Fall Foliage Voyage to New England & the Hudson River Discovering Historic Towns & Scenic Waterways with johns hopkins professor bill leslie Aboard the 130-Guest Yorktown October 4-11, 2014 reduced rates

Dear Alumni and Friends, Autumn in the Northeastern United States is a sight to behold. A kaleidoscope of color sets the shores ablaze, and hilly coastlines and deep blue water contrast beautifully with the changing foliage. As the heat and crowds of summer wane, join us to witness not just the natural splendor of New England and the Hudson River Valley, but their long and storied history as well. Your journey begins as we depart from the legendary whaling town of Gloucester for Maine s Bar Harbor, the once-exclusive resort town for America s most notable families and the doorstep to lush Acadia National Park. Take solace among the wild bird life and abundant native plants of the Wild Gardens of Acadia before sailing Maine s rugged coast for the town of Bath, proud home to an exceptionally long line of New England shipbuilders. As you continue your journey southward, the Atlantic shoreline will be ablaze in the vibrant colors of autumn. Delight in the characteristic burnt orange, crimson, and amber leaves as you sail into two quintessential New England enclaves: Nantucket, once the center of the whaling industry, and Newport, the Gilded-Age playground to the likes of the Astors, Belmonts, and Vanderbilts, whose summer cottages stand as stately monuments to a bygone era. Once Yorktown rounds the tip of Manhattan, you ll witness the autumnal glory of the banks of the Hudson River, which painter Albert Bierstadt referred to as America s Garden of Eden. Along the shore of this broad thoroughfare, so important to the history of America, you will discover the remarkable gardens, art, history, and scenery of the Rockefeller estate at Kykuit, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum, and the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site. In mid-october, the fall foliage of New England and the Hudson River Valley will be at its peak. As you admire the spectacle that nature provides, you will be enlightened and entertained by Stuart Bill Leslie, Professor of History of Science and Technology at the Johns Hopkins University, who plans to lecture on the Hudson River School of artists, the Statue of Liberty, and New England industrial history. Professor Leslie will be joined onboard by William Cogar, a scholar of naval and maritime history, and naturalist Miles Hearn. Together, these experts will present a series of lectures and engage in informal discussions to help you better understand the history and nature you ll encounter on this voyage. Aboard the 130-guest small ship Yorktown, you ll sail close enough to the shore to see the brilliant hues of the turning leaves. Join us this October on a wonderfully relaxed voyage to fascinating historic places amid splendid fall foliage. Sincerely, Marguerite Ingalls Jones, A&S 74, Bus 88 Travel Program Director, The Johns Hopkins University Office of Alumni Relations P.S. As an added incentive, you can save $500 per person off the cruise and land rates if you book by April 14, 2014! Call today to reserve your cabin. Cover: The beautiful shores of the Hudson River

Yorktown Yorktown s inviting Lounge Most cabins feature a picture window Yorktown is the perfect vessel for relaxed and convivial exploration of America s great coastal waterways. Built in Florida in 1988 specifically for coastal cruising and certified by the U.S. Coast Guard, Yorktown flies the American flag and is staffed by friendly and experienced American officers and crew. With a draft of only 9 feet, Yorktown is able to maneuver in secluded waterways and visit small ports that are inaccessible to larger vessels. And Yorktown s American registry makes it possible to operate domestic itineraries unavailable to foreign-flag ships. The ship s cuisine, served in a dining room large enough to accommodate all guests at once, emphasizes American regional culinary traditions. Accommodating only 130 guests in 65 exterior cabins, Yorktown, while not a luxury vessel, enjoys an atmosphere of warm and relaxed informality that endears it to repeat and new guests alike. Life aboard Yorktown Life aboard Yorktown is relaxed and informal, and dress is always casual. Guests discover soon after settling in that the ship s design fosters a sense of community and shared enterprise. The cabins are extremely comfortable for their size and well designed to maximize the square footage. Most have large picture windows, and each is furnished with comfortable beds, a writing desk, ample storage, a clock/radio/cd player, and a private bathroom. Your cabin is the perfect place for peace and quiet and for private rest and reflection. But you will want to spend most of your time in one of Yorktown s inviting common areas. The Lounge, never more than two decks away (Yorktown has no elevator), is the hub of shipboard activity the place to read, to converse with fellow travelers, to attend lectures and concerts, to enjoy a cocktail as the pianist performs on the ship s piano, or simply to take in unobstructed views of the passing scene. The Sun Deck affords similar opportunities to read and relax in the open air.
