EUSKADI A SMALL COUNTRY WITH A GREAT IDENTITY Euskadi (the Basque Country) is a complete tourist destination the whole year round thanks to its privileged location in the south of Europe, in the green north of Spain and bordering France; then it is small, and everything is at hand. The three Basque capital cities are a good example of this identity: Bilbao, more than just the Guggenheim but a cultured, stimulating town that competes with the greatest European cities in terms of quality and modernity. Donostia-San Sebastián, more than just a beautiful bay but a cosmopolitan city with a delightful life style next to the sea. Vitoria-Gasteiz, more than just a cathedral and historic centre, but a city with a rich heritage and a pleasant, well-planned urban design.

BILBAO A RE-INVENTED TOWN FOR THE FUTURE The River of Bilbao, the backbone of the town: from the Old Quarter to the Biscay Bridge. It is also a town surrounded by low-lying mountains like Artxanda, but at the same time, it has infrastructures like the Cruise Port and the main airport in both Euskadi and the north of Spain. Internationally renowned for its urban transformation. Bilbao received the city Nobel Lee Kuan Yew World City Prize in 2010. Bilbao is the capital city of Biscay as well as a metropolis, and the economic and financial centre of Euskadi. It is the largest urban area in Euskadi (1,000,000 inhabitants) and a university town.

BILBAO A RE-INVENTED TOWN FOR THE FUTURE Bilbao, the capital of Biscay, is a city that has been re-invented where the past and the future, tradition and innovation coexist to create a harmonious landscape that is reflected in its parks and gardens, promenades, streets and buildings. The Seven Streets of the Old Quarter, bustling with life and trade; the XIX Century Ensanche (or expansion ) with its neo-classic and Baroque landscape; the rehabilitated area of Abandoibarra and its contemporary architecture. The magic of each corner of the town leaves no visitor indifferent.

BILBAO A RE-INVENTED TOWN FOR THE FUTURE CASCO VIEJO (The Old Quarter) A stroll through its lively, bustling streets is where to find the most typical Bilbao, unchanged for years and years. The Seven Streets with San Antón s Church were the beginnings of the town, 700 long years ago: here you can still feel the charm and the essence of bygone times. The Plaza Nueva and its arcades, the fresh produce Ribera Market, the majestic Arriaga Theatre or St James Cathedral are some of the favourite places of Bilbao s inhabitants. ENSANCHE (The Expansion ) As its very name indicates, the Ensanche was built on the other bank of the river to the Old Quarter as the town s expansion area. Here, in the XIX Century, the modern Bilbao was created with its wide streets, spacious squares and beautiful gardens. In this area, the Gran Vía of Bilbao can be found the town s financial and business centre. ABANDOIBARRA Abandoibarra is the most representative example of Bilbao s impressive transformation from an industrial to a services and tourist town. The regenerated bank of the Nervión River offers visitors a cosmopolitan landscape comprising, among others, impressive contemporary architecture such as the Guggenheim Museum, the Euskalduna Palace (Congress and Music Centre) and the infinitely tall Iberdrola Tower.

BILBAO A RE-INVENTED TOWN FOR THE FUTURE GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM BILBAO This contemporary art museum marked the before and after of the town s regeneration. Its spectacular, symbolic vanguard building, designed by Frank Gehry, is a great work of art in itself and has been denominated the first great building of the XXI century.

BILBAO A RE-INVENTED TOWN FOR THE FUTURE FINE ARTS MUSEUM This museum, considered one of the best in Europe with over ten thousand pieces of art, is characterised for the ample chronology of its works, its great variety of schools and artistic manifestations. Other Museums: Basque Museum, Maritime Museum Archaeological Museum, Museum of Reproductions, the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art, the Bilbao Athletic FC Museum and the Museum for the Holy Week Procession floats. SHOPPING Shopping in Bilbao is a real pleasure: there is something for everyone. Those looking for small traditional shops, or shops offering something different and varied, souvenir shops, shops selling complements or antiques will find it all in the Casco Viejo where there are over 800 establishments spread around its singular streets. Then again, those seeking the great international firms and large stores just have to take a pleasant stroll through the Ensanche. GASTRONOMY Sitting around a table in renowned Michelin stars restaurants, exquisite traditional restaurants, typical grill houses, cider bars or eating tapas (we call them pintxos in the Basque Country): the visitor in Bilbao can taste and enjoy the internationally famous Basque cuisine.

GETXO JUST A STEP DOWN THE GANGWAY Getxo, just 12 km (8.5 miles) from Bilbao houses the Port of Bilbao Cruise Terminal. This coastal town is one of the most important residential areas in the whole Basque Country and offers a wide range of tourist, shopping and gastronomic facilities. THE OLD PORT: This fishing quarter overlooking Ereaga Beach still maintains the authenticity and charm of its fisherman s past with its colourful houses and narrow, sloped streets. Nowadays, it is a place with a fine atmosphere, somewhere to relax with a good glass of wine and a pintxo. BISCAY BRIDGE: Better known as the Hanging Bridge, this original transporter bridge connects the area of Las Arenas (Getxo) with the town of Portugalete and was declared Common Heritage of Mankind by UNESCO in 2006. PROMENADE OF THE GREAT HOUSES OF GETXO: A stroll from Biscay Bridge to the Old Port, will allow you to enjoy the great architectural beauty of the area. All along the Muelle de las Arenas Promenade, can be seen great mansions built in Getxo s golden age in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

BISCAY HAS MUCH TO OFFER COAST OF BISCAY Bermeo, Mundaka, Lekeitio or Elantxobe, just to mention a few examples, are villages with a great fishing tradition that offer visitors the chance to enjoy their idyllic beaches, practise surfing or even to taste their delicious fresh fish accompanied by the exquisite local white wine, known as txakoli. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, a shrine situated on top of a rock in the middle of the sea, offers impressive views to those prepared to climb the 241 steps up the long stairway. VILLAGES IN THE INTERIOR The interior has many medieval villages - Gernika, Durango, Balmaseda, Elorrio, Otxandio, Areatza: places rich heritages: churches, shrines, stately homes and mansions. BISCAY NATURE Biscay offers the hiker an endless number of scenic routes, old disused railway tracks now converted into walking or bicycle routes. Some examples are the Vía Verde (Green Way) de Arrazola (in the Atxondo Valley) and the Vía Verde de Atxuri (in Mungia). ST JAMES WAY One of the routes on St James Way crosses Biscay the Camino del Norte. This route borders the whole of the Bay of Biscay until it reaches Santiago de Compostela.
