The colony of over 600 skimmers make scrapes in the sand to lay eggs and raise their chicks. As more chicks hatch and grow older, they will begin venturing outside of the colony s posted area looking for shade or to cool off by the water. They will be at an increased risk since they blend in so well with the sand. Skimmer parents are great at defending their eggs and chicks against predators such as gulls and crows, but they need a little extra help from you to make sure they successfully raise their families. Tips for Helping the Black Skimmers: Keep your distance and respect posted areas. If the birds become agitated, you are too close! Take a few steps back until the bird has settled down. Signs and rope help people to avoid stepping on nests/chicks. Avoid flushing birds. Large flocks of Black Skimmers from the colony sit by the water s edge to cool off, sometimes with their chicks. Running through flocks cause them to fly away and use up their energy needed to feed and protect chicks. Chicks unable to fly will also be left alone and vulnerable to predators. Avoid lighting off fireworks within 1,000 ft of the colony. Firework booms can flush skimmers off their nests and cause abandonment of chicks. Keep pets off the beach and away from nesting areas. Avoid feeding wildlife, especially the gulls and crows. Attracting these predators to the beach and near the colony puts the nests and chicks at risk. Spread the word! Tell others what you ve learned about these incredible birds! Audubon Florida is looking for volunteers to steward these colonies of nesting Black Skimmers and help educate the public during the weekends and 4 th of July holiday. If you are interested in becoming a bird steward or learning more about how you can help, please email anchor steward Monica Craig at mcraig@audubon.org or visit www.flbeachbirds.org. Commission meetings replay on Ch. 642 on a continuous loop

City of St. Pete Beach Fire Rescue 7301 Gulf Blvd St. Pete Beach, FL, 33706 727.363.9206 PRESS RELEASE TO: Media Contacts FROM: Jim Kilpatrick, Fire Chief DATE: June 28, 2017 RE: St. Pete Beach Fire Rescue Gets New Medic 22 St. Pete Beach Receives New Medic Unit 22 St. Pete Beach, Florida St. Pete Beach residents and visitors can feel safer this summer. St. Pete Beach Fire Rescue received their new medic unit and placed in full service on June 21, 2017. This unit will be located at the St. Pete Beach Fire Station 22, 1950 Pass A Grille Way. Medic 22 will primarily provide advance life support medical care to residents and visitors of St. Pete Beach and the surrounding communities. New Medic 22 is a 2017 Ford F550 4X4 and will replace a 2001 Freightliner model. Medic 22 will be the newest addition to the fire department s fleet. Medic 22 has a custom built rescue body, built by Hall-mark RTC, based in Ocala Florida. In addition to its primary function, the unit is equipped with water rescue equipment including marine radios, search lights, dual swim boards and Water Extrication Team (WET) equipment. The WET Team is a rapidly deployed team of two to four divers using rapid extrication SCUBA equipment. The goal of this specialty equipment is to allow rescuers to don their gear in rapid fashion and enter the water to rescue victims from sub-surface marine environments. We are proud of the level of service that our fire fighters-paramedics provide and the new medic unit facilitates that service. For additional information related to this story, please contact Jim Kilpatrick, Fire Chief at (727) 363-9206 or firechief@stpetebeach.org. ####
