From its fantastic and renowned live music scene to its many museums, there is never a dull moment in this city. Explore the extensive art collections of wealthy industrialist Sir William Burrell at the Burrell Collection including 13 th to 16 th century tapestries, amongst many other collections. Do you fancy traditional Scottish games? Grab your kilt and get ready for the sound of bagpipes as you immerse yourself in Scottish history with a visit to the Highland Games. Day 1: Saturday, July 05 GRE 301-101 ECOADVENTURE CAMPING WEEKEND 3 Days/ 2 Nights This tour is a unique opportunity to experience ECO Camping in Scotland s highlands. From Glasgow you will head to Ben A nn known as the heart of the Trossachs. Climb to the top of the summit and enjoy astounding views of Loch Katrine, Loch Achray and Loch Venacher as well as the nearest adjacent hill of Ben Venue. Scotland is extremely lucky to have a massive diversity of landscapes and this hike provides more quality views per mile than many much longer, more demanding walks. On arrival at the campsite take in the scenery and make yourselves at home by setting up camp and cooking yourselves a well-deserved hot, heartwarming dinner. In the evening enjoy fun challenges, and laughter around the campfire. Rise and shine the next morning to make breakfast and prepare your packed lunch for the day. Be sure to bring lots of energy and enthusiasm but also be prepared to get dirty or wet as you enter the world of the gorge. Combine waterfalls, mudslides, tree trunks and deep pools and be taken on a journey you will not forget. Scramble through an age-old sandstone gorge, Jump into the water and then bob, dive, float, swim and scramble through a series of plunge pools until the ultimate BIG JUMP at the end. Return to the campsite for dinner and finish off the evening by joining in some traditional Scottish Dancing. GRE 102-201 LUSS HIGHLAND GAMES Full Day Enjoy a fantastic day engaging in Scotland s sporting traditions and immersing yourself in Gaelic culture. The Luss Highland Games are the oldest in Loch Lomond. The first games were held in 1875 and have been held annually ever since, except for a break during the two world wars. Upon arrival in Luss, you will have some free time to explore this pretty quaint village, with its prim sandstone and slate cottages garlanded in rambling roses. Next, you will follow the Pipe band, Clan Colquhoun, and chieftain as they march MINIMUM REGISTRATION: 30 proudly in their traditional family kilts to the games. Enter the highland games and spend the next few hours watching some of the most unusual sports native to Scotland, such as Tossing the Caber, where a huge piece of timber is thrown up into the air and participants are judged by balance and grace. Witness the tug of war, cycle race, Scottish dancing, Scottish Backhold Wrestling, Scottish Strongman Competition, and much more. Most sports at the games are closed to the professionals, however, there are a few games in which guests can join in, such as the Kilted Dash and the Visitors Race. Guests must wear a kilt in order to enter the kilted dash, so for those that have Scottish roots, now is the time to darn the family kilt and make a run for the winning position! The Cathedral has been in constant use for worship for over 800 years, and is of great architectural and historic interest. Opposite the Cathedral, you will see Provand s Lordship, the oldest house in Glasgow, built in 1471. The house was originally part of a hospital and is one of only four surviving medieval buildings in the city. Its galleries are full of displays, artifacts, and stunning works of art, which explore the importance of religion in peoples lives across the world and across time. The Burrell Collection is a treasure trove of more than 8,000 items ranging from ancient civilization to the Impressionist period. The wide-ranging collection of objects d'art, forming the Burrell Collection, was bequeathed to the city by millionaire shipping magnate, Sir William Burrell, in 1944. The palace was the home of Mary Queen of Scots from 1561 to 1568, Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745, and is now the Queen s official residence in Scotland. Drive up to Arthur s Seat for some spectacular views over the city and local area, before heading to the Castle. GRE 103-201 CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH S GLASCOW Full Day Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928) made his mark on three types of architecture public buildings, private houses and tea-rooms and created an entirely original blend of Art Nouveau design. World renowned for his innovative and influential style, many of his buildings can be enjoyed throughout his home town of Glasgow. First you will head to the center of Glasgow to visit Mackintosh s greatest architectural achievement, the Glasgow School of Art. This fascinating building remains a working school of art today. One of the curators will give you a private and exclusive tour of the building and its history including rooms that are otherwise closed to the public! Day 3: Monday, July 07 GRE 106-301 ROBERT BURNS LIFE & S Half Day Depart Greenock and head south to Ayrshire through the landscape that inspired Scotland s national bard. Alloway is the birthplace of worldrenowned poet Robert Burns and today you will see plentiful reminders of the man and his world. Upon arrival at the Burns National Heritage Park your guide will provide an introduction to the park. You will then be free to explore the park at leisure and your guide will be on hand to answer any questions. Burns National Heritage Park provides the opportunity to experience the rich heritage of Burns within the environment that inspired him. The little cottage where Burns was born has been fully restored and shows what life was like throughout his childhood. The museum houses not only an original manuscript of the famous song Auld Lang Syne but also the world s most important collection of manuscripts, artifacts and memorabilia. Poems are played every hour in the museum on big screens as a fabulous backdrop to this interactive wonderland. Wander around the remainder of the park at leisure and see the Auld Kirk Alloway where Burns father is buried and Brig O Doon, the setting for the climax of the tale Tam O Shanter. You can also spend time at Statue House where you can see statues of Robert Burns cronies created by the self taught sculptor James Thom. There are great views of Ben Lomond to the right and the peaks of the Arrochar Alps in the distance. The walk finishes at Rowardennan where you will re-join your coach for the return journey to the ship.
