Excursions Descriptions CULTURAL TOURS MUSCAT CITY TOUR (MORNING) The first stop on the Muscat City Tour is the Grand Mosque, the most beautiful architectural piece of work. The Mosque was built over a period of 6 years from 1995 to 2001. The main chandelier is made of pure Swarovski crystal and the carpet adorning the large prayer hall was woven by experts, made out of pure Persian silk. The Mosque exterior is constructed with quality Rajasthani Sandstone and the main halls as well as the smaller prayer rooms are adorned with the finest Italian Marble. The Mosque is surrounded by 5 minarets, each of which symbolizes the holy five vows taken by every devout Muslim to reinforce his faith in the Almighty. Definitely a must see! From the Mosque, proceed through the Embassy road (please note that it is forbidden to take photographs) to the old part of Muscat city: The Muttrah souk a traditional Omani market. The souk offers a wide range of goods, especially typical Omani souvenirs like Frankincense, the Omani Dagger or Khanjar and beautiful silver handicrafts and Pashmina shawls. The guide will escort you on the stroll through the souk and assist wherever needed to obtain the best deal (bargaining is part of the daily trade here!). The next stop is the Bait Al Zubair Museum. The museum is a small town house that has been converted to display the old archeological findings and Omani traditions such as national dress and jewelry. The Museum also has an interesting display of old pictures of Muscat before the renaissance that started with his Majesty the Sultan Qaboos s reign in 1970. From here we shall proceed to see the Sultan s Palace (video filming is prohibited) surrounded by the 2 Forts of Mirani and Jalali built by the Portuguese in the 16th century during their rule of the coastal cities of Oman. Finally return to the Hotel on the Al Bustan Road (named after the famous Al Bustan Palace hotel). MAGICAL MUSCAT (EVENING) First drive to the Grand Mosque for a photo stop. The Mosque is beautiful by night, as it is illuminated from all sides with floor spot lights and the grandeur of its architectural genius truly comes alive! Next drive through the Embassy road, which is likewise a lovely sight with the tress flanking the pavements on both sides and forming dancing shadows on the lovely Embassy buildings built like typical Arabic villas. From here you will drive to the Corniche which fringes the old Muscat town better known as Muttrah. The Corniche is near the main Mina Al Sultan Qaboos port of Oman and the Muttrah souk. A short halt will allow you to visit the souk and stock up on all the typical Oman souvenirs that are sold in almost every shop! At night all the ships in the harbour are also illuminated, especially His Majesty the Sultan s personal yacht. The next stop is the Bait Al Zubair Museum. It is one of the most informative museums in Oman and focuses mainly on the traditional culture and lifestyle of the people of the Sultanate. From here we proceed on to see the Sultan s Palace and the 2 forts Jalali and Mirani which guard it. The forts were built by the Portuguese in the 16th century. On the way back we shall pass through the old city of Muscat. Back to hotel /or dinner as follows (optional) Dinner at a typical Arabic restaurant, situated in the heart of the new Muscat. Dinner will include a set menu consisting of a variety of delectable Arabic specialties that can be chased (optional) by a deliciously flavored hublybubly (water pipe or shisha) to enhance the laid back mood! **MUSEUM AND GRAND MOSQUE CANNOT BE VISITED ON FRIDAYS OR PUBLIC/RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS / GRAND MOSQUE SATTHUR (08hrs 11hrs)** 13
