BRIDGE REPORTS & CURRENT EVENTS Commodore John Hallbauer We all enjoyed our cruise to Coral Ridge Yacht Club for Sunday brunch. Thank you to Captain Collins, Goldberg and Parent and to Johann Leigh for organizing the event. The party began upon leaving the face dock at the Club. Champagne and cheese were served on each boat for the 47 travelers to enjoy on the cruise. We all had a marvelous time! Although the yearly calendar for club events states we are going to a Del Ray restaurant on May 9th, we changed plans and are heading south where there will be less bridge opening issues. We are headed to the Blue Moon Restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale for dinner. According to Trip Advisor, the Blue Moon Restaurant is the recipient of numerous awards for culinary excellence. The Advisor states: It is a well-known fact that Blue Moon offers the finest waterfront dining in Fort Lauderdale and is in the top tier of acclaimed restaurants within the entire South Florida region. Blue Moon's elegant interior dining room is decorated in authentic Art Deco style but there's nothing quite as magical as enjoying an expertly crafted gourmet meal on the Blue Moon terrace where the boats pass by in graceful motion throughout the day and night. Our trip to Sea Isle Marina was met with weather challenges, but as Corinthians, we all adapted and had a great weekend despite the rain. There was plenty to do at the Marriot resort such as relaxing! A fun time was had by all at Keeping Afloat, our Past Commodores' ball. Everyone danced the night away to the music of Noreen Downey and Florida's Finest. The Past Commodores Ball was a great success thanks to Kathy Vogel and Hank McFadden. The event truly honored our Past Commodores who have kept our traditions alive. Thank you to all who were in attendance for making it a truly special evening. Rear Commodore Jim Reichard - Up and Coming Events The Past Commodore s Ball on April 20 th was a great success. Thank you Kathy Vogel, event chair, and Hank McFadden, event co-chair, for a job well done. Our next event is the general membership mee ng on May 20 th. Many people are heading north for the summer so we may not see some of you un l this fall. Fader and I hope everyone has a great and safe summer. Don t forget about the annual membership mee ng on Oct 12 th. Winner of the Corinthian Catchy Phrase Contest is: Maureen Jacobson with her entry of: Good Times, Good Friends, Good Seas! Congratulations, Maureen! You will begin seeing our new motto on various items in the ship s store and on publications. VOLUME XLVIII, NUMBER 6 May 2012 PAGE 2

Membership by Bill Spinelli A Corinthian greeting from your membership team! Please allow us to introduce our prospective Corinthian applicants. Let's welcome a couple who bring a wealth of international cruising experiences, vitality and a desire to cruise and celebrate with us in our southern latitudes. Several months ago our new candidates came to me and expressed a serious interest in our Corinthian events and fun times. Linda Lennon and I worked together so that this new couple was able to join the LPYRC just last week. I proudly introduce to you Alexander Cazin and Danielle Zerger who currently live in Boca Raton, but have a home under construction at NE 30th Court. Alex and Danielle also took possession of a larger yacht this week. Their new boat is a 45 foot Formula with Zeus" pod drives capable of 33 Kts. In fact their boat moored next to my boat on "C" dock for three years at LHPYC prior to their ownership. Alex and Danielle are eager to meet new friends and continue their boating experience with us. They have already signed up for the June 8th trip to Port Lucaya as well as our July 4th celebration and cruise to Bahia Mar. Alex is a forensic engineer and Danielle manages her own firm which trades in semi precious stones do I have your attention ladies? At our April 19, 2012 meeting of the BOG "first readings" were affirmed for Alex and Danielle. As you are aware, "second readings" will be held at our May meeting. Please take every opportunity to spend some quality "moments" with them and show off our remarkable club. Sincerely, Bill Spinelli and Your Membership Team Let s Relax: Join us in Lucaya Danielle and Alex Let s act like native Bahamians and make this a leisure weekend. We can just lie around in the breezes or join in some or all of our activities, swimming, snorkeling, diving, parasailing, wind surfing, wave runner rentals, fishing, kayaking, riding in a glass bottom boat, or swimming with the dolphins. No need to have a boat. There are hotels close by the marina: Radisson Lucaya Resort 1 Sea Horse Lane, Grand Bahama Island. Sea Isle Cruise-Miami The Hallbauers and Garlands, Parent and Thompson, and the Barons and Steigelmans enjoyed three days in Miami. Yes, the weather was a bit rainy, but we made the most of our time at the Sea Isle Marina. Great weather for the cruise home! The guy who flew past us, got busted by the patrol. Getting to Know Sheri and Steve Bland By Thom DiGiorgio You should really get to know Sheri Bland if you love or participate in ballet. She was born and raised in Utica, New York. Sheri started ballet lessons at the age of seven and pursued this as her main focus in life. It was right after high school when she started dancing professionally! The Boston Ballet recognized her and awarded Sheri a full scholarship. Upon graduation, Sheri worked with several ballet companies on the east and west coasts, before going to Europe, where she continued to excel in her ballet career. Returning from Europe, this all came to an end when she started her family of three children in 1989. Undaunted, Sheri went on to teach ballet for several years. She and her husband built a home in the Adirondack Mountains. Eventually, she moved back to Virginia, went through a divorce and was fortunate enough to meet Steve. As a multi talented individual, Sheri plays tennis and golf very well and is even a great cook! Steve Bland grew up in Terra Haute, Indiana and attended Indiana State and Indiana University, receiving degrees in Management and Finance. He is the proud father of two grown daughters and is gifted with four grandchildren. At the tender age of twenty-nine, he started his own electronic company, developing the first mass produced satellite receiver, resulting in a nationwide network of offices and warehouses in the satellite industry. At this time, he also started a chain of computer stores and audio/video stores. Steve is not only a boater, he has been flying airplanes since he was fifteen years old!! Thru the years, Steve has owned and has flown five airplanes, which included two King Airs! Concurrently, he owned several boats including a few Cigarettes (the kind you don t smoke!) along with three Hatteras vessels. After getting divorced in 1998, Steve decided to move to Virginia. This turned out to be a great decision, because this is where he first met Sheri and her three children. As of this time, he still works relentlessly in his own company in telecommunications and even finds time to travel and play golf. Last year, Sheri and Steve purchased a house in Lighthouse Point. If you miss them at the Club, they are probably spending quality time at their home in Callaway Gardens near Pine Mountain, Georgia. When you see them on our campus, be sure to introduce yourself to these new gregarious Corinthians. Blue Gavel Report by President & P/C Hal Bishop The Chapter Meeting was at the LPYRC on April 10th with 14 in attendance. The next meeting will be May 9th and will be the last meeting of the year at the LPYRC. We will decide on our summer lunch and meeting site at the May meeting. Changing our meeting day to a Wednesday was suggested to take advantage of the Club s buffet. P/C Bert Gartenhaus and Joanne are planning to attend the Spring Meeting of Dist 8 IOBG in Fort Myers April 13-15. He will give a report at our May meeting. We had a very interesting visit to the Morikami Gardens and Museum and enjoyed a Japanese lunch at their restaurant for our March activity. There was a discussion at the meeting on social activities for the next month which included wine tasting or a trip to Calder Race Track and Casino. We will get further details on these alternatives. The mission of the Interna onal Order of the Blue Gavel (IOBG) is to recognize past commodores of the interna onal yach ng community and unite them to promote the highest ideals of yach ng and preserve their tradi ons. All past commodores of any recognized yacht club are invited to join our ac vi es. VOLUME XLVIII, NUMBER 6 May 2012 PAGE 6

BETCHA YOU DIDN T KNOW THIS ABOUT BOCCE! The game of bocce ball dates back to 5200 B.C.! Early Greek physicians advised patients to play bocce for therapeutic exercise. In Europe, the popularity of the game grew to the point at which governments feared for the security of the State, because citizens were more interested in playing the game than defending the State. It got to the point where governments, kings and even the Catholic church condemned the sport, imposing fines and imprisonment on those who disobeyed the law! Bocce was included in the first Olympics in 1896, and now is under consideration to participate in the current Olympics. World-Wide, it ranks second as the most participated sport, preceded only by soccer in Europe and golf in the US. Because of the simplicity of the game, it is one of the few sports that people would rather play than watch. No need to have all kinds of fancy equipment, all kinds of muscle, all kinds of coordination, not even super fast legs. Want to know more about this game that everybody can play and enjoy? Call Thom @ 954-941-3449 or 954-941-3329 x 217 If your appetite is whet then visit us at 9:30 am, Sundays @ the S.E. corner of the LPYRC (outside fence by the tennis courts). Nautical Trivia by Commander Lee Maguire The Commodore asked me why the Chief Executive Officer of a Yacht Club is called the Commodore, instead of the Admiral or some other title. I found out that while there are some clubs in Europe, where the senior officer is an Admiral (the British Kiel Yacht Club and the Royal Cork Yacht Club) most yacht clubs are led by a Commodore. It is also the title given to the most senior captains of shipping lines, special convoys or the one in command of a squadron of ships, and usually denotes the first among equals. In fact, the word comes from comendador, which means having command over others. SAVE THE DATE: JUNE 21-24 NEW ORLEANS ADVENTURE!
