Notes for PIERRE DUMOUCHEL: According to the etymology dictionnary of names and surnames of families in France de Dauzat; "mouchel or monchel" is the variation in Normandy of "moncel or monceau", "small mount". The Dumouchel from Normandy, at the origin would have to occupy a house on a mount, the name, it seems would come from the location of the house. Pierre Dumouchel and Marie Lebret are the parents of the first ancestor in Canada. France, and died 22 Oct 1697 in Ville-Marie (Montreal), Qc. Notes for (LAROCHE). BERNARD DUMOUCHEL: Bernard Dumouchel imigrated to Canada around 1671, at the age of 19. He married Jeanne Juin at the age of 21. He was a shoe-maker by trade. On Oct. 1, 1677, he received a concession from Charles Le Gardeur, Sieur de Villiers, of three acres of land on the edge of the St-Michel river (Notary Jean Cusson). On Feb. 24, 1677, he ends a society with Francois Lory for the purchase of leather to make shoes (as mentioned in a document with Notary Antoine Adhemar). In the 1681 census, he was living at "Prairies Marsolet" near Trois-Rivieres, as a shoe-maker, aged 30 years, he owned a land of 5 acres. His wife, Jeanne Juin was 26 years old, his children were: Jeanne 8 years old, Marie 4 years old, Francoise 1 year old. On Oct. 10, 1683, (according to the Notary Severin Ameau) he buys from Nicolas Petit, a house located at the bottom of the plateau (of the fort) of Trois-Rivieres to work his trade of shoe-maker. On Nov. 10, 1684, Bernard Dumouchel obtains that the justice stop Gabriel Benoit to demolish his house constructed on a 3/4 acre land, on the edge of the fleuve in the seigneury Marsolet. On May 29, Bernard Dumouchel sells his concession of land to Louis Tetreau. On July 19, he annuls this sale. On March 10, 1686, he signs an obligation of 22 minots of wheat with Jacques Aubuchon. In the spring of 1687, he moves to Montreal. On March 3, of the same year, he has a contract drawn up and a lease with Louis Guertin, also a shoe-maker. On March 14, 1688, he signs a lease as a farmer for Mr. de Longueuil (Charles Lemoyne) he worked for Mr. Longueuil during 13 years (1688-1701). On Oct. 22, 1697, after the death of his wife, he weds at the age of 45 years of age, at the Notre-Dame church in Montreal, Francoise Saulnier, is 59 years of age. It was her fourth marriage. In 1701, Bernard Dumouchel returned to his trade of shoe-maker, having given indentures, of which, one on Nov. 30, 1701 to Claude Maurice dit LaFantaisie, who married his daughter Madeleine in 1699. On July 7, 1704, the Sovereign Council of New France issued a judgement dismissing the appeal made by Louis Dupre, merchant of Montreal, in favor of Bernard and Paul Dumouchel. More About (LAROCHE). Jeanne Juin immigrated to Canada in 1671 at the age of 16, with a contingent directed by Elisabeth Estienne; she was directed to Trois-Rivieres as "Fille du Roy" which brought her a wedding gift in the amount of 50 livres. She died between May 30, 1689 and October 22, 1697. She could not write. She arrived from the Port de la Rochelle in France, on Sept. 29, 1659. the crossing of the Atlantic ocean was very troublesome and had lasted almost three months on the St- Andre boat. Francoise Saulnier was part of the recruit of 1659, 100 persons who had arrived in Montreal with Sister Marguerite Bourgeois, with 16 girls to be married. Her first marriage took place in Montreal, within two months of her arrival, at age 21, on October 20, 1659, with Pierre Lorain. Her second marraige, on Oct. 7, 1787, at age 49 was with Jean Le Roy. Notes for LOUIS-JOSEPH DUMOUCHEL: The 1741 census shows that he was living on the outskirts of St-Louis, on the northern side of the city of Montreal and east of the road of the parish St-Laurent (parish founded in 1720). He declared to the censor that he could not write, along with 298 out of the 506 people in Montreal. He lived all his life in Montreal, as indicated by all the baptisms of his children. In 1759, Louis-Joseph Dumouchel was a black-smith in Montreal. He lost the amount of 5,287 livres that he had loaned to the Intendant Bigot in the government. This Intendant deceited the Canadians out of seven millions in ordinance and boarding a ship with everyone's money and returning to France. He had practically ruined everybody before leaving.
