PUBLICATION OF A CONCISE GAZETTEER OF GREECE Prepared by: A. Pallikaris (HNHS) G. Makridis (HMGS) I. Papaioannou (HNHS) The United Nations recommended for international use a concise version of national gazetteers (2 d UN Conference on the Standardization of Geographical Names, London 1972). For the geographical names of Greece the Hellenic Military Geographical Service (HMGS) had published in 1997 the National Gazetteer of Greece. This is a detailed gazetteer containing about 90,000 geographical names as they were depicted on the official land maps at 1:50,000 scale. The gazetteer has been published in printed as well as in digital form. The Romano-Hellenic Division during a meeting at the 7* UNCGN (N.York 1998) recommended to the member countries the preparation and publication of a concise catalogue of geographical names based on 1: 1 M scale mapping. Pursuant to this recommendation, a concise catalogue of geographical names has been prepared and completed in 1999. This catalogue contains about 2,500 geographical names. For each geographical name there are the following entries: l Original Greek name (in Greek alphabet) l Romanized Greek name (according to ELOT 743 conversion system) l Geographical coordinates (longitude - latitude) on WGS 84 For the convenience of the user, this concise catalogue consists of two parts (Patt I and Part II) in which geographical names are listed alphabetically according to their Greek and Romanized version respectively. An extract of this catalogue is attached to this paper and a limited number of copies of the whole publication are displayed on the desk of the room. The next step after the publication of the above mentioned catalogue, is to add two more entries for each name, in order to give it the form of a gazetteer according to UNCGN resolution I/4(E). These entries are: l The kind of feature to which the name applies l Cross-references to names previously used for the same feature. -l-
