyon on the scenic zig zag road. Participants must manage 2 to 3 high steps to enter train and gaps between train and platform. Drivers and guides cannot push wheelchairs or lift passengers. Wear flat, comfortable shoes and dress in layers for a long day. This tour is not offered on Norwegian Star May 20 or June 5, 2015 sailings. $345* $198* 9 hours BERGEN ON FOOT & FUNICULAR Bergen, Norway Tour Code: BGO_07 Discover historic Bergen on your guided walk through the old city. Make your way past the University Library and Botanical Gardens. See Grieg Hall, built in the shape of a grand piano and the park where many of the city s art museums are located. Cross Bergen s main square, Torgalmenningen, with the Seamen s statue. Soon after, you'll pass the Fish Market on your way to Bryggen Hanseatic Quarters. and a great variety of restaurants and pubs. Before reaching Bergen s oldest street, Ovregaten Street, you'll pass by St. Mary s church, one of the outstanding Romanesque churches in the country. Bergen has seven mountains and on this tour you ll take the funicular to the top of Mt. Floien, approximately 1,050 feet/320 meters above the city. The ride takes about five to eight minutes and travels at a 26 degree incline, stopping for commuters along the way. At the summit, be prepared for magnificent views of the city, harbor and countryside, weather permitting. There ll be time for shopping or a short walk on one of the forest trails before you return to the city center by funicular and back to your ship. Note: Participants must be at least 12 years of age and in good health. The full duration of the tour is on foot, participants must be able to keep up with the group for the duration. Walking surfaces are asphalt, gravel, wood and cobblestone. The Hanseatic Museum has a steep and long staircase and the corridors and rooms are very narrow. Wear comfortable walking shoes and sunscreen. $83* $62* 3 hours TROLDHAUGEN & FANTOFT STAVE CHURCH Bergen, Norway Tour Code: BGO_04 Your tour will begin with a drive along Bryggen Hanseatic Quarters where the old wooden warehouses are now occupied by artists, shops and a variety of restaurants. You ll continue through the city and suburbs, leading to Troldhaugen. This was the home of composer, Edvard Grieg for 22 years. Beautifully situated by the peaceful Nordasvannet Lake, Grieg composed many of his most famous works here. Your next stop is at the Fantoft Stave Church. The old stave church, originally built in 1150, burned down in 1992, and is now rebuilt just as it was before the fire. On your way back, your coach will stop near the Fish and Flower Market in the center of the city for guests wanting to remain in town. Note: There is a 10 minute walk from the parking lot to the Edvard Grieg museum on gravel road and a five minute walk each way to the church and 2 steps to enter.
