Here, surrounded by a landscape of glittering saline lakes and remote fishing communities, you will sail through fjords echoing to the calls of white-tailed eagles. Cruising on to the engaging city of Tromsø, you will then have some time to explore Norway s Paris of the North before beginning the next leg of the journey. A flight across the Arctic Ocean and beyond 78º North then brings you into the land of the polar bear, where you will explore its vast white wilderness by husky sled and snowmobile. Home to caribous, seals and the Kings of the Arctic themselves, the days are filled with adventure, whilst the nights offer up the promise of the displays of the Northern Lights and a chance to relax and enjoy the sheer majesty of this serene setting. ITINERARY DAY 1: BODO - LOFOTEN Arriving in Bodo today, you will transfer on towards the spectacular Lofoten Islands aboard a Fokker aircraft that will fly you across the stunning Vestfjord. On arrival at Svolvaer Airport a private transfer will then take you on to the Nyvagar Lodge, where you will spend the next two nights. Boasting a spectacular waterfront location, the lodge provides an ideal spot to make the most of the expansive views and perhaps enjoy the magical displays of the Northern Lights. (D) DAY 2: EXPLORING BY SEA A private transfer to the harbour this morning sees you boarding a boat across to the northern end of the archipelago, skirting the impressive mountains that ring the Vestfjord and taking you on into the iconic Trollfjord. There is every chance of spotting whitetailed eagles during the cruise, before continuing on by road towards the fishing village of Henningsvaer. Here you will have a little time to wander and explore this most picturesque of settings, before returning to the lodge by road. (B,L,D) DAY 3: LOFOTEN CRUISE Departing after breakfast this morning you will enjoy a private transfer in the company of your guide, meandering your way through the panoramic landscapes of the Lofoten Islands towards the south. Stopping along the way to enjoy the views across the glacial valleys and out towards the granite mountains, you'll return to the lodge after lunch. Following dinner, you and your luggage will then be transferred aboard the Hurtigruten 'Coastal Steamer' for the onward evening sailing to Tromsø. (B,L,D)
DAY 4: CRUISE - TROMSØ Negotiating a way between towering mountains and deep arctic fjords you'll enjoy breakfast and lunch aboard the boat, before disembarking in Tromsø later today. After a short walk to the hotel, the rest of the day is then free to enjoy the city at your leisure. Home to world's northernmost cathedral, a visit to Tromsø's famous Polar Museum is well recommended. Dinner this evening will be in one of the city's finest restaurants, presenting an ideal opportunity to savour some Arctic specialities. (B,L,D) DAY 5: TROMSØ - LONGYEARBYEN Transferring to Tromsø Airport this morning you will then board an onward flight to Longyearbyen, on the remote Svalbard archipelago. Crossing the Arctic Ocean, the route takes you across the latitude of 78º North, before finally landing you in the world's most northerly permanently inhabited settlement. Following a light lunch you will then be taken on to a polar camp by snowmobile, where a roaring fire, dinner and, hopefully, the Northern Lights will be waiting for you. You will return to Longyearbyen around midnight. (B,L,D) DAY 6: HUSKY EXPEDITION After being collected from the hotel you will be driven over to the husky kennels at 'Trapper's Station' this morning, where you will meet the dogs and change into your winter clothing. After an introduction to dog sledding you will then help with harnessing the dogs and preparing the sleds, before heading off into the Bolterdalen Valley. Surrounded by the Svalbard Mountains you glide through a serene landscape of snow and ice, enjoying lunch along the trail before returning to Longyearbyen later in the day. (B,L)
DAY 7: SNOWMOBILE SAFARI IN THE LAND OF THE POLAR BEARS Today sees you heading out on snowmobiles, to search out some of Svalbard's resident wildlife. With plenty of photo-stops along the way, the day promises a chance to spot seals, caribous and possibly polar bears, against a backdrop of fabulous mountain landscapes. You will cross marine ice and glaciers, visit old trapper's huts and stop for an expedition lunch, before returning to Longyearbyen. Dinner this evening then provides a chance to try some speciality cuisine and the wines from the world's most northerly winery. (B,L,D) DAY 8: LONGYEARBYEN After breakfast you will transfer back to the airport for your return flight home
