Stockholm The Capital of Scandinavia Welcome to Stockholm and one of the world s most beautiful capitals. Built on 14 islands around one of Europe s largest and best-preserved mediaeval city centres, the Swedish capital is superbly positioned, with stunning and extremely varied scenery in every direction. Stockholm offers a wealth of museums, theatres, sights, attractions and events, whether your interest lies in history, art, opera, modern dance, traditional handicraft, contemporary design or virtually anything else. There are many reasons why Stockholm is the natural Capital of Scandinavia. One is that Stockholm is positioned at the heart of the region, and enjoys the benefits of a world-class transport infrastructure. Another is that Stockholm is the largest city in the largest country in Scandinavia. It is also where you find the most multinational companies, the largest stock market and, not least, the most visitors. People come to Stockholm for the food, the design and the music. Stockholm also offers a unique range of galleries and museums, and every year the eyes of the world are on Stockholm when the Nobel Prizes are awarded. Welcome to Stockholm The Capital of Scandinavia. Travel to Stockholm Stockholm has direct air links with a large number of cities around the world. Stockholm Arlanda Airport, is served by 70 international airlines, offering some 500 international direct flights. It is an increasingly important arrival and departure point for 137 international destinations. Travel within Stockholm Public transport is fairly well developed, buses, commuter trains and the underground will take you just about anywhere. Stockholm is relatively easy to get around compared to many big cities
Stockholm s climate The climate in Stockholm is extremely varied and every season has its particular charm. At the beginning of April, spring begins to make a long-awaited entrance and a month later, both the birches and the city s many outdoor cafés begin to blossom. Stockholm s parks fill with both Stockholmers and tourists. Summer comes some time in June, and by Midsummer s Eve, it should definitely have arrived. During the summer months, July and August, the water in Stockholm stays at an invitingly warm temperature, making it perfect for bathing. In September, summer turns into fall as the leaves change from green to red. On the longest day of the year (June 21), the sun goes up at 3:31 AM and sets at 10:08 PM. It is never completely dark between the middle of June and the middle of July. On the shortest day of the year, December 22, the sun doesn t rise until 8:44 AM and disappears from the horizon at 2:49 PM. The highest temperature ever recorded in Stockholm was +38 C; the lowest was -32 C. Stockholm is Never Boring A jazz festival on the water s banks, guard-mounting parade in front of the Royal Castle, a gingerbread house competition... there s something going on in Stockholm every single day of the year.
