In my opinion, Madeira really is Portugal s hidden gem! When greeted by the vibrant scenery, spectacular mountains and beautifully kept gardens, it really is obvious why this island is so popular with all ages. I stayed in the Lido area of Funchal, which is fairly quiet but has a great selection of restaurants. The walk into Funchal centre only takes about twenty minutes and during your leisurely stroll make sure you stop of in one of the little coffee shops to try one of the delicious cakes or pastries on offer. If you want nightlife, then there are bars and nightclubs dotted around the centre of Funchal. The Old Town area is also a must, wander the cobbled streets in the early evening while trying to decide which restaurant to dine in the cuisine is fantastic with a great selection of fresh fish, try the local Scabbard, and many different Madeira wines. Highly recommended is the poncha, it is a local alcoholic beverage and is served very differently all over the island, very good but also very strong. Getting out and about to explore the island is essential, whether this be taking the Cable Car ride from Funchal up to Monte and then whizzing back down in a famous toboggan, or taking part in one of the many island tours to see the breathtaking scenery for yourself, taking a boat tour from the marina to search for dolphins and whales in the wild, or take the ferry to the smaller island of Porto Santo to spend the day lazing around on the golden beach - there is so much to do in Madeira that the problem will be fitting it all in. I travelled to Madeira with the view that there wasn t a lot to do and it was the sort of destination that my Grandma would enjoy, however I was very mistaken and I can t wait to re-visit and do all the things that I didn t have time to do on my first visit.
