The Problem Like most of the rest of Canada, the provincial government is largest land owner in Nova Scotia Unlike rest of Canada, province owns only 35% of land There are growing demands on the land (e.g. protection of land, aboriginal land claims) Information on land assets is difficult to access Land is managed by many departments Little or no coordination of efforts or tools Government is looking for new sources of revenue Crown land only generates $5 M in revenue

Overview of Initiative Components The Provincial Land and Resource Management (PLARM) Initiative includes both policy and technology projects, which are establishing processes and systems to allow the government to more effectively use its land and resources Subprojects include: 1. Land Asset Management (LAM) Policy Pilot 2. Provincial Land Ownership Project 3. Mineral and Petroleum Rights Registry System - NovaROC 4. Land Services System - CrownLINC 5. GIS Link Project

1. LAM Policy Pilot (completed) Conducted extensive consultations with stakeholders from the wind and agriculture industries and promoted Crown land as an available resource indicating that we are open for business Assessed the wind-energy resource on Crown land and developed a series of maps showing the wind-energy conversion potential on Crown land Assessed the maple sugar resource on Crown land Revised the Special Leasing Policy to create a new Crown Land Leasing Policy and Application Guide Issued a Request for Proposal for leasing maple sugar stands on Crown lands Closed project activities in April 2013

GIS Link Project Goals Facilitate sharing and linking of land and resources related data Develop technology tools to support the implementation of an ecosystem based approach to natural resource management and land use planning Working closely with Geographic Information Services at SNSMR Corporate GIS Office Corporate Geospatial Infrastructure (CGI) is the common GIS platform for government Preparing for migration of DNR data to the CGI Project planning & initiation activities are underway
