In 1847, when the United States invaded Mexico, Queretaro was made the capital of the nation; and it also hosted the drafting and promulgation of the Mexican Constitution, in 1917. Attractions Historic Center Characteristics: Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996, the Historic Center of Queretaro boasts splendid civil and religious buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries, including the Former St. Francis Convent, now a Regional Museum; the Casa de la Marquesa, a mansion converted into a luxury hotel; the Theater of the Republic, place of the enactment of 1917 Constitution, and the former Convent of San Agustín, now the Museum of Art. Also the aqueduct, built in the 18th century, is considered among the most important structures of its kind in Mexico, notable for its architectural design. Surroundings Bernal and Tequisquiapan Bernal, designated a Magical Town, is a picturesque destination famous for its impressive crag, 350 meters (382.9 yards) tall, the third largest monolith in the world. Is located at 92 km (57 mi) from the City of Queretaro. Don Bartolo s house Tequisquiapan, 58 km (36 mi) distant from the city of Queretaro, is a beautiful provincial town that has kept its colonial character, with old stone-paved roads and a number of hot springs that have made the town into an important tourist destination. Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve Characteristics: This is a key area for biodiversity in central Mexico. Within its limits is one of the largest forested areas in the country, stre- tching over 383,567 hectares (1,481 square miles), just over 30 percent of the total territory of Queretaro. The importance of this reserve lies in the fact that it is home to over 200 animal species and 1,800 types of flora. The reserve also features a great many caves and caverns, and the archaeological site Valle Verde. Location: Northern part of the state. 136
